angry women in my classes

I haven't been on much lately because I've been busy with work and finishing up my master's classes for the semester. The bulk of people in my program are bw. There are a few who are my age and we hang out together and get along well. There is another group of older bw who are bitter and sit in the back of our classroom making bitchy comments and giggling with each other.

Race and diversity is often a topic brought up in our classes, and these women have said some ignorant shit. One night, they discussed how "those in positions of power" are constantly raising educational requirements for certain jobs to keep black folks down. They said, "Now that black folks are getting bachelor's degrees, they're raising the bar to a master's degree level."

Another thing these women said was that our local school district is considering not recognizing educators with master's degrees obtained online because so many black teachers have them. I've never heard about the district considering this (I work for them), and many of the people in positions of power in our district are black! Our own white superintendent got his doctorate online.

I have two more semesters with these women, and I'm sick of hearing them whine about imagined injustices. Yes, I'm sure they've encountered actual racism in their lives. However, the things they complain about are ridiculous and seem to be said with the intent to justify their racism toward whites. Do you suggest I say anything to them? It really brings down the morale of the class and makes the white people not want to participate in the discussions.

I think you should say something to them. It would be even better if you guys were to have open discussion like in my Minorities in America class. It depends on how you look at the situation about the standards being raised. It ties into institutional racism/prejudice/discrimination, so it's not really intentional, if it is happening at all. But yeah, if you feel you should say something, say it. Ask the professor if you guys could have an open discussion. You get a lot of good/interesting answers.

    My advice, just ignore them.:smt009

Usually when women of their ilk become bitter, they cling to fashion and religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them with racist sentiment or anger against WW as a way to explain their frustrations.

I highly suggest that you not say anything to them directly because they might make an ugly scene and pull your hair out.

Seriously, don't bother with them because I am sure the conversation would be unpleasant at best. I would let the instructor know that they are bothersome and stifiling the learning. Too bad you are stuck in class with them.

BTW I would feel sorry for any BM in your class who would sit next to you and try to get to know you. He would catch hell from these women no doubt.

Ignore them, I have a few in my current classes. I have to say in my sociology class we do have fireworks on the issue of interracial dynamics. They will be bitter until their dying days. Let them die unhappy. The important thing is that you leap over them.

...but well worth the effort if it means avoiding women like the ones mentioned above.

bean...i agree with the response of "say nothing"...you would just be falling into a trap...they would love for you to challenge them so that they could make the class all about them and their argument...better to just put them on ignore and let them be miserable all by themselves...

i would however take every opportunity to sit next to any all bm in your class...that will keep them busy:smt047

I still get 'the look' every now and then, if i'm seen chatting up some pretty little white girl where I work, because for the most part, I don't really pay black women any mind.

Then, when you do decide to pay them mind, they tell you to leave them alone, because they don't want to talk to a black man who likes white girls.

    lol

I'd like to thank everyone for their advice! I was initially considering bringing it up in class as an "educational" topic, but I think many of you are probably right about these women. They make these inflammatory comments so they can illicit some kind of response from the few wm and mostly ww in our classes. They are looking for half a reason to justify going crazy.

My instructor in one class was a bm about 30 years old and he would get this look of absolute mortification when they made these comments. There's been one bm student in my classes and I noticed he sat as far from the bitter women as possible. This, however, did not stop them from catcalling him!

    lol

he brings another interesting point tho...

even liking light skinned sistahs, gets you in hot water sometimes...

god forbid if they're light and have long, REAL hair like 'Cassie'

they think you have some light-skin complex or something, and say you have a mental issue
