The problem is...if you only got 10 dollars for groceries, and you gotta stretch that over a couple weeks, the blatantly obvious, most cost effective option, is ramen. You can get ramen at between 5 and 15 cents a package, depending on where you buy it, and that's a meal in itself. Pastas usually run about 50 cents a meal, so even that is still more expensive.

I can't even buy an apple for less than 20 cents, and that's not enough for a full meal.

I switch it up by just buying cheap things, but ramen sometimes is the only option just because it's vastly cheaper than everything else. It sucks, but if you only got a couple dollars it's a much better idea to buy like 10 packs of ramen as opposed to 1 sandwich.

    It happens that way.

Malcolm Gladwell's novel, 'Outliers', included an account (at least I think so anyway) of a man that had an IQ in the neighborhood of 180 to 200 yet his job as a bouncer at a nightclub was probably the best he'd ever had. Eventually, I think he ended becoming successful in a variety of areas and has made good money. Talent and genius can be like giving a small longhorn, a large set of horns. It takes time to learn how to most effectively channel ones talents and natural gifts into something that can provide sustained economic benefit. (Don't I sound smart..LOL)

    :D

yes, well, if my poverty leads me to dying from an illness that won't be detected due to no health coverage before I manage to make my millions, then my genius is wasted! lol Time might not be something I got! ugh.

I just wanna be able to buy new clothes (cheap ones! but I need em. bad!) and groceries and a video game for my baby.

And a fucking bicycle so I have some wheels. Walking in Houston is ridiculous. 110F?! fuck that!

    That's where you are wrong.

I intend on cryogenically freezing your brain. In the next century, I will combine your brain into my brain making me some sort of supercomputer extraordinaire.

I say come to Dallas and enjoy our lovely 90 degree weather at 11 at night (humid but not tropical H-town). Go to El Paso...115 degrees and no humidity :)

I have arrived back to my family home after a 7 hour drive.

I had to say goodbye to the man today. :smt022

He gave me a really sweet travel kit with cards to open every 100 kms.

I am feeling rather sad and my heart hurts just a smidge. :(

We had a lovely morning together. He knew I was leaving today so he came over very early this morning, put flowers in my bed and made me coffee.

We talked for a couple of hours about "what next" and then I had to leave to gwt home before the crazy traffic in Toronto.

He packed me this 2 part travel bag.

Part one for the car: Kleenex (he knew I would be crying), a bottle of water, mints, a chocolate bar and lip balm. Plus a card for every 100 kms I had to drive. each one had the name of the place to stop and read it.

Part 2 for the plane: Gum, mints, hand lotion, a magazine, a pair of socks ( I have cold feet when I fly) and cards to read on take off and landing. And he bought me a new water bottle for the gym.

    :(

Yeah, have you tried to apply for foodstamps? I'm going to do that when I move. I remember when I was working and had my own apartment a long time ago and I even bought the generic ramen noodles for 10 cents a package and they came in only 3 flavors - beef, chicken, and oriental. I ate for 2 weeks (I was paid biweekly) for $2.80 LoL. I only ate twice a day. That's my norm. Anyway, I hope you're taking a multivitamin at least when you are just eating noodles! :)
Oh! and I sent you an e-mail about my apartment I'll be getting.

Got it. Will reply in a lil bit.

I tried for food stamps while I was pregnant, they said no then, and said no again after I lost the baby. But that was after they also said "No, we fucked up, but we're still not gonna cover your hospital bills because you're not pregnant anymore".

Apparently being a college student knocks me out of the possibility of getting food stamps.

I can't afford vitamins. :( I still have some prenatals left, but they just make me sad so I need to just throw them away.

Anyway, gonna try and shoot you an email in a sec. Got ten thousand people on facebook messaging me, ugh! I'm glad you're getting your own place..that's awesome!

you know, braiding hair is hard enough, but when the head attached to the hair you're braiding is a fucked up shape, then it's even harder!

