    King Magazine Calls It Quits

    April 1st, 2009 | Author: Benjamin Chesna
The economy and the rise of the internet have slayed another print media outlet as King magazine announced their final issue will hit newsstand on April 21.

King has been going strong for six years and 50 issues but event its unique content could not hold the magazine afloat with all the financial pressure that led to numerous entertainment mags, including Blender last week, suffer. An unidentified staff member at the magazine explained to Rap Radar that he saw the demise of the mag as imminent.

"I can only imagine how busy Twitter is right now over this. I thought we had at least one more issue in us, but in general, I saw it. It definitely sucks, but what can we do, you know?"

King, which is published by Harris Publications, will feature Joe Budden’s wife Tahiry in their last issue; the last in a long list of women such as Trina and Melyssa Ford.

It is sad that a good mag folds.

That sucks, Hip Hop Connection over here was in print for 20 years and it's stopping due to the economy too. I noticed there were less and less ads in it each issue. Sad.

    GOOD RIDDEN

1 less mag geared towards Black men that has nothing but girls showing their asses 70% of the mag

We need more mags like UPTOWN

Not trivial shit regarding all this new trashy hiphop.....

Too bad about this. But I disagree Malikom. King had various articles on artists, background on video girls and actresses along with the photo spread. I always felt it was the black version of Stuff magazine I used to get back in the day.

Yeah I have to disagree with malikom based on that as well hellspawn72, took the words right out of my mouth. And don't forget FHM and playboy(without the nudity). It was also catering alot to curvacious models like alot of urban magazines do.

And a side note for guys who like those thick curvy whitegirls
LIKE ME!! It showed them love as well, thats where I met my model
crush Joanna Shari, they did a small shout out to her and her website.
    Putting her on.

The problem is that for white men (mainstream) their mags aren't limited to FHM and Playboy. They have various genres of magazines aimed at them. For black guys the semi-skin mags are basically all we have. And that's on us.

By the way I liked King mag. I have purchased at least a dozen issues. But you know I'm not too sad about its cancellation. I saw the people behind the scenes of magazines like King and a couple of other of the semi-skin mags for black men. The majority of the writers, editors and photographers seemed to be white, Asian or Hispanic. One of the mags even had a black female editor. Another had a black female photographer. No offense to those people but why aren't black men getting into these fields more? Are we not branching out at all? Are all the black dudes in the biz trying to get into the hip-hop game exclusively or something?

Oh yeah, they do. It's just $59.95 for 12 issues! I think I read somewhere online that the publishers hiked the price due to the economy.

From what I've been told Ebony and Jet are in trouble too. But those magazines are horrible anyway. If it wasn't for history or tradition I would be applauding their possible cancellations.
