All of them hate you? This may seem an aggressive post but comments like these with absolutely no science behind them and sweeping, unfair generalizations make me cringe.

The sad thing is that it isn't the misspellings and poor punctuation which makes you a dumbass.

Yep, never really understood it myself. It seems to be a western phenomenon. In other less developed countries mixed-raced people tend to be more "recognized", and in some cases also have their own subculture. South Africa is a case in point. They have a distinct group of people called coloreds.
What I do find interesting though is how a lot; if not most biracial (black/white mix) people tend to publicly embrace black culture, more then their white side. In the UK, a lot of the mixed-raced people generally embrace the hip-hop/urban culture..ie. wear hip-hop clothing, listen to rap etc.

I think this may lead some people to think that it is okay to call a mixed-raced person black. Thinking it won’t offend them because they are publicly embracing their black side.

It also sometimes quite difficult to tell if someone is mixed raced, or if they are just a lighted skinned black. When this happens I think most people shy away from asking "race questions”, and just call them black.

I was rolling around the internet and found articles like this...

    http://www.kenanmalik.com/essays/olympics.html

    It's not my personal belief.
I was just sharing the information and trying to rationalize it.

I didn't realize where in English class.

And I've read your other post and now realize why these forums are so dead.

    Congratulations for killing this site.

The problem with these theories is that they all seem to look for a biological explanation for the success of Africans in Olympic running. But that ignores the social factors. I knew a Kenyan marathon runner in college. He told me that in his town, running was a pastime. You'd be hanging out outside, and you'd see someone running and you'd just join them and run too, sometimes to the next town. He said that it was exactly the same as Americans see pickup basketball games or baseball.

That's a big social difference, because although I know some American marathon runners, they see it as a challenge or a workout. I don't know any Americans who see running as fun the way they would soccer or basketball, because it's not something we do "together" much.

I tend to give more value to this theory than the biological one, because I think if it were racial, we would see African Americans win some of these Olympic races occasionally.

What what I see, white men are generally more worried about keeping their jobs and taking care of themselves and their families than any of this... except for those on racist site of course.

This is the second time in a row in this thread that I've responded to BMJ only to see his post disappear.

I agree, there is a social element. But with regards to Kenyans, I would think the environment Kenyans grow up in plays a part in their olympic success. Kenya's geography is quite different to the USA, a lot of the country is at high altitude. So most of the people are biologically used to living at high altitude, where there is less oxygen. This inevitably makes a lot of Kenyans bodies more efficient at processing oxygen than most people. So when it comes to running at normal altitudes, they just outrun most nations. I'm sure this plays a part in their olympic success.Along with training and other things of course.

Training definitely plays a large part... Russians are good at chess, because it's a very popular game... kids play with their parents and grandparents... any talent can be developed when given the opportunity.

That certainly makes sense. My quibble comes in when people try to connect the environmental factors that make one regional group excel in some forms of physical activity to a larger racial group that spans continents.
