You're exactly right CBQ. I grew up in the suburbs, I was a teenager when this was really amplified--in 1976 during the Bicentennial Celebration. I was waving flags along with my black, white and mexican-american neighbors, but like you say, there was a underlying feeling amongst some black and minorities. Some whites acknowledged it and spoke of it as well. Richard Pryor captured it humorously and chillingly in this classic album. You shoud check it out, it is fantastic. It is called Bicentennial Nigger:
I'm Native American and I celebrate both, and I know many Native Americans that celebrate both. Depends on how you were raised and what you were taught. Some still carry that pain from all those years ago and don't celebrate.
I knew a lot of Natve Americans when I lived in OK. What percentage Native American are you learnin2fly?
Okay, in your previous post you said you were Native American, so I assumed you meant you were the daughter of Native Americans, maybe were discriminated against or something. I was curious because you posted your pic a while back and you appeared to be your basic white person to me, I didn't see any features that I would recognize as native american.
that's because i'm half white. genetics are a funny thing, i look like your average everyday white girl...but my cousins (who are also half white) look more asian and native than i do! the only point i was trying to make was that despite the past, as americans we should celebrate our country's independence. wow, i just took this thread off course, sorry
what features would you need to see to recognize that Obama was actually part white 'brotha in the white house, ya'll'
Johnny Depp is 1/4 Native American as well. I've heard NA people joke before that this is why he appears not to ever age (a Native American variation on 'Black don't crack'). If this is true, all you single guys should take note: learnin2fly08's gonna look 25 when she's 43. Just saying.
A lot of ppl ( blk or white) have native american blood flowin' in their vien. I have seen white folks with blonde hair and blue eyes (who look like straight out of Viking lands) with 25-50 % Indian genes. Also seen black folks as dark as Wesley Snipes with Indian blood, some of them you can tell by their hair others you can't. I'm sure y'al heard of the sayin' "part Injun... the "I'm part Indian, that's why I got 'good hair'" Native Pride-
well..i never met a black person who refers to indians as 'injuns' usually u see some country ass hillbilly using that term lol and 'good hair' did we NOT have a lengthy discussion about that term and what it implies, before? shit was lookin like straight Bosnia up in this piece after that :smt062
I have (not too many ppl do it though), they're using the term as endearment, same as my nigga. Basically makin' fun of the white hill billy who came up with the word.
I was dating this Cherokee guy back in Texas - he acctually had a T-shirt that said "Injun" on it - no shit.. As a foreigner, it took me a while to figure out what it acctually said
lmao :smt088 well shit..Nas did wear a shirt, to a high profile awards (grammys I think), with the N word written on it
This guy had black hair down to his waist and it is fair to say it was evident he was of Native American descent.. and the T-shirt still made some people uncomfortable. It was quite amusing, it was like some people felt caught in the way they were thinking - guilty... Man, I missed Nas Tshirt
