I just recently signed up to do local volunteer work and was curious if any of you had done something similar and with what organization?

I've been thinking about working at a local charity shop, at the moment i do 3 days of school and take care of the kids, i thought it would be a nice way to keep my hand in the work area and give a little back, picked up a form for the British Heart Foundation, my Aunt has told me about a few youth volunteer schemes but they tend to be on various days rather than a set day.

What area have you volunteered in Saty?

i did volunteer work in a special needs school helping do the physio routines and stuff with the children, ironic i ended up needing those skills for my wee one

ive also done the litter clear up patrols before it was deemed a health and safety risk to the volunteers and its now done by those on community service

would love to go out to africa with one of the orginisations but it wont happen now

I've volunteered 2 summers for children's summer camps with some church yrs ago.
I've done little things here and there.
Now, since I don't seem to find a job, I'll try to volunteer for some projects with immigrants/refugees, so I will learn making experience and my resume will be better too.
My big plan would be to volunteer in some developing country (in Africa or South America). I've been wanted to do that since I finished high school but with the university and work I didn't have a chance to go. Now I could go but I can't afford to lose my part-time job, so eh, maybe it will remain a dream, who knows.
If I ever find a man I'd love to make that experience with him.
What did you volunteer for, Saty?

p.s. That avatar is weird LOL, but hot :smt036

Thats a bugger that is, they used to when i first moved here have teams of residents parents with kids, allsorts clean up the park but for the last 2years on the Parish newsletter they have not scheduled one, its a shame because it would have loved to do that with my eldest on a Saturday morning, teach him some social responsibility.

16 hours of community service required to graduate. 2 Political hours. Tree planting, campus upkeep, some office work, and setting up a bunch of tables. Forgot the names of the organizations.

Good for you Saty, I think it's so important to give to the community when you can.
I've been volunteering for a number of years and am currently with the Youth Emergency Shelter Society which has programs and shelters for youth at risk (homeless, running from horrible homes, etc...). It's for purely selfish reasons as I feel great knowing I am doing something to help these kids.

What kind of volunteer work are you doing now?

I volunteer at a women's medical clinic that deals with unplanned pregnancies, STD testing and options counseling.

We foster dogs and cats through our local animal shelter and help out there as time allows.

That's great that you do this! Do you find it hard to bring the little ones back to the shelter for adoption? :smt089 << that would be me.

It depends on the age. Tiny puppies and kittens--absolutely! And my boys don't help with their pleading to adopt every foster. lol Older puppies who are chewing, jumping and yipping, not so much.

We did adopt a kitten last year from a mother/nursing litter group we fostered.

One day a week I deliver meals on wheels. I also volunteer at an aviation school aboit 2 days a month. I would like to do it more, but there just isnt time.

I have done quite a bit of volunteering because my mother was really into it. She kinda drilled it into us.

one thing i can say f****k the voluntary work
seems it is harder to work there and help and way more easy to get a job and get paid.
I dont work and many times i thought why not to do so voluntary work this will make me do something be out of the house, and also a way to help ..
but seems the places i looked they wanted more experience then a real work ...
the places i look the work was simple and no experience was needed just helping with little stuff..so i have no idea why they were asking so much and ...this places wanted people at times like 8 to 5 now who will manage to go there if they had a full time work .. :smt012
ok it was few hours a day but still most people work at this hours

    Wow...

Anyway, yeah. I like to volunteer. I work at a charity shop with my mum quite a lot. It's a shop that raises money for dog re-homing. I've done a few fund raising things for different causes and in high school I was a "senior buddy", basically I helped kids with disabilities and self esteem issues. We did arts and crafts and generally was just there as someone to talk to. I also used to hand out leaflets and other material for Animal Aid and I did the same outside KFC with PETA once. I'd like to get more directly involved with other voluntary work though. I always respect people who give up their free time to help others.

People don't do voluntary work to get paid, to be fair.
I've worked in a charity shop before but I want to work with animals or kids in the future. I can't do it at the moment but I will volunteer in the summer :)

I'll be working with HIV/AIDS sufferers, packing and delivering groceries to their homes. Last year I was unemployed for a spell and wanted to work with the homeless, and may try that as well.

i have volunteered at my son's school, coats for colorado, dress for success as well as fundraising...i do not have a volunteer position that requires a weekly commitment from me...i prefer to work on projects start to finish and then move on to the next...i think there are things you can do on a small scale as well for instance i collect hotel travel size shampoo, conditioner, soaps etc (anything a hotel provides) from a group of friends that all travel for work...we all collect it from our trips and then get together once a month and one of us drops it off at a homeless shelter...it has turned into a bit of a game to see who can collect the most stuff...i can be competitive so my last trip to houston for a sales meeting there were 10 of my co-workers staying at the marriott for 3 nights...i came home with a half a suitcase full of extras...
