I've looked at this one from a lot of different angles; Cotto - against. May be the younger fighter but I feel he's aged a tad, mentally. I think the Clottey/Margarito fights took a piece of his heart. Not sure how big a piece, and I definitely don't think he's a shot fighter, but I feel his best days are now behind him, and don't think he has the tenacity he once did. He's not a particularly adjustable fighter. This should really be his last fight at 145Ibs, I hear he's having difficulty making weight, but we won't know that until weigh-in. Cotto - for. Obviously the much bigger, stronger man, will likely come in around 155 on the night, superb chin, NEVER been seriously hurt in his own division, much less by a lighter guy. Down once, maybe twice? Bounced up like a bloody tennis ball. Beat Mosely who beat De La Hoya. Still only 28, so physically at his peak. Pacquaio - against - Much the lighter man, comparatively untested above 135Ibs, his only heavier fights being against the badly shopworn ODLH and a terribly overrated, stylistically defective Hatton. He may well be overreaching to 145Ibs, having come all the way up from 106 back in the 90'. Despite the fact that he CAN box, tends to get drawn into wars very easily, both Morales (who beat him) and Marquez were able to lure him into slugging matches, and when he DOES, he gives his opponents a lot of openings for counters, drops his left FAR too often when jabbing. I really don't understand why Roach hasn't closed that hole. Pacquaio - for; Possibly the fastest hands on the planet. Frighteningly so. Defensive+offensive skills improved greatly under Roach's tutelage, amazing record in championship fights, and of course unbeaten in nearly 5 years since Morales outpointed him back at 130. My pick - subject to sight of Cotto at weigh-in (stay tuned for the edit update on the 12th!!)... Cotto by very, very thin decision.
Cotto won't be able to rehydrate above 160 like he ALWAYS does. Like Oscar...Cotto will have to fork-over i million for every lb over 147 he gains AFTER the official weigh-in.
Just watch. Cotto doesn't have nearly the pull Oscar had..so if Oscar couldn't rehydrate to 160 on fight night...Cotto sure as hell won't be able to. No way in hell will Freddie Roach let Cotto swell-up after the weigh-in like he usually does. Cotto will look cadaverous in the ring. Shit like this isn't released to the public because it would effect the betting odds and the hurt interest in the fight. DON'T BET ON COTTO.
Pacquaio gonna destroy Cotto, simple as that. I didn't even bother reading all the "weigh in" analysis that people are doing. It don't matter what the weights cause Pacquaio is the fastest fighter Cotto has ever and probably will ever see.
Nothing against Cotto at all, but I'd LOVE to see Pac leave a fully-fed 160Ibs Cotto a bloody, twitching mess on the canvas in Round 3. He's the nearest thing Boxing has to a 'Superman' figure, most fighters are just in it for paydays, there is little honour, plus referees have sucked much of the brutality out of the sport by jumping in too early. Pac MIGHT KO Cotto, except I just don't see it happening. It's likelier, though still unlikely, that Cotto will KO Pac
Pac looks fast fighting old mexicans and Mayweather leftovers. Cotto is washed-up already..that's why Team Pacman is taking this fight. They wanted NO PARTS of Shane Mosley.. Manny is the biggest con-job in boxing...if they put him in the ring with Mayweather you'll see what I mean.
Pac is in it for the payday too. He fought the weakest paper-champ in lightweight history..David Diaz...and a totally weight-drained Dela Hoya. Now he's fighting the weakest link at 147. I'm not impressed.
Do you think that fight could ever be made? Good God man, that will be a nightmare negotiation. It really is the only fight I want to watch, given the awful state of Boxing nowadays, and on that note, I don't think Pac is particularly brilliant in an 'all-times' sense. Duran would have absolutely raped him in a cross-time matchup, as would SLR...don't get me started on what Pep/Saddler would have done to him in the days when Refs actually let fighters hurt each other.
Cotto fought Zab Judah...believe it or not...Zab is faster than Pacman. Manny just looks fast fighting old mexicans and Mayweather leftovers. There is a reason he's fighting Cotto and not Shane Mosley...Cotto was recently KTFO and is on the decline. Cotto is the weakest link at 147. Pac's team LOOKS FOR WEAKNESS in opponents...like David Diaz..the sorriest lightweight paper champ in HISTORY. Hatton was shot to hell and there to be had by anybody. Oscar was dehydrated beyond recognition. That was his first time at Welter in 7 years. Freddie Roach(manny's trainer) admitted the reason he took the Oscar fight was because he noticed Hoya can't pull the trigger anymore. Of course he's gonna look fast fighting somebody that washed-up. In the fight before Manny...Oscar's eyesocket was fractured by the dreaded Stevie Forbes.......a soft-punching Jr Lightweight. Cotto is the only guy at 147 Pac has a chance against...because he's damaged goods. Shane would bust that ass. Shane WBA Champion > Cotto WBO "champion" Why go for a worthless WBO trinket instead of a REAL title??? Hmmmm.
Bob Arum will never put Manny in the ring with Floyd. He doesn't have to. Arum knows Mayweather will get blamed if the fight doesn't happen...so he doesn't have to let his Golden-goose get all carved-up.
Ok, gentlemen, for your good judgement, the Weigh-In pics, my own prediction holds; a Cotto victory, albeit still a slim one.
Just an hour left, oh please, let the fight be bloody, I would be so happy for either man to leave on a stretcher...
Congrats to both Pac and FH!! My only complaint with the fight was that the ref jumped in at a strange moment, if he were going to stop Cotto taking punishment, it should have been around the 9th. As it was, there were only 55 seconds left, it would have been better to allow Cotto the manly dignity of either standing his ground until the final bell, or give us the pleasure of watching him get manly KO'ed. As it is, the ref took the worst of 3 options available to him.
Richard Schaefer from GBP said that he got the go ahead from Mayweather to begin negotiations with Arum yesterday. Despite all of the bad blood between Mayweather and Arum, I just don't see this fight not happening. There's way too much money involved for these guys to torpedo it because of their egos.
Man, Cotto has really gone overboard with those fucked up tattoos. I thought that those "tribal" pattern tats got played out years ago.
