i read mostly essays and fantasy. fantasy is my drug. i was going to create a thread about that. later. after i reucperate the 12873 hrs of sleep i lost this month :)

I write sometimes too,I started like 3 books but never went past the 1st chapter, lol.

About poetry: I love Pablu Neruda :smt049, Evgenij Evtušenko, some Gabriele D'Annunzio, Trilussa, Giuseppe Ungaretti. The last 3 r very important italian poets. here's a poem from Neruda:

    Lost in the forest...

Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.

Something from far off it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.

Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind

as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood---
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.

    lol..
the only fantasy I read is terry pratchett, i feel excused since its parody.. Otherwhise I'm way to uptight with my reading to allow fantazy however good it is.

I just finished A War Undone: The Story of the Great War (WWI) by G.J. Meyer. It's a good read. It tells you all about the insanity and irrationality of the war. I'm now on 1812: War with America by John Latimer. It's about the War of 1812 from a British perspective. I like it so far.

I don't really read fiction. I like non-fiction the best. I guess that's the student in me :p

I'd love for you and other readers here to give us a primer or little seminar on what you learn from the books. (Maybe cause I'm too lazy to read all of them but they hold interest for me, lol).

    Cheers :D

I am currently reading The Abstinence Teacher, by Tom Perrotta. He also wrote Little Children and Election, which were both made into movies. He has an incredible grasp on the mundane details of surburban life but gives them a twist in each of his novels.

It's actually a song of sorts. I've got music I "sing" it to, though I half sing, half speak throughout depending on the parts I'm saying at the time. The one you pointed out is spoken. It's kinda weird. I'll record it eventually!

And when I get time I will definitely read your story. Got a lot to do tonight!

I just finished The Friendship Factor by Alan Loy McGinnis for the second time.
Now I am reading How to Win Friends and Influence People for the third time.
And I have been listening to the Audio Book of The Shack by William P Young.

My all time favorite author is C. S. Lewis. (I'm still stuck in my childhood.)

I read poetry but don't have a favorite type or author, I love the more abstract that makes a person really think. Happy has had some good quotes lately.

How do you read? I don't know what your are getting at, but I try to read books that I can apply to my life, so if that's what you're asking then I do try to do that, if I feel it is wise, if I start a book and then get into it and find I fundamentally disagree with the content, I'll stop reading the book.

Litterature is like all art contextual, when reading something that is apart from your everyday context, how do you work with that?
    (What?)

Do you write yourself? If, what genre and have you published anything?

Yes I do write and have self published a short story, it has been sent out to about 500 people but I have never written to be published, I do so to express what I need to say, and sometimes to put my own thoughts in order. I journal a lot, and I write poetry some. I prefer short stories, that are about things I am passionate about.

    any quotes?
I have many favorite quotes, here's a good one.
"The first duty of Love is to listen." Paul Tillich

This is for shits and giggles, right?

Nice Tillich quote, he was a Christian existentialist like Kierkegaard; I am one of the atheist variety.

Well im keen on a lot of girly classics as you call them,

Thomas Hardy is a fav, Mayor of Casterbridge, Far from the Madding Crowd,
Tess of the d' Ubervilles only read one D.H Lawrence The Rainbow which was considered hot fiction in its day lol
Pride and Prejudice (just re read that)
Probably tons im forgetting read so much fiction its despicable :D

The Last ive just finished is The Last Gospel by David Gibbins, one before that, The Testament of Gideon Mack by James Robertson.

I have to say my Favourites Authors as in current is Stephen King (reminder to self pick up his new one, only upto Duma Key now)
James Herbert all everything, bar a couple ive read:smt045

Depressive moods call for Harry Potter, light reading with lots of smiles.

Poetry i know nothing about, sadly:( a poet does not live inside me at all wish it did.

I love to read it takes me to places and viewpoints, ive never seen, i at least do a book every 10 days or so, but fiction, fact is just for school time for me unless its history or paranormal, pretty keen on 2nd world war stuff, and have a pretty rare book paranormal book from the 40s Poltergeist over England by Harry Price a treasured item :D

I love books, especially books for fun!!!

