Do you think that the western United States is less racist than elsewhere?

Less racial tension for sure since there is not much black history comparing to the southeast, northeast, and midwest. How about racist attitudes, do you think that is less common? Why do you think this is, if so?

    * When I say west, it ranges from Cali to Montana to New Mexico -- anything west of the plains.

(I'm referring to modern times. I know the West had 3 LA riots in the past.)

What about the NE? They seem to be more liberal and accepting. I can't answer definitively.

Don't know. I've never been to the Northeast. I'm basing my opinion on what I've saw off TV. I wouldn't mind going out there though, like NYC.

Hard to say because there really aren't a lot of black people proportionally speaking out west. California is about 10% black I believe and no other state that way comes close. The west may be the most tolerant but it would be easier to differentiate if there were larger numbers of blacks out there. My thinking is that in the NE, their attitudes are the same as the deep South and the Midwest but they are much less inclined to openly display any hostility in the presence of blacks (maybe behind their backs). It's kind of like Western Europe...there tends to be little tension when there aren't too many blacks...and far more tension where there are larger numbers competing directly with whites.

I have traveled all over the US and I don't know if there's a place that's really more racist than another. A lot of you brothas need to travel more.

When looking at the youtube comments and testimony from friends , i will say "yes"" compare to the Europeans countries i visited. But i think south-africa is worst than the
USA , trust me on that.

are we talking west of the mississippi river or the far west? you do realize that there is not a large AA population in the following states: oregon, washington, idaho, montana, wyoming, colorado, new mexico, nevada, utah, north & south dakota, kansas, nebraska and even california...major cities will have the largest concentration of blacks...let's see out of all of these states how many major metropolitan cities there are....hmmmmmmm...denver, portland, seattle, salt lake city, san fran, san diego, sacramento...LA and surrounding cities in the west is the largest population of blacks...

these states may not show or you won't hear about alot of rasism concerning blacks because they put all of their racist efforts towards illegal immigration from mexico and the american indian is also a racist target...periodically you will also hear that jewish people living in these areas are a bone of contention...

I've always heard that California's just watered down South, complete with stories of White people just cutting in front of Black people in line at the grocery store and it being accepted like that's the way it's supposed to be. I realize stories from the grocery store aren't that much of a barometer, but it still shocked me. You wouldn't see that in the Chi.

I think Chicago gets quite the rap for being racist, but it's much more harmonious than a lot of other parts of the country, largely because of the political power held by Black people here -- White people know there's only so much they're gonna get away with. Still, having visited Montreal, I was shocked how much less racist it was than anywhere in the US, including Obama's own uber-harmonious neighborhood of Hyde Park. I'd never seen a place so unracist as Montreal. It was like walking through Heaven.

I've never seen that, what are you talking about???

Having lived in both Northern California, Southern California and being a California Native, I have never, ever seen that.

You have morons cut in line because they are morons, they aren't specifically targeting Black People, that's ridiculous.

Chicago huh? Ah the Daily Political Machine, he could find 55 million to bring the Olympics to Chicago but what about important social programs he couldn't find the budget for?

I'd say Chicago is racist and its overt, you just don't see it.

White People cutting in line on purpose because somebody is Black is one of the funniest things I have read online in a long, long time.

Chicago has a high Black Population because of the Great Migration or have you forgotten that TINY historical fact?

I did not say Chicago was not racist. I have studied the Great Migration extensively. One part of Chicago is so racist that when a young African American kid rode his bike under a viaduct into the neighborhood and was beaten into a coma. Chicago is racist.

I just don't necessarily think it is more racist than certain other parts of the country, especially when I meet people from other parts of the country that say this place is better.

Now, the grocery store story is something I've heard from a few different friends who grew up in California, but if it's an urban legend that I bought, my bad.

Still, I patently don't buy that Chicago's more racist than the South, for instance. Daley Jr's only lost one election for mayor, and it was to Harold Washington. He's never forgotten that Black people in Chicago have become a political force strong enough to take on him.

I think the misunderstanding between us came because I did not explain my somewhat cynical outlook: I think America's pretty racist in general. Chicago's definitely racist. But I don't buy that some of these other places, particularly in states that still fly the confederate flag, are equally or less racist than Chicago.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and Luis Farrakhan live here. That has an impact.

    Wait, what does this mean:

"Chicago has a high Black Population because of the Great Migration or have you forgotten that TINY historical fact?"

What does that even mean? The Great Migration involved a large number of African Americans moving North. Why would they do that if Chicago was as bad as you say? It sounds like you think I've forgotten that racism exists at all. Srsly, what are you getting at?

Those that settled in Chicago encountered racism so bad it led to huge race riots of White People attacking Black People that required the National Guard to end... and STILL they didn't move back South.

Seems to me like Chicago's obviously very racist, and the South's obviously much worse.

Even after the King visit and the Wilson Frost insident in which he was denied being mayor in 1976 after Dailey died,Blacks still have not moved out in droves.

I live in the mid west, South Dakota, and I agree with you about numbers. Generally speaking, blacks are "tolerated" more than the Indians (Native Americans) because we are few in numbers. The Indians have a harder time because they are the largest minority and as a result most of them prefer to stay on their reservations. However, some of them then take it out on the whites who happen to be on the reservations. It`s a vicious cycle.

That is sad O. What's it like living in SD? How do the WW and Native-American women treat brothers?

White Men are largely the problem in this debate it doesn't matter in what State your talking about. They have successfully reduced the Indian population to almost nothing and are quite proud of that fact.

The largely problem is that White Men/People in the here and now will not take ownership of the wrong doings of their great, great, great grandparents, many of them with connection maybe not to Slavery but slaughter of Indians, Redlining of Neighborhoods, saying White Women deserve the right to vote and Social Security before Black People did, etc, etc which all have lasting and enduring impact on Black America.

I would say being a native Californian is that the tolerance level is higher here, but only just. Many Whites here are self-righteous bohemians, quick to call out another racist person but don't hold themselves up to the same standard and you can catch them making thinly veiled racist comments, quips or phrases.

But having said that, unlike most places save for NYC most social events are highly integrated here, IR relationships are highly commonplace, we had a Black Mayor of a major city long before the rest of the country did, even if you could say Tom Brady was an "Uncle Tom" to a degree.

I would much rather be here and not see some of the most vile things than be someplace where quote "Its in your face". Confrontation is not my strong suit and would likely end up with push come to shove, I shove back and much harder and disproportionately more unfair.

I am sure I replied to you but I can`t locate it. Perhaps it was too long. The native women are cool. The ww in the small communities are not so cool. In Rapid City, ww in the 30`s and below are more likely to consider a brother.
