On the Road Again: workouts while traveling

I always pack my workout gear, but sometimes it is a challenge to put it to use. When I'm in a hotel with a gym it helps.

I'm in the US right now and busy keeping a weird schedule. Also eating too much restaurant food. Time to do some pushups and get out an run (kicking myself in the butt)

How do you stay in shape while on the road?

If i'm in a hotel, I usually hit their gym like you mentioned above.

I do some of my home training with resistance bands anyway, which makes portability for those no problem.

When I used to sell sneakers, I would knock out a set of pull-ups using the overhead beams, where we kept our shoes, when I went to the back to get them. I guess people were scratching their heads like 'did he get bigger after coming back there?'

I tend to use whatever is at my disposal to get it in.

late edit - I'd recommend looking into resistance band equipment. Athletes ranging from Mixed Martial Artists to football players use them. You can get setups that allow you to work your upper and lower body, or you can just get some for push-ups. Great alternative workout to iron.

I agree with the resistance bands as a good portable workout. I have Spri resistance bands and I take them with me. That way I know if nothing is available I can just pull them out. Their website has loads of videos with workouts so you can get ideas what to do. www.spri.com

Happened to buy some resistance bands yesterday as I travel quite a bit, too.

Another piece of equipment that is pretty compact is a chin-up bar for doorways. It's not quite small enough for carry-on baggage, but would fit in checked baggage fine.

I have used the bands before, they are quite good. I prefer pushups though. Doing 100 in 4-5 sets in 10 minutes time will swell me right up.

    u aint lyin...

one of my coworkers agrees with you too..

he happens to be bigger than me and was like 'don't knock pushups'

    ;)

As for the bands, I like them as an alternative to the bench press, in the fact that it adds resistance to a normal movement. The only drawback for me is keeping proper form with the bands, especially as I get bigger. I have a 240lb resistance set along with a 120lb resistance set, and usually mix the bands to warm up with around 160lbs of resistance and then use 200lbs for the rest of my sets.

    Form, Form, Form.

As for the pull up bar. They're making so many types now, that you have no excuse for not doing them, wherever u are.

    :)

Yep. 100 push-ups (one set) per day for me as well although some days they are more like half push-ups because I don't go all the way down to the floor. On those days, I'll do two sets. They don't count as part of the workout anymore. I simply have to do them.

I figure that when I'm not traveling, I'll just use the bands to add some variety to what I already do i.e. resistance push-ups. There's no way they'll replace the exercise itself, though.

Since some of the gyms at hotels lack sometimes, I also find myself doing chair dips for the triceps or even full dips if they have counter tops that are close enough together.

Jordan I have seen from your other posts that you are a serious runner, which I admire. Do you get out and run through whatever area you're visiting? I love to do that.

No not so much. I can't run on concrete/shin splints. I run on a trail here that is dirt/mini chipped rock that I love. It's all hill and kind of nowhere. We had a mild winter and even after one snow that fell during the night I went to run on it the next morning and it was amazing all white everywhere and I was all alone. Then when I had to run back down and was slipping the whole way I was thinking "I hope I don't slip and knock myself out and lay here for days." :?

I got a set of bands that I use mainly for cable crossovers at the crib. Outside of that, I do not like the bands at all. On the road or at home, there is not much better than good ol' fashioned pushups and crunches.

For pushups, I try to mix it up a bit between standard, diamond and 1 leg.

80 push ups/min (3 times before each meal)

100m sprints under 10.8 secs (3 times before each meal)

Thats pretty much it for me.

I dont wanna get "too" big though, so losing a few lbs on the road isn't too bad, as long as its within limits (5-10 lbs). Im only 200 lbs, but for my height 6'2.5"....i would personally need a valid reason to be bigger than 210 lbs (like doing Boxing or MMA or something).

Im a road warrior (used to work in 11 states including AK and HI) but have luckily enough only 4 states to cover these dasy - that and conferences about 8 times per year.

I find it extraordinarily hard to be dilligent with work out while on the road - long days usually and restaurat food. The gyms are usually fairly crappy but one has to do the best w it:)
Im elated if I find free-weights!!!
But usually I do the daily basic crunches/pushups/lunges in the room. I also have had a yoga and pilates outine for many years that I know in my head so I at least get that in.
I bring the bands also if I get a chance and a chair works for lats/triceps..
I bring a jump rope as well but dont nessesarily feel ok to use it unless I get a chance to use it during the day when Im less likely to drive some poor sucker below nuts.

I was thinking of buying that door-jam bar thingy and see if I could travel with that - anyone tried that???

Nice workout routine, I like sprints. I am surprised at your body weight though, having seen your pics. I am 6'1", 218-220 and not nearly as cut as you.

Me too, but I am more likely to take it outside to the hotel parking lot and look like some kind of nut
