Jaybee ventures into the kitchen...

Discussion in 'Conversations Between White Women and Black Men' started by Jaybee in WWBM, Sep 11, 2009.

  1. For the longest time, I've loved the taste of good cooking, I mean LOVED it - so much, I am not happy to leave the supply of taste to my tongue to others. Now, I want control; how much garlic, how much black pepper, onions/no onions, whether the cheese on the mash is unsmoked or smoked, etc.

To that end, I've started cooking, using Youtube videos to get the gist. My first dish? Beef Bourguignon. Marinaded the meat overnight in Cabernet Sauvignon, handfuls of cracked black pepper, made up the sauce, browned the rump, chopped up the carrots, glazed them and the pearl onions with the broth added it all together, then 6 hours on the saucepan...

Only an hour in, it already looks great!! Only just gone midday over here but I might have a little swig of that Sauvignon in a self-satisfied, albeit premature celebration!!

    :)

  4. You're both welcome at my table! Plenty of it left for two!

The sauce was absolutely delicious, I think I should have cooked it 4 hours and not 3, the beef was certainly edible but not as soft as needed (and I don't like it soft), but I was hungry and I am celebrating a friend's engagement tonight, so I couldn't dawdle...

Used instant mash with cheese and chives, controlled the amount of water until I had it at a fluffiness that I liked. Took the food out of the pan and into the dish, used my best china, poured out a gloriously large glass of Sauvignon to wash it down, hardly ever drink this early but I felt like getting into celebratory mode.

Sat down, took a picture of my first ever Jaybee-prepared meal, and put the meal to the test...

    YUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!

I think this was a very successful first dish. We men get a little uncertain and lost in the kitchen - hey, our fathers didn't prepare us for all this!! - but with some research and application, as well as a printout list of all the necessary steps on the kitchen workout, I didn't do too bad.

Apart from two burnt saucepans. They're soaking in hot water now.

    :)

    Good luck to you.

I read this and immediately thought of the movie "Julie & Julia". LOL.

You should start a blog. And maybe they'll make a movie about you, too! ;-)

I'm coming over for dinner, too!!!! mmm.

I'm a bit jaded on men that cook, now, thanks to attending school with so many culinary students (the vast majority of which are male)...but it still makes me happy to hear about non-chef men who like to cook, even if it's because of a desire for perfection.

Can't say I blame you, though! My boyfriend is no chef, but he can cook rather well. 90 percent of the time I'm the one cooking, though, because I kinda claim the cooking as my domain. I like to experiment with dishes, but I like to know what's going into my food, when it's going in, how it's going in, and how well done everything is. I'm extremely particular about my meats and their level of done-ness. Here in Texas everyone is very particular about beef, and people look at me strange when I order it well-done, but that's how I like it!

It's ok, though. He likes my cooking better than his, so it works out perfectly! :D

I want to see pictures of your dishes! You should start posting them so we can all drool on our keyboards.

  16. Oh, I can certainly dash out to Majestic if you're going to be, ummmm...coming.

    :)

Wow, lemme see, three, no, four....FIVE gorgeous ww at my table...what a lucky boy I am!! What did I do to be so blessed??

You asked for pics, and pics you shall have...while uploading from my mobile I admit I found one one I took of me in my gym, doesn't show my face but I'm a little shy about displaying my midsection which clearly shows the results of a tad too much good living.

Well here they are, sorry if I've broken anyone's monitor with the enormous pic sizes. All gags about my atrocious kitchen worktop management skills gleefully accepted.
