I agree. God wouldn't give us the free will if our lives were all predefined. so basically, any situation that is predefined and happens for a reason always gives us the possibility to choose, so we can use our will and wisdom and all the other qualities that we have.

i guess these two opposite statements that she gave to her show the fact that there is a way for everyone that was prescribed, the "right way". but we need to pass the tests that God gives us every single day and make a lot of right choices by using our free will, love and wisdom, to get on that right way.

i mostly agree with what you've said, but i also tend to think that we do have a free will and can use for good and right things, or for bad and wrong ones. because this whole earth life is a kind of a test for our spirits.

I completely agree with your view, and I also have seen coincidences in my life that were too strange to have happened at random. That's why I always "follow my heart," for a lack of a less corny expression, and don't worry so much about the irrationality of my choice. I find that God leads me in the right direction, according to the Proverbs:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will direct your paths.

I am with Sin Mari. No offence but what does an infant child do so bad that karma says she has to get raped and killed? It is BS. Yeah and like Sin Mari said, that would mean a paedo could just say "it wasn't my fault, this is what God had lined up for me" or whatever. Anyway, if your future is already planned out what's the point in school, college or anything because if it's planned out you will get there regardless of what you do. I'd love to blame some outside force for some of my bad decisions but it was my own fault. I'm with Police on the Christianity things too.

Some like to believe in predestination, usually the weaker ones, that can't take the burden of their own actions upon themselves and need to find a higher meaning for their own failures - religious consolation it's meant for this large category, that's one of the reasons why religions (no matter the doctrine) are so useful and popular at the same time.
Usually when predestination begins, the lack of responsibility starts too. If one it's not responsible for his own actions "cause some things in life are just meant to be" then he/she is not guilty " cause nothing he/she can do could change what's already written".
So then, what moral right does society have to punish him/her? Even in the penal code it's said crimes are committed by the ones who are responsible, otherwise there aren't crimes - that's why lunatics can't be brought to justice - they can't respond for their actions. But if one thinks that we all are, more or less, submitted to a superior destiny and that some things we can't possibly change and our actions are "meant to be" then we don't have any moral right to judge anyone and that puts in question our entire society and it's organization.

I saw this thread, but hadn't had time to read it through until now. I find this topic very interesting.

Mainly because I enjoy the banter back and forth about philosophical issues such as this. This is what I used to do in college with a group of friends. LOL.

I enjoyed reading everyone's responses and some of them hit home for me.

I looked up quotes on destiny...here are a few of them:

~ Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice: It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. ~
[IMG] ***********0000ff]William Jennings Bryan

~ Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper. ~
[IMG] ***********0000ff]Albert Einstein

~ We are not creatures of circumstance; we are creators of circumstance. ~
[IMG] ***********0000ff]Benjamin Disraeli

~ Destiny. A tyrant's authority for crime and a fool's excuse for failure. ~
[IMG] ***********0000ff]Ambrose Bierce

And my favorite:

~ One meets his destiny often in the road he takes to avoid it. ~
[IMG] ***********0000ff]French Proverb

Both points of view are represented in these quotes.

For me personally, I think we have and make choices in life and those choices lead us down the path we were meant to be on at that time in your life.

I grew up Catholic, and I don't really practice a religion anymore, but you hear stories about someone who falls out of a 2 story window and dies and another person who falls out of a 10 story window and walks away without a scratch. Or the person who walks away from their car after a horrific accident, and I'm left wondering, is this survival of the fittest at its best? Or is there some greater plan that these people weren't meant to die when they did, that they still have unfinished business?

This is an interesting topic. Maybe there is no "free will" and maybe we are all born with a distinct path and the "choices" we make aren't really choices at all, that it was all predetermined?

Or maybe there is such a thing as free will and no one's destiny is predetermined.

It all depends on what you wish to believe, I guess. The answer is, there is no correct answer. At least I don't think there is....;)

For those who don’t understand what the term “soulmates” means, let me spell it out. If a person is your soulmate, then it means that you are destined to end up with that person no matter what.

This takes us to the true meaning of the word destiny. What destiny really means is that it’s gonna be what it’s gonna be no matter what. If that’s what happened then that is what was supposed to happen, that’s what was destined to happen.

I say this because you do not get a mulligan in life, you do not get a “do-over”, and you can’t travel back in time to change the past. Believe me I’ve tried, but for some reason I can’t find any flux-capacitors at Wal-mart, and I don’t own an 85’ Delorean.

So in closing all I gotta say is that there’s somebody for everybody. And if a person is truly your soulmate, then you will love them no matter what color they are, because you were destined to.

End of story.:smt023

Well, Tony, can you answer this: When will my soulmate find me or when will I find him? :smt081 (When we're destined to?) ;)

Questions about destiny and free will....

For people who believe things are preordained, how do you explain kids with extremely painful diseases? What kind of God would allow suffering from someone so innocent and young?

For those who believe in soul mates, what about all the people who die young? What happens to their "soul mates"? If there is only one predestined person you are supposed to be with and their are murdered by someone exercising free will then their soul mate is destined to be alone forever? Again, what kinda God would make male and female only to allow someone to live unfullfilled?

Books it just wasn't there time. This applies to those during 9/11, it applies to the fools who taunt serious injury and death doing crazy stunts. IMO there's no greater plan or purpose to the lives we live. I would imagine we all want to live well off enough and contribute positively to society...

But, that's what I'm saying....was it not their time because it was pre-ordained? Or was it not their time because they fit into Darwin's survival of the fittest mold?

I honestly don't know what I believe on this topic, but I'm enjoying the discussion nonetheless. :-D
