I have an old audio recording of Roddenberry, and he talks about the Next Gen character Data. He says that he wanted the character of Data in the original series.

Roddenberry said you can tell that all the racist mythologies that White men made up about Black men were based on their fears that Black Men might be superior to them. So he created this character who WAS superior, and do you know what the first objection was from TPTB? They wouldn't let him have the character on the OS, because they were afraid he'd have the character dating White Women.

 

There's no reason for you to refuse to see Star Trek! What's the point of demanding until we do actually see black men and white women in the films? Beyond the films, I don't care about refusing to see Star Trek! All I cares is STORYLINE! That's something, man. What's wrong with that now? :smt108

Heh! Thanks, Tony! That dude who created the most silliest thread that he has to offer us to commented his thread. However, it's very stupid for not to refuse to see star trek the movie. Sooner or later, he'll have no choice, but to see the movie, based on good solid storyline that has to offer to making us enjoying the film!

 

If a person doesn't want to see a film because of a political, social, moral, artistic reason, etc, then so be it. None of you are losing money if this one person doesn't buy a freakin' ticket. Even if you think his reason is bogus so what? To each his own. If the guy legitimately feels this way, even if the majority of you think its nuts, then I applaud him for sticking to his convictions by bypassing the film.

I'm not seeing it either. But then again I have refused to see a Trek movie in the theaters since Generations (all the TNG movies sucked anyway). I have no desire to see Teen Trek which is how I refer to this film. A movie taht's essentially made for teens and filled with teen-aged looking cast members. And though TOS isn't my fave Trek I have too much fondness for that original cast of actors to see a new cast fill in the roles. This isn't like James Bond or Batman. Those characters first appeared in books and comic books respectively before actors started playing them in film and on TV. Well, Kirk and Spock were introduced to the public for the first time via guys like Shatner and Nimoy. They are the only ones I will ever consider to be right for those roles.

 

I'm not going to arguing with you there. Most of us are entitled to our options on this forum. Granted, to each of our own, but it bothers me that both of you are refused to see Star Trek the movie this year. Don't expecting for Hollywood to feed your hunger to satisfactory to your demands, because you just simply refusing to see star trek that you said it yourself, I don't know what's your problem towards this film, but this is completely new franchise now, like it or not, you'll have to accept it. There are so many rave reviews about this film, it's very positive.

Rest assure, I'm not going to complaining on how bad this star trek is until I see the film myself in the following week. All I care is storyline and observe the film to enter my line of thoughts. I do trust J.J. Abrams to handle this star trek franchise. Sorry to disappointed you, I heard a word that they're going to work on next star trek movie, possible tv series for this. So don't complaining on this film itself, take it to that man who handle this franchise, J.J. Abrams himself. YOU tell him yourself to express your concerns! I doubt that he will be more than happy to answer your question that you very much needed to see.

Dude, I'm just not interested. That's all. I rarely see any of these big budget mainstream films anymore. And my love of Trek died after DS9 went off the air. I simply don't care. To say that a person has a problem for not seeing this movie is it a bit overkill. Most Americans won't see this film. Even the biggest hits in any given year are not seen by most American viewers. Its okay. Life moves on. I hope you enjoyed the flick. I know a couple of friends who loved it. Still ain't seeing it. Won't be seeing Transformers or GI Joe either even if they get reviews to match Citizen Kane and The Godfather.

 

Just to let you know the actress Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura is actually is Latin American from the Dominican Republic.

 

I agree - I have no interrest in seing the movie for the same reason. I lost interrest after DS9. Funny thing is that when Voyager came along, it was said by many that it was so much closer to the original (or something of that nature) and a lot of my firends the thought it was way better than DS9.
I tried to watch Voyager for that reason, but it was just so freaking BORING, I lost interrest very quickly.

