Anyone else see this documentary on HBO? It records the unbridled hatred and racism spewed forth from all parts of the country during the presidential race last year. While I am never shocked at the level of stupidity of some segments of our society, it surely shows that we as a country still have a long way to go in terms of equality and putting to rest stereotypes and prejudice.
Haven't seen it. Sounds interesting. But instead of dwelling on the dumb rednecks, maybe we should now celebrate the fact that not only do we have a black President, he got there with a clear mandate. This could not have been accomplished without the help of good, intelligent whites of conscience.
Very good and true point, I just found the sheer level of vitriol to be fascinating on some level. Also, it was not just the dumb rednecks, although they are certainly well represented, it was the so called "normal" looking and sounding white people who were just as, if not more vicious in there political and racial attacks.
I don't have HBO, but I am not surprised. There are areas of this country in which people never accepted the results of the Civil War or the results of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Unfortunately there are still ignoramuses out there who want to pretend that black people and white people are separate species. With a massive change in the demographics of this country, and with children growing up in an America which is becoming more tolerant and accepting, I believe that our country is slowly beginning to live out its promise to be a nation of "liberty and justice for all."
I'm just as afraid of the far left as I am of the far right. The loonies on both sides will or could destroy this country.
I wish somebody would give me an example of the Left being "loony." Last time I checked, people who bombed abortion clinics, shot abortion doctors, get paid millions for hate speech or blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City were all conservatives. People called Gore "loony" because he believed in global warming, and it turned out he was right.

Maybe you can tell me a country that is completely and racially tolerant? The United States is SUCH a terrible place.
Of course there is no place that has eliminated all forms of "ism's". And of course the U.S. has many wonderful attributes, and is a great place to live. Are you saying that people should not work to educate others on the problems that still exist here? That is what I believe the director was trying to do with this documentary. Like she said in the interview Satyricon posted, she was simply holding up a mirror to the McCain/Palin supporters.
KC,they would mention small examples from the 1960's like the Black Panthers,The Weather Underground, and other radical groups who were destroyed by J. Edgar Hoover's COTELPRO and other government entities. Also, the small story of radicals living in Cuba who are retired. The "loons" mentioned by O'Reilly and ilk are mostly themselves.
No one should be surprised by that documentary. There is a reason why it took this long in America to even have an African American president. I mean as much as people look down on Bush could you imagine if Bush was black. The racial retoric would be off the scale against black people. Some people are more tolerant than others but make no mistake racism and all its ugly sides and negative potential is still alive and well in the hearts of many people worldwide, not just in the United States. I'm sure some of you guys must have ran into problems because we are engaged in interracial relationships. I don't care if someone dates in or outside their race but some people act as if interracial dating is an act of war. This film and others like it is good because it shows these fools for who they really are - ignorant and isolated. The issue of concern is that people like this (and all their hate filled views) still exist and that is trully sad.
At the very end of that interview it looked like Pelosi and Maddow had a little moment there.
You said it best, my friend. But thankfully, a clear majority of Americans are willing to turn the pages on such ugliness. Btw, Alexandra Pelosi is pretty easy on the eye. Just thought I would th'ow that in there.
When it comes to race, the right is always myopic. They supported Jim Crow in the 50's and Apartheid in the 70's and 80's.
