A pet peeve of mine...

I guess I'm somewhat of a spelling nazi. Spelling and grammar with concern to the English language come very naturally to me.

But I have to say, there's something that irks me about the internet. More specifically, about social forums and chat rooms on the internet.

First off, let me point out, I understand that not everyone speaks English as their first language. That's fine. Also not everyone is as good with it as I am, even if it -is- their first language. Or only!

But seriously, people, if you're talking about women then talk about women. But if you're talking about a woman then talk about a woman! Don't talk about a women! That's incorrect!

It seems those two words get confused so often, yet I've never seen anyone mistakenly put "man" for "men" yet.

    Also their, there, and they're.

Their - something someone owns. "Is that their shirt?"
There - a place. "Let's go over there!"
    They're - THEY ARE. "They're coming at 12, right?"

    All together now!

"Yeah, they told me they're going to take their dog to the vet at the office over there."

    Or then and than.

Then - later. "Sure, let's do it then, instead."
Than - comparison. "Do you have more beer than I do?"

"I'd like to go out then, instead, because it's a better time than 6pm for me."

It just gets on my nerves so bad. I can totally understand if someone is struggling with the language, but I see so many AMERICANS who've spoken English their (their! Not there! Or they're!!!!) entire lives screw these simple words up constantly. An online friend of mine, despite being corrected by many people for years now, never uses the word "then". It's always "than", regardless of which form of the word is supposed to be used.

    Ugh!!!

Come on, Bookworm, I know it gets on your nerves, too! Back me up, girl! :D

If, presumably, two decades of K-12 education didn't make it stick, then one Internet post certainly won't.

I always mix up then and than *ashamed*.
I know I do a lot of spelling misstakes (to and too seems to be another of those constant for people by the way) and therefore isn't really allowed to complain.. But eh, it does bug the shyte out of me too.

There is only one thing that bugs me more:
Lack of use of punctuation, commas and alike.
I know it's problematic for us that comes from non-english speaking cultures, since the usage of for example commas is very different in english vs other languages. But it's not that hard. It's not impossible.
Some people seem to throw in stuff at complete random! Oh, and don't get me started on semicolons. I know they are hard to handle, and if you don't know how to use them just please, dear god, don't.

Addendum: my pet peeve is people who don't wash their hands before leaving the bathroom. This is less forgivable than poor grammar, because basic sanitation involves nothing more than soap, hot water and a paper towel.

Don't be ashamed, doll, I specifically said I understand when people speak English as a second language.

I'm talking about the homegrown idiots that are polluting my American gene pool. I kill more braincells smoking weed everyday than some of these retards ever had.

I've never understood how people can do that. It's so gross!

Maybe they all just don't have the great smelling hand soap that I do. It's so lovely, it makes even the stinkiest of people want to wash their hands!

Well, sorry, but the only Brits I cut slack on are the Welsh!

    :D

I don't hate people who can't type good English, it just bugs me when I read it, because my little internal voice for people gets distorted if the grammar is thoroughly screwed.

So instead of "hearing" this when I read bad English:

(Yes, it's about a bad word, but the narrator speaks lovely English!)

    I hear this:

Oh God, don't even get me started on that one!! I see that all the time. I find that disgusting. Like it takes 10 minutes to wash your hands!

LMAO!! Yes, I will most definitely back you up on this one!! I try so hard not to let it bother me, but it does.

So, I do my best to continue on and not think about it.

OMG! I just thought of another word that bothers me to no end: conversate. It's converse!

Okay, must stop posting on this topic now. I'm running the risk of going on and on and on....

The Posting Etiquette: by The Language Czar SonnyShao

All posts must be grammatically correct, or you will face the wrath of disposableheroine.

For the comprehension of the Caucasian poster, slang and Ebonics must be kept to a minimum.

No N-bombs allowed. If this rule is broken see the penalty in Rule #1.

All sentences should end in proper punctuation marks. No periods at the end of questions, no rampant use of exclamation points, etc.

The term "Snow Bunny" can only be referred to actual rabbits in the snow.

Smilies as posts will not be tolerated. Sentences of 3 words and more with a smiley on the end will be accepted. If this rule is broken your computer will be hacked into, and you checking accounted will be depleted.

Any post made by the member known as Dossou, must be responded to in a positive fashion. The man is a poet, an eclectic genius in the field of Literature.

If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie.
(I'm running out of ideas people...)

Profanity must be kept down to a minimum. This means you SERENDIPITY!

If insecure about spelling, please google before posting. If insecure about claimed facts in post, please go to wikipedia. If insecure about wikipedia, go to university library and check sources of said wikipedia.
If insecure if what you say is at all a fact, go hide in the corner.
If insecure what a fact is, please go back to kindergarden and try again.
