Hypothetically, if this site had moderators, who do think would make for good choices in terms of fair-minded arbiters?

    My list.

    SarahS
    Bookworm
    Mosk
    Athena
    Dex
    pettyofficer
    Bryant

    Your list?

I think the site is better off without moderators.

i can see that i didn't make your list...that must mean that i am passionate about the issues:smt043how is it that kuntry didn't make your list? if we want this place to be sunshine, fresh flowers, kittens and perfectly manicured lawns then she would be my pick...

I nominate myself. I would be the best moderator. I am so just and awesome. I would keep this place and you all in check. There will be zero fights, zero insults, zero name calling, zero trolls, zero personal attacks, zero BS! I would be fair too. I know I have had my spats with people, but I wouldn't be vindictive or anything like that. I don't think I'm that petty when it actually comes down to it. I wouldn't abuse my power. I do have a lot of favorites, but I've been on the bad side of favoritism and would not be willing to treat any one else that way. Plus, I'm here all the time, for now, heh. :smt106
I'm about to become a moderator in another forum I post in though.

I didn't include everyone I thought would be a good moderator, and its more a reflection of who I think is the most even-tempered on the forum. We would also need people in widely different time zones to monitor for when others are asleep.

Nah, i don't think we need moderators to be honest, plus i think that moderators should really be people that don't post, i would personally go off talking to them as you'd end up being scared to make a remark that might be interpreted as offensive to them.

Plus it would probably put people off posting, i like the fact people can be free to post there views in anyway they see fit, even the ones i think are rubbish, it all makes for an interesting mix, its a forum not a Creche. :)

Hey, how did this become a Sticky? That's cool!

I do think this site can benefit from having moderators. Now, of course, they'd have to be fair-minded people who can keep their heads in bad situations.....

I'll add more as I think of them, but besides me :smt081, I think:

    ChosenOne
    IntriguedOne

They both have exhibited the ability to keep their heads and calm the storms of certain threads over the course of my time on here....

This forum had 3 mods on here for a few days back in June - people posted no problem. It kept the trolls away, that's about it.

As long as the people chosen are fair and have exhibited level-headed behavior, I don't see the issue with it. It shouldn't hinder anyone's ability to say what they feel. It's more to keep the trolls in check and to keep people from flaming others in the webbie's absence.

Why only a few days then? do you know?

Trouble is though, with trolls they are usually completely obvious so they end up getting deleted anyway.

But i remember being called a troll on here when i first posted, sometimes people think your being a troll when all you are doing is passing on personal exsperience.

Sometimes flaming happens, but just lately i haven't noticed anything big go down, it has its moods this site, sometimes people fight, sometimes they don't, its all part of it i think.
If people dont like something, just use report post. ;)

Because Webbie was going to be out of town for a few days and out of touch with the site for a trip.

Oh, yeah, the Report Post option would still be in use and can be handled by the Webbie or a mod (if this site had them)...basically whomever gets to it first. ;)

Having more than one person moderate the site has the added benefit of quicker response times for posts and members that have been reported.

phock moderators who needs them? I've seen how they can ruin a message board with their power trip. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT !!!!

everybody is moderator here when you see someone breaking the rules use the report button.

    LOL!! Thank you, Lipstick!

People thought I was a troll, as well. I agree. I don't think we need moderators. Those people who post crap usually breeze in and out.

:smt043LMAO!! That's sweet of you, but you've apparently missed some of my posts over time. I may have refereed some threads, but I've breathed fire on others. I'm level-headed for a moment, but my temper isn't the best.

However, I think Chosen & DD-Dub (Book) are excellent picks. Also, I think Athena and Kuntry would display great diplomacy.

On sites with mods you have a big-brother effect which is annoying. Plus you all the time have people stumping to be selected as mods, which gets old quick. Then others get offended that they weren't selected over another, unfair/inconsistent criteria, etc, etc. You begin to see resentment towards the mods themselves.

    Better off without them IMO.

Some members probably feel the big brother effect from me.

However, there can be different types of moderators or various levels of moderators. For example, chat moderators who have the ability to ban people from chat but are powerless outside of the chat room. Or we can simply instruct moderators to only deal with members who have been registered less than 30 days (90% of the trolls) - or members who have negative reputation points.

There are also various systems and tools they could have access to - or not have access to. Like the infraction system, the reputation system, or being able to see more of what goes on behind the scenes.

I've been leaning towards having 3 or 4 moderators. They would see all reported posts but would primarily deal with blatant trolls and spammers - and avoid the internal conflicts or arguments. But also be ready to handle more power in a crisis situation without freaking out.

I hear you WM, but while I have your ear, I think private messages would solve a lot of the problems. That way two folks who have a dispute can take it offline, and avoid the showdowns which drive the emotions up.

Banning people with neg rep alone could lead to dogpiling by a group of pals who had it in for a particular member in an attempt to get him/her banned.

Oh, and you are non-intrusive and no BB effect has been detected, at least not by me.

Private messaging of some sort will probably come to long term members or members in good standing based on some criteria, but I don't think it would resolve disputes. It usually makes them worse, because it allows a back channel of conversation that others cannot see. If they are moderated then moderators would be able to view all private messages. Not just who hates who, but who loves who too.

Also, no one would get banned because they have negative reputation. Some people are already there. In fact, some prefer it - rebels I guess. What I meant was that moderators would be allowed to moderate their posts (people with neg rep) if needed.

None of this is a done deal yet. That's why it's being discussed. I usually side with your point of view when visiting other forums though.