 

Oh, Lord. I feel a lesson/lecture from me coming on:

Okay? Latin is not a race. Latino/Latina is not a race. Hispanic is not a race. Instead these terms were crested to describe people of a certain culture rather than a certain racial category. A Hispanic can be white, black, Amerindian/indigenous, mestizo (mixture of European and Amerindian/indigenous people), mulatto, etc. When you consider the Phillipines (Spanish speaking country) you can place Asian under the Hispanic tent as well.

So a girl like Zoe is latin/Hispanic but she is a Hispanic of African descent, or a black Hispanic or at the very least a mulatto Hispanic. There are millions upon millions upon millions of Hispanics of African ancestry. They go way underrepresented, especially in the media. But remember more African slaves were brought to South America and the Carribean islands than they were to North America. In fact Brazil, a South American country, has more blacks than any other country outside Africa. But, as mentioned, above Brazil isn't technically considered a country of Hispanics because the official language of Brazil is Portugese, not Spanish. But of course the Hispanic media claims Brazillians often as Hispanics anyway as they do Spanish (European stars) such as Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz. Outside of America and outside of Hispanic communities in parts of Central America and South America, no one considers people from Spain though to be Hispanics/Latinos.

So lts use examples to help make this clear:

-White Hispanic is someone like Cameron Diaz whse father is Cuban. Cam will from time to time discuss her Hispanic heritage and attend Hispanic Awards Ceremony. But since Cam is blonde and blue eyed the Hispanic media doesn't try to claim her nearly as much because they probably know that Cameron likes being viewed as non-ethnic white which is the top of the totem pole in the racial hiearchy in this world.

-Amerindian/indigenous are well the type of reddish or golden skin new immigrants that you see in the USA increasingly. Not to stereotype but they are often short of stature. These people are the original inhabitants of America, North and South. They are Native Americans for all intents and purposes.

-Mestizo Hispanic would be someone like Jennifer Lopez or Ricky Martin. They are arguably the most popular types one can find in ballroom dancing.

-Black Hispanic people are folks like Roberto Clemente and basically every Dominican baseball player, the actor Laz Alonso, the woman married to Laurence Fishburne who was in Firefly and the Matrix sequels, the DeBarge clan, Rosario Dawson and Zoe Saldana. Sometimes these folks can be listed under mulatto Hispanics if the racial background of one of their parents warrant it. When these folks get big the Hispanic media goes out of its way to claim the probably figuring that given the chance individuals like them would surely like to hide behind the Hispanic label than be classified under the "black" label (considering black is arguably at the bottom of the racial hiearchy in most folks' eyes). Dominicans of African descent especially love to run away from "black", particularly if their skin is light enough. Some claim Zoe will be like that but in her defense I must say she has been willingly going out for roles made for African American characters, including in a handful of independent black films which would never have boosted her stature in Hollywood.

Alright. Sorry for the rant. But someone needs to copy this for use in case the need for it comes up again.

 

Voyager tried to get away from the DS9 conflict and intentionally tried to be a Next Generation clone. When that didn't work for the ratings it brought on Seven of Boobs to add :gasp: conflict to the show, but it then claimed it was doing so in the spirit of Classic Trek. It is simply a rehash of the previous ship-bound series of Trek. Most critics and fans consider it to be a failure.

 

hey guys I just saw the star trek movie and its really good. I was initially worried they might spend the entire movie exploiting the bw. It wasnt even like that she only kisses him on the lips. And the story line is beyond race or anything like that. It would have been great to have a leading black male character, otherwise the rest of the film is pretty good. I would definitely recommend everyone to go see it.

 

Why was it necessary that any of us needed to know that??? Yeah, Jamal gave a short lesson on racial identity, which was good. But why is it ALWAYS necessary to point out the exact race/ethnicity of someone in a movie like that? IMO, it's just Hollywood poisoning us with more of their race rules. See, at least in the '60s, Roddenberry had the guts to cast a real black american female in the role probably despite much controversy. Now it seems like every female ethnic role in the new Hollywood generation (JJ Abrams, Sam Raimi, etc.) seems to go to a latin female instead of a black woman. Which, as usual, goes to the heart of our discussions about these movies in general. Some of the castings can be quite racist and generally take good roles away from qualified black actors.

