We need more Aaron Spellings in Hollywood. He understood that entertainment was about glamor and attractive people and wasn't afraid to admit it. He said often that he likes to hire attractive people. Now, I'm not talking if a woman has meat on her bones or have curves, that's a whole different ballgame.
vanity fair is not commenting on the backlash but other magazines have come to their defense saying that even michelle obama doesn't sell on the magazine rack...two magazines have tried her on the cover and had just so so sales...only oprah has been able to cross over into mainstream magazines sales...does anyone have any idea who buys magazines? white women:smt115
Awe lippy lippy you cant be this niave and lost to where I was going. Irish, Italian, Swedish, German, ect. is all white culture. It is not black folks or even white folks fault that racist at one time symbolized whites in this country and ran it. I dont know if your calling blacks who are very black cultured racist, but I would hope not. And I think you missed the part where I have pointed the diversity in urban entertainment outweighing the diversity in mainstream.
Thats giving them an excuse, they can say that to anything... "Oh too many black people on a show wont do well, Hiring blacks will decrease our sales, No one wants to see black men kissing white women" and so on.
They are doing that, but when it comes to movie and national t.v. Whites own all the distribution rights and all the national broadcasts... smh. We have to do it independently as I have said, but realize we wont have a national audience and whites are standing in front of that that is why it is important to speak out on racism in hollywood. It is the very thing SO MANY are afraid to do.
If bw don't buy the magazine and bw don't interest the ww who do, then why should they put bw on the cover? As a ww, bw don't interest me in the slightest. I can name a couple of bw in film (and only one asian woman, unless we're counting porn), none of which I'm that taken with and none of which I would ever go to see a movie because they were in it (although Halle is damn hot, I'll agree with that). Which leads me to believe that there really probably wasn't anyone "of colour" to add to this particular issues cover image (however, being in Australia I could be unaware of someone who hasn't made it down here yet). Same is actually true for ww actresses. I can name far more of them, but I wouldn't go to a movie (or buy a magazine) based on the fact that they were in it. A cover with a whole bunch of women on it doesn't interest me at all. LOL Unless it's Angelina Jolie, oh yes...I love the gal. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say, I think I wandered far from my point a decade ago. Feels good to hear my own voice....errrr...fingers type, though.
[oversensitive egg-head dweebs voice]How dare you!!!!??? How dare you say that about these Nubian Queens!????? I am shocked![/oversensitive egg-head dweebs voice]
What you started off with was why put someone on the cover of a magazine if that person doesn't appeal to your target demographic Sin Mari, and that's really what it's all about, just like Lipstick said. Anyone selling anything will do their best to target the people most likely to purchase their product. And there are all these studies on what appeals to women. I had to locate a spokesperson for a client's video last year and they gave me all this target demographic BS criteria to look through and frankly I think most of it is complete crap, at least it would be to me. According to the studies the average American woman between the ages of 25 and 50 will: - be more likely to purchase a magazine if the woman on the cover has breasts that are at least a C cup, and D is preferable - be less persuaded by a blond or redhead than a brunette - be less persuaded by a male than a female - lend less credibility to a woman who is overweight than to one who is slim So the ideal person to market to a woman is a slim, brunette woman with big boobs. Like I said I think it's crap and I really don't know where people get research like this from. But the advertisers pay attention to it like it was chiseled in stone from on High. The one that I really don't get is the big boobs. Why the hell would that matter to a woman? If I want to see big boobs, I'll look in the mirror, I don't need a magazine cover for that. It baffles me, and part of me thinks some smart, rich bastard is making this crap up and has the marketing field eating out of his/her hand.
Well, those rich bastards must be right about something because they made themselves rich bastards doing it. LOL Maybe the boobs thing has to do with maturity? Small boobs remind us of young women and those of us in our twenties, thirties and up don't really want to take advice from someone who appears to be pre-pubity. I don't know, just a guess. It would be interesting to do a marketing course to find out how it all works. I don't have a problem with what people choose to put on their magazines. I don't buy any magazines except for a dog one. Hahahaha! Yes, I'm a mad obsessed dog person hiding amongst you.
Co-sign!! Also, its not even about just black women, there are also other women of color like Frita Pinto that could've been on the cover. I don't think anyone is outraged, I just think some folks of all races agree that there could've been at least one or two minorities added to the cover. Because best believe if this issue was the opposite gender, I think many black men would feel slighted as well. I agree 100%!! Not to compare this situation to Obama, but just imagine people telling him, blacks don't vote as much as whites and their only 13% if the population and whites don't vote for black politicians so you shouldn't run for president. You know, its more about breaking down barriers and including others(minorities) instead excluding them.
It's a damn magazine not the March on Washington. Does Essence or Sista2Sista have white women on the cover? You and Inner Beauty need to choose your battles.
It's not about BW, it's about Whites being the majority and everything being White. I think things should be more diverse. I choose my battles very wisely, but I'm also about fairness, equality and diversity. I partake in discussions I believe in.
