if you can't even pm them? isn't there a option to just allow people you have added as friends acceptability to pm you?

    Is this possible?

I wish that we could write at least to our friends. Some of them didn't put their messenger online so that everybody can have it, but that doesn't mean that they would mind if somebody wrote them a note...

PMs may be available soon to higher tier members (and paid members) but it certainly will not be an across the board option. I don't think it can be restricted to friends only. Blog posts (if enabled) can be restricted to friends.

See this thread for more details:

I'll have to look at that after the new dating software is installed. Because that software comes with some of the same features and it may be better than the one in the forums -- and more controllable.

    Do you use any plugins?

I've used the rep feature as a way to PM a few times. You can only do it once though for a long time. I guess, even though we can't PM, a point to adding friends might be to see who here you are cool with. But then, I got some friends that I've never talked to or shared any opinions with as well. But oh well, heh. Hmm.

Yes, I've seen a couple folks do that. But everyone should be aware that those messages are technically not private (like private messages).

    Because you can read them?

I can view them, but no. It's because there could come a time where moderators could. Right now that is not the case, but rep comments would not get the same protection as true private messages. Because they are not. Technically they're to be used to comment on the substance of the post the +/- points were given to.

Ooh, well, that's okay, they weren't "private private", and I'm sure I'm commenting on the substance of the post too. Kill two birds with one stone. ;)

What would be the difference if someone paid or not? Wouldn't they still get hate messages and the women complaining about being bombarded with PMs, how would paying stop that? I don't understand. May we have a PM trial period and see how it goes (with the people we have here now)? Then if it doesn't work out or it causes problems, just disable it again? I really want PMs. Pweeease... :smt087 <-puppy face. ;)

I like PM's on other forums I'm on.

They stop threads becoming a coversation between 2 people and keep them on track. I've been known to high jack a thread or two, it would stop that. I don't think men would bombard women with messages, and if they did just block them or ignore them.

It's also good for sharing IM contact details and pictures if you're a private person and don't want every member to see.

I am still pondering how I am going to do this but here is what I am leaning towards.

Creating a new "VIP" group in the forum that has PM and other privileges. Their status would be above registered members but below paid members.

Who is included in this group will be determined by a number of factors; like the number of posts they submit, the quality of their posts, reputation points, how often they visit the site ... things of that nature.

You should see these changes taking place over the next few months.

The big holdup (since November) is that they're still working out the bugs in the latest version of this forum software. It wasn't a major deal to wait because some vendors, like the makers of the arcade and some moderator tools we use, also need to get their stuff working and bug free with the latest forum software.

The makers of vbulletin added a content management systems (CMS) that makes it possible to control and update the home page easily. But they're having all sorts of issues with it. I recently purchased a copy of their latest version 4.02 and I'm installing it on the test server. My biggest worry is losing search engine ranking if the CMS isn't search engine friendly.

The biggest board I've seen go live with it is -- http://forums.digitalpoint.com/

This site is using the CMS to control the home page -- http://thedroidblog.com/index.php

Also many of the VIP group's privileges will be affected by the new personals software, which I've already purchased as well. The hard part is getting the different databases to work together.
