.......because having a movie with the wonderful title of, 'The Book of Muhammed,' would be controversial

Well, Mila Kunis's character is sent to seduce Denzel, but apparently, Denzel wanted none of that. Typical Denzel, and very lame. Yeah, I'll probably still watch it, but I am tired of seeing black male and white female leads never getting together (unless the film's plot is based upon IR, such as STLD).

I feel ya on that especially where "D" is concerned but have heart because methinks that Bro Denzel will do something romantic again & maybe even a romcom with a white female lead ala Julia Roberts. Because remember back in the day after Virtuosity with Russell Crowe he also said he wouldn't do action again either & now look at him...

In the past he's stayed away from onscreen IR (sort of) out of respect for black women...HIS WORDS.

Now wait just a minute. Did not brother Denzel get some IR punjab in a movie about him being released from prison. I cannot remember the name of that movie.

You had mentioned "He Got Game" directed by Spike Lee. It is decent. Remember the movie "Ricochet" when after John Litgow's character drugged him and sent a prostitute to have "sex" with him as Litgow filmed?

he had a relationship with Milla Johovich before

    :)

he was a dirtbag, crackhead ex-con of a father, but he still crossed over

and don't forget King and Country, a lesser known Denzel movie most people probably never seen

Are you talking about "Queen and Country" because that's the only thing I could find on his imdb list.

Have heart? Noble, c'mon. Stop that fantasy stuff.

Look its not the end of the world if Denzel doesn't ever do any serious IR stuff or anything like that. Still lets not get delusional and think this man is ever going to change his routine. He's not. His next flick is ANOTHER film directed by Tony Scott. Same ol' thing with Denzel.

Anyway Denzel has talked to the media lot recent about how he will be moving away from starring in films and devote more of his time to directing and working on stage. Part of it came across as a bit of self-pity as he mentioned dhow the work he was getting/doing was generic. Wow. You think so, D? What clued you in?

If Denzel is getting generic scripts 50% of the blame lies at the feet of Hollywood which saves its best and most unique scripts for white males. The other 50% of the blame is on Denzel who has been one of the few black actors in history to have lots of control over his career and his options. But Denzel wanted to play it safe for years. I've gone over this before. He was always uncomfortable of being a sex symbol onscreen (maybe he felt he was going to pull a Tiger with his leading ladies). That meant he was uncomfortable of even being in an onscreen romance with black females. When it came to white women though he was downright petrified. It wasn't until "He Got Game" that he decided to loosen up and play a less than noble character and to his credit that would lead to him doing things like Training Day. But he has squandered so much of his potential. Here's how:

1)For too long he was playing primarily nobel characters. More complex roles like the one in "Philadelphia" would have been nice.

2)Allowed himself to be sexually neutered on the screen because he did not like love scenes.

3)Was too cowardly to "offend" black women and white men for the longest time by hooking up with a white female on screen (even though that could have possibly expanded his fan base).

4)Just because he didn't get the A scripts did not mean he should have settled for all the B-scripts that came his way regarding cops, military men, etc. He should have had his agent fight more for the top tier scripts and fired him if he couldn't produce (of course such scripts usually involve an onscreen romance and well...never mind). And he should have taken more chances by seeking out independent films. It would have been the perfect tradeoff: the independent films would have given him better scripts and in turn Denzel's clout would have helped those movies get financing.

5)Got too caught up in being comfortable with the directors he worked with which led him to have repeated collaborations with Tony Scott and Spike Lee. Both of those guys are good directors, not great directors.

So Denzel's screen career may be winding down and I'm fine with that. Sure it means one less black men to be given the chance to star in major motion pictures but I don't find myself excited about Denzel's upcoming works or options anymore. I aprreciate the ten good to very good/great movies he made and he is a fantastic actor. But he is well beyond his peak. Unfortunately there will be a void for leading black man status however this is a problem that one could see coming for awhile. Hollywood doesn't care about making leading black men. If one or two pop up every couple of decades by accident so be it but its not something the industry intentionally creates.

At least Denzel in recent interviews has admitted to making a mistake with turning down "Seven" and "Michael Clayton". He felt "seven" was too dark and as for "Michael Clayton" he didn't like the idea that the writer was going to make his directorial debut when filming the movie. Surely D must ahve read the script to "Michael Clayton" and realized it was one of the best he had ever been given. But, no, he was too worried about being comfortable with the director.Typical.

Mississippi Massalla? If I remember correctly it was where he was dating a daughter of an Indian or Pakistani parents who were kicked out of Uganda by Idi Amin. The parents opposed the relationship because he was black. That movie actually may have been loosely based on true story.

I just saw Book of Eli good movie, but the ending was kind of anticlimactic and unintentionally funny.
