I gotta disagree fellas. They actually did give the best performances hands down. Monique will get best supporting actress for sure and the precious chick will enjoy a much deserved nomination. Have either of you seen the movie? There was nothing sexy or glamorous about their roles. I agree that Hollywood to this day still type casts black people especially black women. They are rarely seen as love interests or even the leading lady unless it's an all black cast and even then it's a modern day blaxplotation film. They say the marking of a great performance is when you can forget the actor is an actor and truly see them as the character. They both did this, so with that said this is their moment to shine they earned it.

They both did a really good job, but for some reason, I walked away from that flick like wtf? Something about it I didn't like. I can't pinpoint what it is/was.

No, I haven't seen it and refuse to.

Then how can you talk about the film?

Hmmm, exploitation? Walking stereotypes? Fetishizing of black/ghetto dysfunction? Sympathetic people (Kravitz, Carey) = light skinned, Non-sympathetic (Precious) = dark-skinned? How did that square with your ethos of inclusion? I can see why something bothered you about the flick.

It was a well written drama fam. I never thought of the light skin dark skin parallels which is interesting even though I didn't pay attention to it. I thought the telling of a story that most would rather ignore including people who live like that was amazing. You should check it out because without seeing it you make yourself look like a pontificating know it all Jack ass fam. Seriously take a look.

    LMAO!!!!!!!! NO!

For the people who have seen it, I think it was her daydreaming that got on my nerves and made it seem very unrealistic. I know she was escaping her reality, but that took away from the strength of the movie.

Doesn't that seem like what people would do in that situation. A lot of people said the same thing. How creepy was that scene where she had to earn that fried chicken.

Of course! Hence why I said she has to escape her reality, but for some reason, it made it corny and not as in depth as it could've been without it.

    Yeah, that was awful.

So I guess I knew something about the movie even you didn't notice and you actually saw it. Now who's the jackass. LOL.

Another reason I won't be seeing it. You're making my arguments for me. :D

You made a small observation you probably saw in a trailer and wasn't the theme of the movie. By the way never said you were a Jack ass just said you were sounding like one. Not liking the movie is one but ore judging it before seeing what it's all about sounds like the very thing you're always vocal about karma.... I'm just saying.

Sorry man, that's what trailers and Charlie Rose and articles and interviews are for, to help you make up your mind to see a movie, or in my case, not.

Which is fine but you spoke about the merit of the movie as if you've seen it.

LOL I'm not going back and forth with you. I'll discuss the movie all I want based on what I know of it, and what I know, I don't like. Period.

In defense of Karma, there's always that line from Boondocks:

"I don't have to see a lynching to know it won't be funny"

Meanwhile, Andrae, did you see Antwone Fisher? I haven't seen Precious yet, but I read yesterday someone suggesting that the two movies were very similar, but that Precious was simultaneously not as good and more critically acclaimed.

    What are your thoughts?

I personally liked Precious there was far more depth in the characters and since I worked in social services for a number of years.

Thank you, I was wondering for a minute if I was speaking/writing English.
