Allen Iverson retired after 14 seasons

    November 25, 2009 09:12 PM EST

Standing just 6 feet tall he's considered one of the greatest little men in the games of basketball ever. Today it was announced that former Sixer, Nugget, Piston and Grizzlies guard, Allen Iverson retired after 15 seasons of NBA basketball. The Big East standout was named MVP one season and participated in the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Although he came up short (no pun intended) against Shaq and Kobe, he made up for it with gritty performances. The guy definitely competed every play down the floor, making some amazing shots while getting banged up beyond belief.

The reported retirement came via a published statement on basketball commentator Stephen A Smith's website. The statement said Iverson plans to retire but also that "I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level." It went on to add that Iverson still has tremendous love for the sport.

The "Allen Iverson retired" news comes early in the NBA season during which Iverson played just 3 games for his latest team, the Memphis Grizzlies. Iverson requested a leave of absence for personal reasons before he and the team came to terms on a mutual waiver. It was said the New York Knicks considered signing the veteran guard, but backed off so they could allow their younger players to get adequate playing time.

He was good while he lasted.

    He had a nice run.

Which brings me to my next point:

    Shaq should consider retiring soon.

Shaq should have quit two years ago. But it's hard for him to walk away from 20M a year...a lot of us would stay.

love AI and all that he brought to the game of basketball...memphis was not a good fit...you don't take a superstar like AI and have him coming off the bench...if the timberwolves had been smart they would have snatched him up...bottomline AI is not ready to retire...if he gets a decent offer his bags will be packed...

I agree that an offer could bring him back...but it would have to be for a contender or a guarantee of starting...and that may not happen.

He's tied for fifth for having highest scoring average all-time. What a scorer !

Nice to see ya around lippy.

Iverson didn't retire. He quit. He'll return the minute his phone rings.

Last year, Dante Culpepper made the same declaration and look where he is now!

I refused to believe that Allen Iverson retires. Just you wait until he returns! I remembered that he said himself that he wants championship ring on his finger, didn't he?

If that so, he shouldn't retired at all.

We all want stuff...doesn't mean we get it.
Pssst, 99.9 % of all professional athletes want a ring...

Agreed. Just because I want Scarlett Johansson or Keira Knightley, does not mean they're going to be under my X-mas tree waiting to be unwrapped. Even MJ, the God of basketball himself did not get lots of things that he wanted. It is called life, get used to it.

that would be great if it happens but i also see him going to a non contending franchise for BIG money just to put fans back in the stands

I heard the rumors that Allen Iverson may not be retired after all. He's thinking about coming back to signing with the Sixers once again. I told you so, guys, it's beyond the impossible for him to be retired too soon!

If he wanna a championship ring on his finger, he better get his ass up to be a man to starting soul-searching to find a winning team that has a higher chance to win the championship this year! My good word! *Face Palm*

If he does re-sign, I will go to a few more games this year. The Sixers are very boring. They may not win, but he will add some excitement.

I hope Allen stays retired. He is one of the reasons why the NBA has gotten unwatchable, and unlikeable.

:sad:you can't be serious...AI may be a bit to manage as far as being an owner or a coach...bottomline, the guy sells tickets to the game, puts fans in the stands...scores...runs up/down the court like the energizer bunny...he is all heart...he takes a beating and keeps on going...pure entertainment...i could give a rats ass if the guy doesn't want to practice...

Shoot for the 6th Man of the Year Award, AI

The problem that AI has always had is, besides the unfortunate 2004 Olympics, he's always been a me-first kind of basketball player. Sure, he's been exciting to watch, he's always played hard, but he has always cared about his stats first, wins second and his team third.

I think he still has a lot of juice in the tank, but he has to accept that he is no longer a starter on any of today's contending teams. He's now a 6th man at best. Take a page out of the Glove's book, AI. Go to a winning team and contribute from the bench. People will have a lot more respect for you.
