Girl, 14, raped by schoolboy gang

Nine schoolboys have been convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl.

The gang snatched her from the street and took her to a stairwell in a block of flats in Hackney, east London, in April last year, a court heard.

She was told she should be raped for insulting their leader's girlfriend, and they laughed as they took turns.

Six boys were found guilty of rape, kidnap and false imprisonment. Three others admitted the same charges. All will be sentenced on Monday.

Legal anonymity was lifted by Snaresbrook Crown Court on seven of the nine.

    Plight ignored

O'Neil Denton, 16, Weiled Ibraham, 17, and Yusuf Raymond, 16, admitted the offences.

The others before the court - Jayden Ryan, 16, Alexander Vanderpuije, 15, Jack Bartle, 16, Cleon Brown, 15, and two aged 14 and 16 who still cannot be named - were convicted by a jury of the same charges.

Nicola Merrick, prosecuting, said the girl's ordeal began when some of her attackers - aged as young as 13 at the time - snatched her from the street.

She said although she was "too afraid" to call for help, her obvious plight was ignored by passers-by.

Ms Merrick said other boys were phoned to join in and they were laughing and shouting encouragement to each other as the girl was raped.

The victim was so traumatised she later attempted suicide, the prosecution said.

Applying for anonymity orders to be lifted, Miss Merrick said it was "in the public interest" that the defendants should be named.

"Those young people who become members of gangs, should know the outcome of this trial, that they will not mete out punishments as a gang with impunity and not ultimately retain their anonymity."

DAMN! That's disgusting, and some of the guys were only 13 as well. Crazy. Poor girl.

Is it common in England to "lift anonymity" and give out names of minors? Or is this a very rare case that may set some kind of precedent?

Just curious, here it's against the law to give out names of minors who are criminals, but if you are an adult, and only accused (not even convicted) you may find your name and home address printed in the local newspaper.

It's really uncommon, everyone is granted anonymity over here. Jamie Bulger's killers were granted anonymity for life (2 ten year old boys who abducted and tortured a toddler, then threw his body on a rail way track) and have been given a home, new name, job etc. Same with Mary Bell (killed 2 toddlers when she was young) and her daughter. Many killers and rapists, underage or adults are granted anonymity, it's annoying. However, depending on the circumstances I don't know if it's right to release minors names, I guess in this case it's in the public interest to protect citizens against rapists or something. I thought it was bizarre that their names were released personally, perhaps it's because of the severity of the crime.

Only really been to London a few times, and never Hackney, I'd be scared (lol). From what I've read it isn't the nicest area. Lots of youth murders etc... Oh god, what was the worst place in the UK?
I know, I feel awful for her, and she attempted suicide as well. Hope she recovers, I don't know if you can ever emotionally recover from rape but I hope she's okay.

As a father myself of a beautiful 14 y/o daughter, I can't help but to be outraged. I hope these young fools get serious prison time, and receive exactly what they gave out to that little girl. Chances are, they will.

shouldn't crime be low in England since you have a gun ban or is it the opposite? London seems very safe to me when i was there. I saw alot closed circuit cameras all over the streets watching me.

In my work, I deal with things like security systems for crime prevention, etc...and building design. I can tell you that closed circuit cameras are only useful in solving crimes. They may have a very tiny impact in reducing some crime, but mostly they actually do more harm than good...

Essentially, because the cameras are there, people think it's safe - ie, it gives a false sense of security. But, they can't stop a crime and the person watching the camera (assuming there is such a person) is usually too far away to be super effective in stopping quick crimes (muggin, assault, etc).

I'm not saying they're useless, just that they're not really effective.

And, to respond to the original post - what sort of environment allows kids to become like this. I am NOT saying that they're not responsible for their own terrible actions, but as 13, 14, 15 years old - these boys are partially a product of their environment. It's sometimes hard not to become very sad at the world when you hear stories like this.

Ofcourse the girl knew what that section of the building represented, and she knew the outcome, and she had a choice to either come or say no......but she kept a smile on her face..

We got there and she got on her knees; we took turns ,one by one as she serviced us. Then one of my boys got caught up in the moment and wanted a lil more. She didnt find him attractive so she refused. He was an aggressive guy so he did what he does best and well,,you can tell the ending.,

The next day, my boy got called down to the main office. And he was eventually taken to prison. The next day, we get called to the office aswell and had face the same penalty....apparently the guy ratted out on us..

Eventually the girl got a bad rep at school, for turning us in (we were real big stuff at school), and she told the cops what REALLY happened...

we got expelled (9months min from every school in town).

My boy got sent to a juvenile detention centre, and that was the last time i saw him. I heard he got murderd by the cops or something (he was only 22) but oh well..

    thats life

I'd like to think that since the incident occurred whereby he was a participant, he has since learned how to not allow someone to take advantage of a young lady, or any woman, whilst standing around, a spineless witness, being an accomplice, if but only by way of default. Lest he suffer a similar fate of having a daughter of his own, and hearing her say she was mistreated in the same fashion, and no one came to her rescue. Karma can be a b*tch. Hopefully he has learned from that experience. :?

I should hope so, but the way he verbally treats some of the ladies on this board makes a person wonder.
