http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beau...pletely-lacks-diversity-578862/?pg=2#comments Magazine issues like these, are a prime reason why Afro-centric publications like Jet and Ebony continue to exist.
i know, im baiting but, i bet if this involved black men being left out in the dark, ya'll be up in arms
More political correctness. I don't know about you, but I don't want Precious' fat ass staring at me when I open my mailbox
You said what I decided not to... The powers that be don't consider her appropriate for this type of magazine.
fuck vanity fair. And fuck a whitewashed entertainment industry that would allow such a boringly homogeneous group to represent "New Hollywood". Looks exactly like old hollywood: dated. And fuck the embarasssingly racist white posters on that blog, too.
Were you expecting something different from them? Certain magazines have a certain demographic. As screwed up as it is, this one doesn't include people of color.
That demographic pisses me off, lol. If new hollywood has no room for Asian Women, Middle Eastern Women, Black Women, Hispanic Women, Indian Women, Biracial Women, then how utterly boring will the next crop of movies be? Diversity is always an improvement. Vanity Fair can say there just aren't any faces of color in movies today to choose from, and Hollywood can site Vanity Fair to say that people are just responding to white faces more. Round and round it goes, and meanwhile entertainment just gets more lame as a result.
Thats why it is up to black folks to do they own thing, we have to break down the barriers, walls and make our own mark. In mainstream hollywood they dont care and if they do want somebody of color to succeed it is always the black guy that doesnt touch white women and the black, latina, asian, indian girl that doesnt touch black men. Mainstream Hollywood is white man's world but like I have stated before racism as long as blacks are on the same page with it is weak and not that strong, it is only strong when blacks cant agree on whether is something is racist or not or with blacks that are either too stupid when it comes to racism or to scared.
vanity fair does not have a black demographic for the most part...but at least the cover title doesn't say caucasions only...i would never buy or subscribe to ebony magazine for myself...it would appear there is a bit of a double standard where blacks are concerned...if anything blacks segregate themselves out and do their own thing excluding whites... this cover is about young hollywood...if if was about the young female music artists of today it would be much more diverse...perhaps if we looked at the statistics we would see that the ratio of young bw in hollywood pales in comparison to young ww...one more point, if this was an all male layout we would see lots of different shades in skin colour so maybe this isn't a blk/wht thing but a male/female
Of course they're not going to put "Whites only". That would be racist, but that doesn't necessarily mean there aren't racist undertones like it's been displayed here. There's a double standard because of inequality. If there weren't any inequities, like POJ said, there wouldn't be a need for Ebony and Jet etc. Black folks are forced to start their own things cause they AREN'T included. Young Hollywood does include people of color. Take Zoe Saldana. Although, she's been in the game for a while, she's really on the come up now. They could've included her or Freida Pinto or someone else who's hot right now besides all these White girls. I think it doesn't paint a broad perspective of Hollywood, it only covers "White" (majority) Hollywood. Just cause the ratio isn't equal in numbers isn't fair to say, cause Black people make up like 13% (not sure of the exact percentage) of America.
She is one who I think is glaringly absent. So even if they excluded Precious because she doesn't fit their idea of beauty/thiness there are others who seem to be missing. I don't think they chose on talent alone this year. Some previous years "New Hollywood" pics from their mag:
Well I wouldnt say double standard because the top reason of ebony magazine and others alike is all apart of black culture and black pride. And that goes the same for other ethnic groups. Hollywood made the decision to try and represent america as not being very diverse, black sitcoms has featured more IR coupling than white, black shows like The Wire and NY Undercover if you remember that was more diverse than any other dramas on t.v. but was recognized more by the NACCP IMAGE awards than the Emmys. The Image awards is a celebration of achievements by people of color, The Emmys is suppose to be for everybody, diverse but it's not. So there really isnt a double standard, but more of black culture that is diverse. I dont know where you would get it that it would be a male/female thing I have seen where they have spotlighted young males of hollywood and pretty much the same outcome. I get what you mean with the the music industry but understand blacks in the music industry are more outspoken and can reach folks with their voice so it has been a place where blacks put up a stronger fight to racism, not saying blacks in hollywood dont, but blacks dominate the music industry because they are independent and musical artist have all the weapons (studios, albums, lyrics, ect.) to display and really put something powerful out there... they have a voice and independence so the success in the music industry is more easy to attain than in hollywood.
The difference between past issues and today is there's a black president now, there shouldn't be such pressure to be "diverse" since the top guy in the free world is now a brother and politically correct multiculturalism is sweeping the land. We love white women on this board, I'm struggling to see the issue with this cover. Can't wait for my copy to arrive in the mail
Thank you JC! I totally agree. Well, I know Gabby doesn't fit the mold per se, but she was on the cover recently and she's hot right now cause of her Oscar nom etc. I think she should've been included too, but that's just me.
