erictbrown1, I look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with you. My art form is Shorin Ryu Karate. I just sustain a debilitating injury to my left side of my body. I damaged my left knee and shoulder. My goal was to make black belt before the year is out. That is now not possible. I will not give up. For as long as it takes I will overcome this thing. I have two life goals. Get the black belt and go as high forward as I can to 8th degree black belt and get someday a doctorate degree, the PH.D. Who was your instructor when you got started and did you train here in the U.S. or in Korea if you were in the military?

I have a lot of respect for the grappling arts whether it's judo, jui jit su, aikido, hapkido, wrestling in their forms (greco-roman, catch as catch can, collegiate, sumo). Wrestling is one of the oldest of martial arts. In the western world when "the pankration" existed in Greece the form of combat then encompassed boxing, wrestling and kicking arts. I'm studying the combative nature of wrestling as in boxing and kickboxing as well to be a more well rounded martial artists.

Congrats GrecoJones84, correct me if I'm wrong, but is the nature of Greco-Roman is that all holds must be above the waist? I understand this method of fightng came from a combination of Greek and Roman combat methods in wrestling. I undrstand that the wrestling martial artist in Greco-Roman cannot not use leg holds or use the feet as is restricted by the rules of the sport. This limitation should not exist in true human combat. In true combat there is no rules.

True, there are no leg attacks, however Greco develops many essential skills in mixed martial arts, i.e. balance, hips, various ties (over/undre hooks). Some of the most successful mixed martial artists have a very strong Greco base. Randy Coture(sp?) Dan Henderson to are a few tht come to mind. It is apparent in their style, they can tie an opponent up and neutralize them with various ties, attack at will and control the pace.

Before my injury I enjoyed the following grappling fitness drill exercises I took part in one of my friend's saturday's mixed martial arts class:

    breaks, cartwheels, and tumbling drills

    side hopping drills

    shrimping drills

    climb the tree drills

    good morning drills

    rolling drills

    british bulldog drills

    guard drills

    rider and horse drills

    mat tag

    toilet ball

    sumo

    circle drills

    belt jump drills

    pick up and walk drills

leap frog drills (was my favorite)

    seated partner crunches

    standing partner crunches

belt tug of was (my favorite)

Some of these exercises will be incorporated into my recovery program.

Guys what do you think about the creation of an all male martial arts academy within the public school system particularly for the black male child? I may someday play with this idea at a selected school. If not in the public school then at a community center, a church organization or go private. It could be the catalyst for a new direction in the discipline and moral development of the black male child starting at the ages of 3 to 5. My dream someday is a "Warrior/Scholar Martial Arts Academy" for the black male child, specifically, that will exist to promote excellence in the warrior arts and academic development. In the increasingly technological society that we will become, the black male child must have the foundation to go forth and conquer his world in whatever he pursues.

Sounds like a great idea, you would probably have to go the private route. Realistically too many would be against spending their tax dollars on something they don't understand. I also think it would be helpfull to really emphasize Academics as equally or more important than martial arts.

people also won't be dumping tax dollars into an all-male program either. It's the 21st century after all. You just can't lock females in a dark corner and hope they never come out. The high school I used to go to was all-male, until they had to open it's doors to females. On the flip side, 'Girls' High,' an academic secondary school down the street from my high school, remains only open to girls. Interesting ain't it?

On a side note, I do recall our wrestling program having a female wrestler (lol?), but our football program was strictly swinging dicks....and got good, undiscriminating tax-dollars from both genders.

side note - Do you still MMA greco?

Title 9 guarantees women the same rights as men. If you're not a woman it probably means nothing to you.

The modern women’s movement achieved a
historic victory on June 23, 1972, when Title IX
was enacted as part of the Education Amendments.
The preamble to Title IX states: “No person
in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be
excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits
of, or be subject to discrimination under any
educational programs or activity receiving federal
financial assistance.” With this act, the role of
women and girls in education and the work
force began to change significantly. Title IX ensures
    legal protection against discrimination for
students and employees, which includes protection
    against sexual harassment. Specifically,
it prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender*
    in educational institutions receiving federal
    financial assistance.
    The act applies to public
    and private** schools, from kindergarten
through graduate schools, and covers admissions,
    recruitment, educational programs and
activities, course offerings and access, counseling,
    financial aid, employment assistance, facilities
and housing, health and insurance benefits
    and services, scholarships, and athletics.
It also protects from discrimination against
    marital and parental statusitle

The question still is can men have their own academies and schools as women now do. If a man cannot enter a female only school or program is that not discrimination. What laws protects the gender of the male in female only insitutions? I'm for equal rights for women, BUT, what about men's rights. Does it still exist?

I want to set the record straight here. I'm for females in martial arts schools and program. They make some of the best students from my experience. There has to be some programs in this country that address the horrendous status of the black male child in this society. Schools (martial arts or Academics) with strong black male role models and outstanding programs of excellence is the answer to reaching the black male child early in life to focus their minds, sharpen their character, and strengthen their discipline for the challenges of life. The black male child is for some reason always appear to be at the bottom of the barrel in the perception and mind of most people in this society right or wrong.

That video is a mixed martial arts match, i.e. all techniques are aloud boxing jujitsu etc. You are right there is no striking in wrestling! I never wrestled a Swede before, but I have locked horns with a pole several times earlier on in my career @ 105lbs hahaha.
