Anyone run or know anyone who participated in marathons or 'Iron Man' competitions? I used to have a roommate who ran cross-country, and participated in local marathons. I remember him showing me a printout of his times at various checkpoints, with his overall in the 26.2 miler around 3:50m. I used to tell him that I would never be able to do that, and he would always give me that coach speech about 'never say never, and you can do whatever you want to do, with time and effort. I thought about doing a 5k walk/run that they usually have annually around here, across the Ben Franklin Bridge.
Killadelphia very wise words from your former roommate especially when you consider Puffy ran and completed the NYC marathon a few years back...
yeah that's odd.. but u never know..puffy may have been a runner before he's always slim and all..not like he was 300 lbs and did a marathon lol
It is not easy for athletes who focus on gaining muscle to run long distances. I like to sprint and build muscle, but every once in a while I'll run long. My wife and I ran a half marathon last Sunday. We were quite slow, but it was a fun thing to do together, it was across the 25 April Bridge in Lisbon. I think a 5K is a good distance to start, and going across the bridge will be fun.
yeah id like to go across the bridge, but like u said, athletes that focus on muscle gaining have it hard... that muscle just burns through energy lol... but ya get to look like a stud while doing so.. so there is a trade-off
I don't have the stamina to run long distance as I, like both POJ and Sir Nose, focus on building muscle when I exercise. My gf likes jogging though
My cardio during the week is always mid-hi intensity and <30 min, but on the weekends I will run or rollerblade for an hour or more with the wifey. I usually see a drop in bodyfat percentage afterwards, so I think it is ok if you don't overdo it.
You will also need to have more ectomorph traits to manage a marathon. The few I've spoken to that participate in such activities will run on the treadmill for two hours as a warm up. Cheers!
yeah cardios good for the excess fat, sho'nuff I notice a definite difference in the ab section when i do run, as opposed to just lifting and sit-ups... sometimes u need that extra burn you get from something aerobic
I get this magazine. I think their website lists a few races and other helpful info: http://www.runnersworld.com/ Also this story is kind of inpiring. A not run at all 280 lb guy to this: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-408--12944-0,00.html#readmore
I jogged/walked (mostly walked) a marathon several years ago. I did it through the Leukemia Society. It's called Team in Training. It's a great program. You raise money for a very worthy cause and they will train you and outline what you need to do every week to run a marathon. I know other charities do the same thing. The information I received was extremely helpful. If you don't want to sign up, I still have the info for you to do training on your own, for anyone who wants a copy. It'll probably be hard to get people to donate right now, but it's worth looking into if it's something you really want to do. It's a great feeling and I was behind a guy in his 70s who was jogging! Hey, if I can jog/walk 26.2 miles, then anyone can! :smt023
Good job Books! That takes some serious intestinal fortitude! I haven't done a marathon but did a sprint triathlon which was such a hoot, a couple 5 Km races and one 10 Km. The last two years I haven't run too much - been focused on other things, but I am a slow and steady runner which allows me to go the distance. My ex was a varsity football player and had huge muscles (O-line: centre). He could sprint like mad but completely crashed at the end of the field, lol. So our runs together didn't last very long. hahaha I was much slower and could go a bit longer. I am a huge fan of the walk:run for the big distances. Runner's World really promotes that as well. Great mag and I like the website too. If you do a race, let us know POJ and post the pics after! It's always so inspirational to see those race pics :smt038
I'm guessing you like them smart too. Most Offensive Linemen I have ever known or played with were pretty good with the books.
Thanks! Yes it did. As they say, never do something the first time on race day. Well, I did. And what I did was decide to walk with some people I had met when I got there (I did the marathon in San Diego). That was a bad mistake. When I was training, we had to do 20 miles one morning. I hit my "wall" at about mile 18 that day. On race day, when I stopped with the ladies (because they had to use the "restroom", I hit my wall at about, oh, mile 8. It was TERRIBLE. I "limped" across that finish line vowing never to do one again. Then a couple of hours later I was all about finding the next one to do! LOL. Though I haven't done one again (that's what happens when you have a child, your life seems to stop). I do plan on doing the Chicago Marathon at some point. Maybe this year!