I started The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand about 2 weeks ago. So far I like it. It's the first book I've read for myself in many years!
I loved Mary Higgins Clark when I was in jr high and high school, I read all her books! Currently I don't have a fav author...but a book that I read in college has stayed with me, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. My all time favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird...I've read that book so many times!

I haven't seriously read poetry since high school, but this last semester I took Latin poetry and we did Ovid (hardest class ever!) once I got past figuring out word order and verb tense the poems were good, all about Roman/Greek mythology. Orpheus and Eurydice, so sad.

I don't really write much...my freshman year I wrote a manifesto for my expo writing course and it was published in a university publication, nothing big or fancy. I wrote poetry in high school and won a few writing contests, but I don't think I'd want any of my writing published.

No quotes I can pull off the top of my head at the moment.

No actually, it's true, I have a hard head, I need to read books like this about once a year, and I only read it the first time a couple of years ago. So Yeah, some of the clasics I'll read over and over, till I get it.

Glad you like my quote. I have a peom I may post later, in the religious section.

    The light weight questions:

I'm currently reading "My Very Own Murder" by Josephine Carr. I also enjoy reading the bible. I don't have a favorite author. I tend to read books based on subject matter as opposed to its author. I don't read poetry though I've written a few poems in the distant past.

    The heavy artillery:

When the book is one I'm enjoying, I read up to 70 pages per hour. My reading is done usually in a place of either complete silence or in a location with a lot of cacophony. But I have little trouble reading when my little one is asking a question between every other sentence. It's not something that causes any frustration. The literature that I select is usually not something that is part of my every day context. Therefore, I absorb the words from the perspective of the central character. Once I've finished reading a book, I'll discuss it with someone who read the same book or I'll read the book again a number of years later.

I've tried writing (nothing significant in my opinion) but it's not a talent of mine.

I have no quotes to share. I think anything that I'd quote could and probably would be taken out of context.

Ditto on enjoying the Bible, so do I, and quotes are often taken out of context.

"IBrain": Surviving the Technological Alterations of the Modern Mind, by Gary Small, M.D.

You all have a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to come.

word thats sick, you do strike me as a profound individual

And yes, i do perform. My stage performance involves a series of racial rhymes, accompanied by beats of african drums. Basically, i get on stage with an african drum, and thump thump ,then flow .....thump thump, then flow etc. Haha, we had fun during the summer, one of my homies does the same thing, so he brought his guitar, and me the drum, and we killed it for real.

However nothing recently (no inspiration), and unfortunately all my shit is on VHS tapes, and im still hooking up to buy a converter or some such.

    later

oh btw, this is very similar to the shit i do . (Mine is a lil more inclined towards Africa(slavery ,racism etc))

Just a poem I found on line.

The first thing you must understand
There is no easy way to love a black man.
You've got to take time to figure him out,
And study and digest what he's really about
Knowing he's someone you can't live without.

    Then pour on the kindness
    Shower him with sweetness,
Never letting him take your kindness for weakness.
For he's desires strength with a touch of gentleness

He has a tough time giving his all to you,
So be appreciative of the little things he tries to do.
Let him know he can trust and confide in you,
And in return he won't have to hide things from you.
So be his supporting rock, be his friend not his foe,
When he falls don't be so quick to say I told you so

    Be understanding, not demanding.
Let him unwind, he faces a world of rain,
So try to be his ray of sunshine.

Don't get too cozy in the comfort zone.
You'll might take it all for granted and end up alone.

Keep love new, exciting and just a little bit wild.
    It doesn't hurt to go that extra mile;
Finding new ways to make him smile.

    Keep it sexy but devout.
    Because without a doubt
He wants to be proud when he takes you out.

Don't forget about you, never let yourself go
Love yourself, and he will love you too

Don't smother him please, just let him breathe.
The tighter you hold on, the faster he will leave.

And when you love him, love him all the way down,
Don't be afraid to explore him pound for pound.

If you don't keep it a constant thrill,
Please believe me the next chick will.

Be patient, keep it real and demand respect.
And a wonderful black king is what you will get.

    Show him your pride
    Stand by his side.
    Let God be your guide
    And love will abide

This was something I found on line and enjoyed, I thought some of you might too.
