Geek- even if you place him in that condition, I don't know what he has to lose? Over the last 30 yrs: he had directed numerous films, won an oscar and other awards, has traveled to some beautiful parts of the world, dated/sexed numerous gorgeous women, had a lavish life style. He has achieved a lot more in his career since the crime than I will ever have in my life time. So you put Polanski in house arrest at age 76, so what? The man had lived LIFE. Hmmm... I am still trying to figure out what would be the best punishment for this guy.
*Sigh* The mere fact that there is even a debate on if Roman Polanski should serve jail time or even be punished at all, speaks volumes on white privilege and our sucky justice system. Just imagine if Roman Polanski was black, or if his name was Denzel Washington, he would undoubtedly be under the jail.
You mean like how R Kelly is under the jail? Not just Illinios couldnt jail him, Florida either. Remember he beat the Fla charges because the search warrant didnt hold up. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/robertkelly1.html
btw - for what its worth.. there was a poll I just saw on TV where 87% ish think Polanski should be charged....
Ummm, no I suggested putting a black man in Roman Polanski's position. Say, Denzel Washington raped a 13yr old white girl and then tried to flee the country, do you honestly think that under the same cicrumstances Denzel wouldn't have been extradited and placed under the jail? As for R. Kelly, I do not support him and I do believe he is guilty, but at least R didn't flee the country after he was found guilty of the crime. At least he faced the consequences. We can't let this man (Polanski) blatantly disrespect our laws and get away with it. I don't think we can ignore the race issue and white privilege. Prime example is this ridiculous incident with Kanye. When it happened, okay, cool, everyone was talking about it. But now, it's over, no one was harmed and it's time to move on. But there are those who think that because of the player's involved, Kanye should and will be banned for life in the industry. The mans tour has even been cancelled, that's about race. So I shudder to think what would have happened to a Black director in the same position.
How the hell do you know his tour was cancelled because of race?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that Live Nation released the reason that tour was cancelled. Give me a break. Guilty people flee this country ALL THE TIME. Ever watch America's Most Wanted? Not all of them are white. And it has everything to do with not wanting to face the consequences of their actions. The reason he was allowed to get away with it for so long was because he's rich. That's it and that's all. It has nothing to do with his skin color. Not everything that happens in this country or anywhere else can be attributed to racism.
Yeah.. and although I completely agree on the white privilege and unfair judicial system - one need to not use that as an argument every single time something happens, some use it automatically. In this case, its more about rich and famous, imo.. The judicial system is biased ALSO in the favor of the rich and famous... I seriously doubt that the outcome, in this particular case would be different if it was Denzel (at Polanskis age and situation) - wouldnt have changed a thing... if it was a regular black dude... that is clearly another story.
How would I convict him? As an objective person, I think one year in jail should be enough. Plus his income of 2 years. This money would be for a foundation for abused children. As a victim I would say, give me 5 million and all is finished, (whatever I´d do with this money). As a member of the family of the victim.... it is better not to express what I think, would be the punishment .
I still say 4 weeks hard time is enough, at his age, but I hadn't considered hitting him in the pocket. Brilliant thinking, Chris. I'd actually be harder than you, financially, on him; 70% of his net wealth. Not sure about the Foundation idea, as charities give less than 10% of their income to their supposed beneficiaries, and I don't think these 'foundations' are much more efficient. I'd rather a government fund be created, and money placed into it to be roughly evenly distributed to abuse victims. As long as we're talking dollars and not Euros!! Ha, the imagination spins!! I'm a pacifist, so I could never go to the final extreme of taking a life; but pacifism doesn't mean passive. I'd get medieval on him if I caught him. Even after he paid I'd still slap him around, old man or no. For a few milliseconds, but deliberate misspelling is only effective when your actual spelling is largely faultless...still, you cannot be blamed for making mistakes, I read somewhere that you are Swede-ish. Now, THAT is a deliberate misspelling. And, you're welcome! :smt023
As long as we're talking dollars and not Euros!! For sure Euros-cash, on my swiss number account.. if you come with dollars, they close you all accounts immediatly..How do you want to declare this money? Nah, nah, you would loose it, before you got it!!! :smt103 :smt005 (all just a joke..)
How the hell do you know race didn't play a role in that situation? Everything was fine with Kanye's tour up until taylorswiftgate, anywho I digress, I don't want to hijack this thread, it isn't about Kanye West. So you can believe whatever the hell you want. My post still stands, I suggested putting a black man in Roman Polanski's position. The media and public fall out if this was Denzel, would've been worse than what OJ Simpson went through. They even crucified Janet Jackson over a nipple, imagine if an actual crime had occurred.
We don't know for sure yes or no. :smt102 Actions suggest yes. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-polanski3-2009oct03,0,6765170.story?track=rss The documents leave open the question of whether the fugitive filmmaker has ever paid the money he promised in the confidential 1993 settlement with Samantha Geimer, but a change in her approach to Polanski in subsequent years suggests they may have resolved the issue. In 1996, she was still trying to get the funds and even attempted to garnish his pay from movie studios. By the following year, she had stopped asking for court help to get paid and wrote a letter to a judge in support of Polanski returning to the United States and settling his criminal case without spending more time behind bars. I am uncomfortable equating R Kelly with Polansky. Kelly's alleged victim claimed till the end that it didn't happen and wanted no part of the accusation, Polanksy's victim says she said "no" repeatedly and faked an asthma attack to get away. Kelly never confessed, Polanksy confessed at least to having sex with the girl, and later wrote in his memoirs about having sex with other underaged girls in countries where that was legal. It is true that there is the damning evidence of the tape in the Kelly case, but even if that tape had convicted him, it would have been a conviction of statutory rape because there is no evidence on the tape that the sex was forced. Although Polanksy did not confess to forceable rape, his alleged victim claims it was, Kelly's does not. I think that is an important distinction, and not one to be glossed over.
As in all crimes a Black male will be punished more harshly than a White male. You can count with your fingers that a brother emerged unharmed by the legal system. Also a brother will spend twice as much to get out of jail.
Which victim of R Kellys? Because the child porn that was found at his Florida home, in his closet, on his camera, all we know is it was a different girl/girls. Justice had her day with R Kelly and he walked. I dont really care, but I wont pretend he didnt do some dirty shit.
If you have any information about any girl accusing R Kelly of forceable rape, I would be interested in it. To my knowledge, he has repeatedly been accused of sleeping with underaged girls, but I have never heard of him being accused of forceable rape. I could be wrong.
