Black people and the police

Okay, now we all know there is a history of mistrust between black people and police forces in the western world. A significant proportion of black people don’t trust police for several reasons. In relation to the UK, could one of these reasons be the low representation of black officers in police forces? Would black people trust the police more if they saw more black faces in the police forces? Would this help get rid of this ‘no snitching’ mentality prevalent amongst many black people.’ No snitching’ mentality being not reporting crimes, or being a witness to a crime, because you don’t trust the police. Now in the UK, there has been this debate about having affirmative action in the police force. The idea being that if you have a police force representative of the population it is policing, you getting greater cooperation with that local population. For example if say Liverpool had 3% black population, 5% Asian population. An equal proportion would be expected in the police force. If a white male and black male went for exactly the same job in the police force the black male would get the job to ensure quota’s were met. How helpful do you think this is?

Dont think so,because often times those Black cops are worse than the white ones. There are ALOT of uncle tom black police officers, dont really know why.Maybe they are trying to prove something to the white ones by showing aggression towards Blacks or something.

This my point in another thread. The black cops are always harder on you than the white cops.

I can't really say anything about the UK, but in america, the whole stop snitching thing is never gonna go away, unfortunately.

Then you will have the white guy saying he's being discriminated against. We've had affirmative action here in the states in a lot of areas for a very long time, and I personally don't think it has helped to stop discrimination or to make people trust the hiring agency any more, whether governmental or corporate.

There are other threads about it. I do think it may have been needed when it was implemented but I don't think it has done what it was intended to do, and I don't think it helps now.

The so-called "no snitching mentally" is a ubiquitous phenomenon in insular minority communities that are not well integrated in the mainstream of any society. It's in no way unique to blacks in Western countries.

Personally, I never had any antipathy towards law enforcement when I was younger, but then again, I was pretty sheltered and naive up until my late teens. After an incident in college where I was ostensibly pulled over for DWBINV and ended up face down on the hood of my truck with a gun pointed at my head, I started to have some issues with the police. I imagine that people who have been hassled repeatedly have even stronger feelings about it than I do.

Diversity in law enforcement may or may not positively affect their relations with the minority communities that they patrol. Who knows. I probably would not hesitate to report a crime, but I generally do my best to keep my distance from the police.

    True..

The reason I put so much emphasis on the ' no snitching mentallity' in the black community is because a lot of black folk tend to feel police target them unfairly. This happens, but I think its a kind of difficult for police if no one is willing to give evidence. How do they solve the crime? Do they conduct investigations based on hearsay...and then get accussed of harrasing people? or do they not do anything? And then get accussed of not caring for black people.Yes while other communities have this 'no snitching mentallity',its seems to me that it is glorified in certain aspects of western black culture (eg. some rappers).

Nah but for real, I commit no crimes, and if a crime was committed against me I wouldn't go to the cops. I have no reason to talk or communicate with them.

You would have a reason to talk to them if someone shot though, wouldnt you?

the "no snitching mentally" is unproductive and backwards. It hurts the community. More crime and more victoms result of it.