As for Zoe, I've never trully been a fan. Everything from Drumline to Constellation to a few other lesser known deals, her characters haven't quite impressed me. Yes, she is quite pretty. And no, I didn't know she was dominican and didn't care. I stopped getting sucked into looking up actor's race and background awhile ago. This country just sickens me with how we must identify race constantly.

 

You can count me in for one of those not going to see it. The main reason is I've seen EVERY Star Trek there is. And read a few books as well. This is nothing new for me. However, it is quite new to the new generation of young people out there who only have a passable knowledge of the franchise. It's probably filmed with alot of face-paced action that they would love. But again, I've been there and seen that and it's nothing new. Oh, and it's not a NEW franchise, just a fresh spin on the original. Plus everybody knows that those critics and "reviews" are very partial to the movie industry. A good review helps to better sell the product and get people interested in seeing it.

I'm glad that you have so much faith in JJ. That's good because he'll need it if they attempt to bring it to tv. It's easier said than done. Just ask Rick Berman and Michael Piller about DS9. They tried to spin it off from TNG and ended up having to go sydication and start an interstellar war in the storyline in order to keep it on. And let's not start on the others shall we. This American audience is just too fickle to have any patience for another weekly Star Trek series, regardless of who's sitting in the captain's chair.

Oh and finally, you're not disappointing anyone by stating that there will be another movie. THERE'S ALWAYS ANOTHER MOVIE. Clearly ya'll haven't been paying attention but Hollywood makes these action flicks in threes now. And star trek is notorious for making several movies and sucking all the life out of it's crew. And if what you're saying passes, remember two very specific things about this series. One, with each movie, the main cast/crew will get significantly less of a role in the storyline as it will be devoted largely to Kirk, Spock and McCoy. And two, every other movie will SUCK. No joke. Strangely enough, ALL the odd numbered star trek movies had weaker storylines for some reason IMO. Just some things to think about.

 

Malikom, don't hold your breath. Remember, Hollywood make movies for middle America and most middle America doesn't want to see interracial romance of any kind.

As I always say, "If you want to see white women and black men making love on screen instead of fantasizing do one of 2 things: Either get in an interracial relationship and capture the sex on video or . . . rent interracial porn."

So what if she willingly goes for roles made for African American characters.She has no choice.If hollywood directors want a "latina" to play a role,they arent going to go to zoe,or any balck latina actress.They are going to go to somebody like rosario dawson,mesizta looking latinas.Afro latinos have no choice but to go for roles played by African Americans.Not because they want to,but because they have no choice.Believe me,they would love to play the standard "latina" roles...........

 

Dude, this girl has been in enough mainstream films to keep doing nothing but mainstream films. And yet she continued to work in low budget films by black filmmakers in which she plays African American characters. She didn't have to do that. Its not as if those films paid her lots of money or got her tons of exposure. She didn't have to go anywhere near those types of films. But unlike actresses such as Rosario Dawson Zoe hasn't avoided doing stuff like that. Give her some credit.

 

And almost always her love interest is white, regardless if it is a black movie or not.

All black female actresses in Hollywood will/has done a white male love interest in movies to solidify their position in Hollywood. Hell, I just saw Tenishina Campbell (Martin) doing a sex scene with a white male in some old Lifetime movie.

And going back to Zoe, she will costar in Avatar, which is about a group of humans fighting aliens on the alien's world. Zoe will play the queen of her people (all the aliens are Black). Now will the Queen of this Black alien people will fall in love with the (white) foreigners and rule by her side? I will have no doubt that it will happen. Hollywood, including that sambo Tyler Perry produces films to sublty put-down black men.

And nobody bats a eyelid. I wonder when Meagan Good will get her role?
