I think the difference between those guys, versus a Reggie Bush or Darren McFadden is the fact that Emmitt, Barry, Edge, Dunn, etc....all had very strong legs/lower body strength. When McFadden was coming out of college, the one big knock on him was the fact that his legs go "dead" on contact. He cannot move a pile, and he goes down at pretty much the first sign of contact. Bush is similar IMO. He is explosive, and can make people miss, but when they get their hands on him, he can't shed the tackle. I think that's what made players like Emmitt and Barry so great as smaller backs. Lower body strength seems to be more important than explosiveness. That's why my guess is that Maurice Jones Drew has a more productive career than either Bush or McFadden.
LOL.....Why didn't i think of that before? It should have been obvious that KK was the reason why Bush was so weak in the knees.:smt081
Very good analysis, that is why A. Peterson will soon break down IMO, he is too rangy body wise and his style of running is too impact-heavy.
mcfadden does have chicken legs compared to those archetype backs. Ever seen the commercial, where he's running through different backgrounds? I can't help but to notice that his legs are like a wideouts.' I wonder what he's squatting.
Ah, so very true. It's amazing people actually had doubts about Emmitt and Barry when they were drafted. Obviously Sanders faced less doubts as a top 5 pick in the '89 draft but that had more to do with once-in-a-lifetime agility and speed. People were still concerned over Emmitt and Barry's relative lack of size. It never made sense why people thought that being '6-2" and 220 lbs was so much better than '5-9" and 220 lbs. If the goal is to gain yards...i'd want someone that is stocky without too much surface area to hit. Peterson is an absolute freak of nature which is why he'll survive longer than most with his body type....think Eric Dickerson. Bush and McFadden on the other hand would probably make better receivers based on their body types...Bush in particular. If he was a bit shorter...his body would be more compact but at six feet tall and his frame...he's too lithe to carry the rock 300 times a year. Maybe he can be a Larry Centers type guy.
I agree with that. Eric Metcalf (who played with the Browns and Falcons back in the 90s) was the same way. The Saints should continue to use Bush that way. He's at his best returning kicks and punts and catching passes out of the backfield
JUST A TID BIT OF INFO FOR POJ Darren McFadden's Muscle Building Program Inside the NFL's Muscle Factory Oakland Raiders rookie Darren McFadden had a simple goal: to be the fastest and strongest running back in the NFL. So he put on 15 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Here's how Luckily, Johnson had plenty of raw materials to work with: "As good as Darren is," said Lance Walker, the center's 38-year-old director of performance, "he still has so much upside." No other major sports league rewards blue-chip rookies like the NFL does. Players drafted early are set for life. This year's first overall pick, Jake Long, already earns more than any offensive lineman in football. Heck, he earns more than Tom Brady made last year. If he excelled at the NFL Combine, McFadden would be paid like a superstar, before he took a single handoff. That's a lot of pressure on a 21-year-old. "Superior athletic ability is not enough anymore," Johnson said as he showed me around. "You can have talent and a great work ethic, but if you're not working smart, you're not getting better. We show our athletes how to work smart." As he said this, McFadden slid onto a bench, prepping his grip on the 225-pound bar. At the Combine, athletes are judged not on how much weight they lift, but on how many reps they can complete. McFadden took three deep breaths and began. "Come on! Explode!" Walker encouraged. McFadden picked up speed and hammered out 16 reps--a below-average total for a running back. Walker turned to me. "He's still recovering." Indeed, McFadden was battered and bruised from his junior year at Arkansas, when he averaged almost 40 touches a game and ran for more than 1,800 yards. If you're looking for a one-game microcosm of his season, go back to Baton Rouge on November 23, 2007. LSU was the number-one team in the nation and hoping to stay on track for a BCS title shot. The game was in Tiger Stadium, a.k.a. Death Valley, where LSU had won 19 straight. When McFadden took the field, he faced the best team in the country, fueled by 90,000 delirious fans. Then, over 4 grueling hours, he silenced them with 206 yards and three touchdowns rushing, including a 73-yard run in the third quarter. He also threw a critical TD in the fourth quarter. After the triple-overtime thriller, defeated LSU coach Les Miles admitted he had assigned two of his best defenders to shadow McFadden for the entire game. "He didn't go down," Miles said. Indeed, McFadden plays every game, every play, at full speed. And it takes a toll. When he arrived at Johnson's facility, he hadn't done a single squat since a knee injury and surgery in high school (and still never missed a game). His college coaches wouldn't let him. "When you have a star like Darren, you don't want to mess him up," said Walker. "But it's our job to find holes in his potential, so he can optimize his performance. And the squat trains the knees, hips, and ankles in a way that's functional for football. It can make you faster and it allows you to feel more stable on cuts and breaks." Almost on cue, McFadden moved to the squat rack and did a light set at 135 pounds. He was improving, but he had a ways to go. (The average NFL player can squat 500 pounds.) "We're starting slow," Walker told me. "But soon, we'll have his core and joint stability back to where it should be, and we'll add some load to him." Two weeks later, McFadden squatted 405 pounds five times.
I still think there is something to the "fire hydrant legs" theory. So many of the greats, big and small, have thighs and calves as big as their prospective girlfriends and wives. Chicken legs can be athletic as many a NBA player can leap 40 inches in the air without much thought and look down at a pair of wire hanger-thin calves after the jump. If McFadden can increase not only strength but power in the legs...and then use that on the field..he's going to be tough.

Speculation Will Chris Brown be KK's next suitor? Hollywood Gossip speculates: If we weigh the pros and cons of a possible Kim Kardashian/Chris Brown relationship, we come across far more pluses to this hook-up than minuses. To wit: PROS Based on the appearance of Kim's recent string of ex-boyfriends - Nick Cannon, Ray J and Bush - Brown fits her dating profile. We'll leave it at that. Alliteratively, Chris would fit in perfectly with the Kardashian clan. Both Kardashian and Brown share a passion for controversial videos, with the former getting more naked in hers than the latter got in his. Neither is working much these days. Both are known for body parts that cannot be avoided: Kim's ass, Chris' fists. CONS Brown beat Rihanna into a bloody mess. http://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2009/07/should-kim-kardashian-date-chris-brown/
Nope. Something tells me this time around she's looking for someone older that's ready to "settle down".
He's a RB. He needs to be hitting the 550-600 mark. He's squatting like a receiver, that's been doing squats for a while ( I bet TO can hit 405 ). Speed alone at RB doesn't cut it in the NFL, at least from what I've seen (unlike college, most of the guys you're facing can turn it on, just like you). You need to have some diesel-ness to you. Coaches know RBs are going to get smacked everytime they get a carry. So, it becomes a matter of handling those smacks and breaking away from em.
brotha with the hankerchief looks like Marshall Faulk. Didn't know Snoop's spoiled ass was a Raven's fan tho. Thought he would represent Oakland or something.
Read in the latest National Inquirer that Reggie is trying to get back to Kim. Hope there is more proof.
