I agree about Rihanna and hip hop stars in movies.

Boyz N The Hood is one of my favourite movies, I don't think people can diss Ice Cube there. One of my favourite actors next to Spacey an Noton is Mos Def. I mean, anyone who's seen him in movies must be stupid to descredit his acting abillities. More recently I really like Andre 3000 from Outkast... oh and we can't forget Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg (lol "Marky Mark") were both musicians and are now respected actors. Yeah, okay, some rappers suck but you can't diss them all. Hey, Puffy was good in Monsters Ball too!

 

NOble, you missed the point,the people who "can get the job done" are real black actors, you can try and import rappers to play cliched parts cos they are "being real", but I tell you what? look what happens when they get real black actors to play those gritty roles (denzel in training day,Idris elba in the wire, terence howard in Hustle and Flow) you get a gripping perfomance and plenty of depth to the characters. So if your talking about getting the job done it just makes sense to get an actor to do acting.

The reason why Hollywood use rappers is because they want to attract the black audience and these rappers very cleverly position themselves in hollywood as representive of black people.

So when Hollywood want to attract the black audience in a film they think that if they put a rapper in the film that the rapper will bring the black audience.

It is clearly not the case as a lot of us who did go to see those films initially, got burned and are tired of seeing rappers bring down the quality or be confined to really cliched cliches because of their "gangsta Rep", so now we want to see more laurence fishbournes and don Cheadles than DMX or Snoop Dogg.

I would much rather see a big box office feature with a relatively unknown black actor than a rapper. In many cases unless its a comedy, using a rapper instantly kills credibility.


With Regards to "Ri-Ri" and chris brown- you should also know that the only reason that "relationship" exists is because the mainstream media got hold of a story that supposedly when she was in London, a black male model went up to her and asked her for an autograph and she replied
"who the fuck are you looking at you black bastard"

apparently there was some water thrown over her face after that and some pushing and shoving with the body guard.
once news of this encounter hit the main media outlets, within a week a relationship with chris brown was leaked, how convenient.

This girl has zero talent, her voice is fucking horrible. There is no reason why this girl should be famous at all.
I have a genuine dislike for this girl, any black man who doesnt is a fool.

 

Why give her props for seeing a bm? IR should be promoted/tolerated on all sides for full acceptance.

It's funny that you mentioned those particular roles because the two of them that were Oscar nominations with one Oscar win came under heavy criticism by part of that very same audience that I believe HOLLYWEIRD was trying to draw in; NAMELY BLACK FOLKS! And if I'm not mistaken all three were successful to a certain extent and all three had members of the hip hop community in them.

And to psnowbird, my comments about Ri Ri were in response to the original post concerning her & even if I'm proping up her dating a bro then what is wrong with that if he's a positive black male?!

 

To be frank, i believe Rihanna is using Breezy as a cover up. If y'all remember, she started dating him when the black blogs went up in arms when she said that stuff about all the dudes she found hot being white. Just give ol' girl some time, she will dip. I ain't mad at her, but she should just "come out" because she ain't foolin nobody.

You know damn well if Chris Brown or Ne-Yo were smooching blonde girls in their videos and then came out and said all the hot girls they've been seeing are all white, their careers will be in the sewer.

About the issue of rappers taking roles that deserve to go to black actors, i'm afraid i have to take the side of those against it. Its hard enough for black actors to catch a break, and in the super-competitive world of Hollywood, getting a script is very difficult, even for white actors. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and be very lucky. Many of these rappers already got they pocket straight, so why are they shortening other brotha's ratio.

C'mon y'all!!!

It's a lot more complicated than that but that's as easy as it can be explained.

 

Rihanna can't sing, pure and simple.

I would like to go back and comment about Ice Cube if I may. It's beyond me to why he hasn't been heavily criticized for all the crap he said, even now, which has made hip-hop what it is now compared to what it used to be. He should not be commended nor respected nor even respected, not even for the Boyz N the Hood movie he appeared in. The same goes for Ice T, known more for saying all that derogatory crap about law enforcement. Both of these thugs continue to get movie and TV roles in which they sure as hell don't deserve to get. Both are awful actors. This is one of the reasons why I feel acting has been simply not as good as it used to be. All these music stars (and I'll include pop and country stars also) get these movie roles, while true actors who have been in the business for a long time continue to get snubbed and simply overlooked.

I like movies about the old time music business like "Ray," "Dreamgirls," etc. so I'll be seeing this one, probably on DVD. Personally I think it's a triumph when we get a period black movie with real black historical figures that doesn't have shit to do with hip-hop/rap etc. That a key figure in the film is white/Jewish is an old gambit they use to make the film "relatable." As we move into the Obama era, there will be a change in this kind of format however.

Looking forward to the Biggie movie as well as Cheadle's Miles flick if he can pull together the money to make it.

 

Don't know if change is coming on this front. The media is spinning that bullshit but the TV shows are getting whiter (or at least ahve less black participation) and the films on the horizon for black men this next year is pretty pathetic, from what I can tell the worst I've seen this decade.

Despite my appreciation for Anthony Mackie (who gets stuck in crappy films) and Derek Luke (who gets stuck in slightly less crappy films) I have absolutely zero interest in this flick. And as for that Cheadle-Miles Davis flick keep waiting. As you know they've been talking about it for years and years and it never gets past the planning stages. Hell, there isn't even a script for it as far as I know.

 

I just saw it a week ago, and I loved it. If you did not get this film then oh well.

 

You'd think I wouldn't either, but I actually liked Biggie and hate the overblown Tupac/thuglife worship. I'd pay to see it just to spite all the Tupac ass-kissers. Brooklyn stand up.
