Question about the South

Southern California and Los Angeles had a lot of blacks back in the day, but now many have relocated to the South. I've never quite understood what's so special about the South because my views about it were mostly negative.

The main question is what is so special about the South? Do you think that blacks will eventually return to the West Coast someday?

Do you think if more blacks emigrated to the South, more white women would reject us in the West?

The reasons blacks are returning to the south is because of:

    - low cost of living

    - southern cities like Atlanta are now competing with the other major cities in regards to jobs

    - Up and coming cities like Raleigh and Charlotte mean that the low cost of living now can potentially equate to profits from homeownership later as the cities grow.

    - There is a strong black middle class in cities like Atlanta where eastern/western families can reunite with their pre great migration relatives and still find white collar work.

Personally...Alot of my relatives have moved to Atlanta and i never will. None of them have roots in Georgia but rather Texas. Although blacks are doing well in some southern cities, its still polarized. Blacks do whats "black" and whites do whats "white" unless its lower class white kids glorifying what they see on BET. There is no progressive multi-ethnic culture yet so i cant see myself justifying it in my lifetime.

I think DH can tell you that Houston, Texas is far more progressive and mixed than most cities north of the Mason-Dixon.

I agree that many black folks out on the west coast came from Louisiana and Texas the same way most blacks in Chicago have families from Mississppi and lots of New Yorkers can trace their roots to the Carolinas and Georgia.

Atlanta is a tad overrated in my opinion as a "black" city with some juice. The job growth in the south is considerably faster than many parts of the nation and there is a strong need in Dallas and the Carolinas and parts of Virginia for educated folks looking to make a good living.

A professional in Los Angeles or New York might earn 95k in a particular field and only earn 60k in city like Dallas, Richmond, Houston etc. However, that person making 60k in the south can move towards buying a nice home in a good school district instead of buying an apartment/condo where the rent would exceed the cost of their mortgage.

The biggest misconception about the south is that it is not "progressive." What most fail to miss is that although a state like Texas is considered a "red" state, the only reason that is the case is that in all the small towns, they vote for the GOP. Virtually all large cities in the south are progressive with a southern drawl. (For example, Dallas is thought to be the least progressive of the big cities in Texas relative to San Antonio, Houston and Austin yet Obama received 60% of the vote) A state like Texas isn't much different from New York or California except that our Bubba's wear mullets and go hunting while their Bubba's aren't called Bubba but vote and have political views that aren't much different.

This is not 1955 and the so-called "progressive" areas of the nation are just as segregated as anywhere else. Just because the whites don't sound like rednecks doesn't mean they aren't rednecks.

Texas is a beast of its own. Large states tend to be that way

I agree about some northern cities having its share of intolerance. ive made post about DC being that way. Boston is notorious.
Ive lived in Memphis and Atlanta and while Northern and western cities have their issues, at least progressive communities and mindsets actually exist.

The guys in here pretty much covered why some people are moving south but nobody really answered your question about picking up women so I will --

Of course you can still pick up women in California if more blacks move away. I used to live in West Virginia a state that is 96% white and had success with quality young ladies.

Honestly- in my personal experieces when I was in a place that was a majority of blacks alot of the women like thug/trashy types and were just nastier themselves. This wasnt even in a ghetto either. Like I said that is just my personal experience.

Return to the West Coast? They migrated to the West Coast from the South during the early part of the 20th century. So what you see now, is blacks returning to the South.

I dunno what the future holds but my best prediction is that the South will become politically dominated by Black folks. Most of it is heavily populated with Black folk but they arent as politically strong as other ethnicities. Personally, I feel the South is gonna be a political strong hold for black politics.

There were several examples of strong, wealthy black towns or communities. I can see that happening again and this time overt destructive actions wont be tolerated. Now covert is another story...

    Truedat my friend.

I think location matters little once you find that WW that knocks your socks off....my guess is that in the west and the north, people think similarly but won't say anything while people in the south may actually blurt something out and say something dumb
