lippy will take a stab at this one...how about we start with:

older than her prospective mate and/or dating pool

i hesitate to put specific ages because i think this category is going to grow over the years

.02 from everyone until we hit a dollar and we should have a great description

Relatively attractive and has a body that is toned.

Her clothing is typically up-to-date fashion and she wears things that would be considered "sexy" instead of "grandmother".

She doesn't look like someone's grandmother, rather she looks like a MILF.

See I think a cougar seeks to date a younger man. What if the woman in question begins dating a younger man without knowing he is that much younger. Is she a cougar, since she was never on the prowl?

    No.

Cougars like (and/or) prefer younger men.

I disagree. Even the "old granny" type can be a cougar. All that is required is that you date younger men and there is someone for everyone. Even those who are traditionally unattractive still have men (or women) wanting to date them.

In general I think people tend to use the label cougar for any woman who is over 35 and with a man 10 or more years younger than herself, whether she was prowling for him or not. I actually object to the term as it's not universally applied to both genders. You don't see people going about calling Hugh Hefner a jaguar with too much Viagra and no self-control.

Kay, time to fess up. My new boyfriend is 29. I did not know it until I caught feelings. I am 43, but we are happy. I normally date younger men (3 to 5 years), but not 14. However we have a great deal in common and like the same stuff. At first it was weird as he is only 7 years older than my oldest kid, but what the hell? I was NOT seeking him or anyone else, it just happened that we met and clicked.

I am sort of relectant to tell my friends his age, He is meeting my kids this weekend,

    If you're over 60, you're not a cougar anymore.

I've been called a cougar, but I haven't dated under 8 years. I usually date nothing younger than 5. Recently I decided I might be able to lower it to 10.

My friend said that I'm not a cougar, cause the guys are basically in the same age range as me.

I'd say to even fit into the Cougar range you'd have to be dating around 15 years junior, 10 years just does not seem enough to warrant the honourary badge IMO.

    So if he's 25 and you're 40 yep if he's 30 and you're 40 then nah. :)

    *shrug*
I still say, if they're dating younger men (much younger) then themselves they're cougars. Doesn't matter if they're old and wrinkly. Just because they don't fit in with your fantasy of what a cougar "should" be, doesn't mean it's not what they are.

If you're going to apply a word to this particular type of dating, you can't exclude based on personal attraction.

Hell, Hugh Hefner is the most disgusting, repulsive, slimy old scrag of a man I've ever seen...but he can and does screw young sluts, so why not the old scraggy women?? Definition of a cougar is a woman who dates much younger men, if those old chicks are doing that...they qualify. Despite the "ick" factor of it all.

    That's a little ageist isn't it? ;-)

Personally, the thought of dating someone more than 10yrs younger than me is gross. I don't like younger men and don't get why anyone uses the word "cougar" at all. Sounds kinda stupid to me.