I did good though. I gave his head the illusion that it was not crooked. I'm the shit! Did some nice fishbones, too. Wish I'd have got a picture, but he left before I remembered. lol

    1) I opted for the late night schedule at the bar/restaurant I currently work at. I did this because I could make more money and take my mind off of things that have been bothering me for awhile. The downside to making more money is that it's interfering with my school work. I have the day off today so I'll be able to catch up with everything I've missed.

    2) I plan on buying more rolls of canvases so I can complete work and have it submitted before the end of August. I don't know how this is going to work. Not to mention I don't know how I'm going to get it back home from Canal St. I'll figure out a way!

    3) Work, work, work...Friends have been calling concerned because all I do is work. I like it though, gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Oh and this site is pretty addictive.

D- there are resources available that can help you get thru tough times other than food stamp. Go to your local city hall etc... and find out the list of d/t agencies and so on in your city.

That is fucking crazy that they denied you foodstamps AND while you were pregnant? WTF is wrong with Texas? Christ! You need to move to Indiana. We have one of those art schools you're at now in Indianapolis. I have never heard of such a thing like denying someone foodstamps in your situation. I hope Green Zorro's advice will help you out. Damn. And yea, I think you should get rid of those prenatal vitamins hon'. It's bad Feng Shui (sorry, I've been a Feng Shui freak lately because I'm moving soon) for you to keep them in your home, especially with how they make you feel. :smt058

Lmao! I sure have missed your posts. :D

That's cool. Did you get an autograph?

I feel you. I don't know how the welfare system works in Texas but in California it's pretty bad.

When my Father and I came into some hard times we were denied food stamps three times. It was not until he got laid off than we could eat. It's a vicious cycle really because once he was employed they cut off our food stamps. The money he was making went all towards the rent because at the time they had jacked it up three times within three months. It's like this -- choose between having a place to stay or food in your stomach. It's all f*cked up really, the welfare system.

I wish you the best of luck though! :)

GZ - meh. Everything I call and talk to always gives me "Sorry, but you're not qualified cause you don't work full time." or "College students don't qualify" or "Fuck you, it's a bunch of bureaucratic bullshit and you'll never be able to figure out the maze of help, so just do us all a favor and stop wasting our time"

Ok, so the last one isn't a direct quote, but I've gotten the gist of it.

Britty - Oh, they were going to give me medicaid while I was pregnant, but they fucked up my paperwork and sent my application to the wrong place. I got the denial papers like a week after the miscarriage. They said, literaly "We're denying you because you could be approved for prenatal medicaid instead"...So, because I lost the baby before I could show those idiots their mistake, I was told "You're shit outta luck, ain't dick we can do for you". Despite my being told by others "Just go to this one specific office extremely far from your house, fill out these papers, tell them what happened, and it'll all be jiffy". They lied. All of the fuckers lied, and I was screwed because one fucker didn't know how to file paperwork correctly.

Last tally for my medical bills was just over 11 thousand dollars, and I'm still recieving bills for various things from the hospital.

As for foodstamps, they told me when I was pregnant I could get WIC instead, didn't need foodstamps, they said. But I had to be approved for medicaid before they'd give me WIC, since I didn't have any pay stubs due to not having a job.

Reason for my denial for foodstamps post miscarriage? I don't work full time, and even if I did, college student status, regardless of employment status, means instant denial for any help from the health and human resources department. Maybe it's just a Texas thing, I don't know. Back home? Being in college counts as a full time job and you're eligable for tons of government aid for things like housing, food, and transportation. Could be the huge poverty ratio there, but fuck...just cause I moved doesn't mean I'm not poor anymore.

Justagirlyinnewyorks - Yeah, it's bullshit trying to get any help in this country. I've had similar experiences. I think, honestly, you just really either need to know how to a) scam the system, or b) know people personally in the right offices to get any fucking help in this country. Where I'm from there are so many people on welfare and disability....yet the vast majority of those idiots are the lazy bastards everyone thinks all poor people are, just living off the government cause they don't wanna do shit with their lives. Nearly all the people I knew who actually needed help couldn't get it, because all of those lazy fuckers were bleeding all the resouces dry already. I personally witnessed my ex mother in law scamming the welfare office, but wasn't dick all I could do about it cause the bitch knew far too many of the right people.
