Swine Flu: Should We Worry?

I'm hearing a lot of panic around me about this new swine flu coming out of Mexico that has killed 107 people down there. Should this be something we need to worry about in this country? Is this a new pandemic that will become global?

sometimes i have some reservations about the media and when it comes pandemic viruses..

the media made a big ado with the bird flu was going to be the next pandemic......

i just hope it doesn't get worse, though...

I actually read the exact opposite of this today in an online US newspaper.

Either way, though, the answer is "no" - don't worry.
The odds are you won't catch it and worry will only cause you stress which will reduce your capacity to fight the virus if you do.

 

It shouldn't concern you anymore than SARS or the Avian flu or whatever disease the media starts hyping next to scare the shit of people.

 

Honestly? Speaking for my country, no.
I don't know how this is being hyped up in America but here it's becoming a joke. Three people that have been on holiday in Mexico that haven't even been diagnosed with the flu yet are already making the news and we're getting hundreds of boxes of this medicine that we just don't need.

I agree with Raocha. I'm sure that bird flu should have killed us all off a couple of years back.

 

I'm not worried.

If there was no cure for it, I'd definitely be concerned.

 

The only time you should really worry about a virus is in instances like "The Stand", when the virus sweeps through entire regions in very little time and people don't have a chance to fight against it. And when was the last time something that severe happened? 1918?

Otherwise, there's enough reporting on it, and enough people are taking precautions and it hasn't killed a large number of people, that it won't turn into pandemic or epidemic proportions....at least it shouldn't.

 

I just read that of the 4 medications available to flu sufferers, this strain isn't very effective against the 2 older medications, but the newer ones seem to be effective against fighting it.

 

So, I guess what we can learn from this is that no-one really know what is going on. (3 different answers in one day, to the same question)

But, I bet Fox and the drug companies are making some coin from it.

This kind of stuff makes me want to become a hermit.

 

First avian 'flu, now swine 'flu, likely rodent 'flu'll be next.

Oh I don't know! I quite enjoy stupid people, where would the endless supply of entertainment come from without them.
