Dating someone from a different socio-economic background

How important do you think it is to date someone from the same socio-economic background. If you are a professional does your partner have to be one also?

Since I began working, I have become more conscientious about the ambition and education of the person I will date. Some may regard this as snobbish, others may see it as imperative.

Personally, I would prefer a woman who has a degree because I think it will improve the chance of us being on a similar wavelength but I wouldn't disregard a woman who doesn't have one, I could be missing out on a great person and you do not neccesarily need to go to university to be educated.

What I would ask for is a modicum of ambition, someone who wants to better thereself financially and isn't content with working the same low paid job forever.

As long as she's got something good going for herself and doesn't have to rely on me all the time, she's in. I don't care if she has a college degree or not.

I come from a working class background and I find it difficult to date middle class/upper class people. I think I've only ever dated one middle class guy and his parents were self made and had their own glass business so he was involved in that and actually appreciated the work that went into that. Even when it comes to my friends, I find that the ones from better economic backgrounds find it very difficult to relate. This doesn't stop me being friends with them (as long as they aren't ignorant to my background or make fun of it) but I do feel closer to my working class friends.

I'm the same as you though, I always go for guys who either have a degree or are at university. My friends accuse me of being snobbish as well but I don't think that's the case. I'm educated myself so I find it important for my partner to be educated, or at least in a good job with aspirations and a future.
Funnily enough though, I always go for working class boys. I do go for educated guys but their background is often very similar to my own. I feel more comfortable with them than with guys whos' parents paid for their universities and bought them a car, you know? I also find them to be more humble and I really value that in a person.

I agree with Russia on every point.

I don't think the social class where the person is from can be important (I'll explain), but I think that education is more important.
About social environment, I think I could easily be with somebody who comes from a "lower" environment (kind of impossible, since me and my family are quite poor), but I'm not sure I could date rich people. I feel unconfortable when I see people spending too much on clothes, cars etc. It's not my thing. I've grown up with the value of the money in my mind and unfortunately most of rich ppl I've met (at school, for eg), don't care about spending it or not.
I could date a rich person if he was a nice person and didn't try to make me look as "the poor one".
Btw, what I really think is important in a person isn't really the social environment (which yes, infleunces ppl), but the education/culture. There are professionals/rich ppl who are very ignorant or think they are God's gift to the world and act as everything is garanted, and there are ppl who come from poor families that have studied and use their knowledge, value education, are curious to learn and to see things, are respectfull.
Personally I always thought I would have felt better with somebody with a degree, but I must say that I met ppl without a degree that like to study, are curious about what happens in the world etc, so maybe I shouldn't even say that the important thing is education, but ppl's approach to knowledge. My ex is the person I admired more and he just went to high school. He knew a lot of things though, and he thought I knew a lot of things too. He read a lot, he was interested in a lot of stuff I was interested too, he payed attention to little things that happened around him. We knew different things and I thought we could match because we could learn from each others.
I don't know if I could be with someone like Satyricon though... I'd have inferiority feelings all the time... LOL
Uhm this post is a bit confusional but oh well, when I let my mind trip, that's how it goes LOL.

i would if she were educated and didnt have hang ups about her class, ie having some romance with being poor or working class or attacking others for being well off or rich.

I wouldn't just have a complex about the correctness of my grammar, but I think I'd need a thesaurus....he needs a smarty pants lady who had a similar verbal score on the SAT...

Socioeconomic class is and was important to me. Only once my parents found out that my husband and I were from the same socioeconomic class did they begin to accept our marriage. That gives you an idea of how I was raise and why class is important to me though it probably shouldn't be.

I wouldn't have a problem with my sons dating/marrying from a lower socioeconomic class as long as the person was interested in upward mobility.

I started responding to this thread a couple of other times/days, but changed my mind at the last minute and didn't post them. So, here's a third attempt. I don't want a dumbass, no, but I don't want him to make me feel like a dumbass either. So maybe about the same would be best for me. Someone who doesn't make you feel too superior or too inferior, or something. As long as we understand each other and can communicate smoothly and take care of ourselves and each other, I'm a be happy camper. Yea. :smt023

Sorry Allilyn, you have always been one of my fav posters but this makes me very queasy.

I am very comfortable with myself, where I am at, all that kinda jazz. I just cant imagine a life of striving to obtain. I usually avoid upwardly mobile people at all cost. I dont want to get stepped on while they are trying to climb.
