Kamala Harris' "blackness" is questioned

This happens far too much in our community and it totally disgusts me. It's that damn crabs in a barrel mentality, which is nothing more than destructive infighting, and only harms us as a group.

(CNN)Sen. Kamala Harris directly confronted critics Monday who have questioned her black heritage, her record incarcerating minorities as a prosecutor and her decision to marry a white man.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club hosts DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God that aired Monday, the show's hosts asked the California Democrat to address a series of derogatory memes that have circulated on social media. One of the hosts cited a meme that said Harris is "not African-American" because her parents were immigrants born in India and Jamaica and she spent her high school years in Canada.
"So I was born in Oakland, and raised in the United States except for the years that I was in high school in Montreal, Canada," Harris responded with a laugh. "And look, this is the same thing they did to Barack (Obama). This is not new to us and so I think that we know what they are trying to do."
"They are trying to do what has been happening over the last two years, which is powerful voices trying to sow hate and division, and so we need to recognize when we're being played," Harris said.


One of the hosts followed up by asking Harris how she responds to people who question "the legitimacy of your blackness."
"I think they don't understand who black people are," Harris replied. "I'm not going to spend my time trying to educate people about who black people are. Because right now, frankly, I'm focused on, for example, an initiative that I have that is called the 'LIFT Act' that is about lifting folks out of poverty," she said, detailing her plan for a $6,000 tax credit for middle class Americans.
"I'm black, and I'm proud of being black," she said at a later point in the interview. "I was born black. I will die black, and I'm not going to make excuses for anybody because they don't understand."
Harris, a former California state attorney general, said she makes no apologies for pursuing violent criminals to keep communities safe, but added that she wished she could have done more to affect change "from the inside." She also highlighted her support for legalizing marijuana. She said she has smoked -- a joint, to be specific, adding with a laugh, "I did inhale."
"I think it gives a lot of people joy," she said, "And we need more joy."
The junior senator from California was also asked about criticism she has faced on social media for marrying a white man.
"Look, I love my husband, and he happened to be the one that I chose to marry, because I love him—and that was that moment in time, and that's it," Harris said. "And he loves me," she added laughing.

 

Oh boy there is so much nuance here. One Jamaicans arent always black but in the case of her father he is so I guess by this weird one drop rule she is too.
Two she's Brahman Indian via her mother. Top of the caste system in India but because of her dad she can never really enjoy that privilege.
Third will that being said she enjoys the exoticism poc racial ambiguous card that appeals to the greater American people and she has a white husband which helps her a lot. Barak Obama would never have gotten the support he got without a black wife who legitimized his blackness (he doesn't have a legacy with black people without her she's part of every conversation)
Harris's husband actually helps her because our community will accept a black woman with a white man never the other way around.

Now with all that said her background gives her elevated status with black people. We're the opposite of other group. The less black the better.
Her biggest obstacle is her record and reputation of being a neocon

 

I asked in the political thread if stuff like this might become a thing. Because I know in this bizarre political/racial climate people are going to pull on every loose thread in an attempt unravel candidates.

Don't be surprised when Cory Booker's sexuality becomes the next thing people pounce on.

 

It has nothing at all to do with Kamala's race for me. I just don't trust her so called progressive instincts.

Elizabeth Warren is the politician I trust the most to govern by how she runs for office.
Kamala seems like she can be bought out by powerful special interests.
Warren is a soldier for the Left and is ride or die.

And is Corey Booker really gay?? I hear things.lol It's funny because politicians do certain things by the book to advance their careers, like getting married at a certain age.

For an eligible bachelor like Booker never have to been married, it makes you wonder. Even though it doesn't matter.

 

I get people’s concerns about Harris, but I think we’ve gotta get away from quantifying some people’s level of blackness.

 

I think if he was gay he would have married to hide it. Anyway, all we need is a stable and sane government. We don't need big ideas from politicians, only a few common sense solutions.

If you have big ideas go into Art or Engineering, not government.

 

So how do you feel about social security medicare Medicaid and the ACA?

 

Agreed not a fan of her at all. Her record is awful when it comes to the poor and black people.

Booker is either gay or pan sexual. Tall good looking Princeton graduate who's a rising star was single up until last month? Does that sound right?
That's a man who either loves other men or doesn't like people at all

 

I'm for the fight against global warming, for universal health care, and social security should be fixed and we can do it without spending the amounts of money as being requested by AOC.

The government should be practical and only big enough to do what doesn't make sense for businesses, but unlike the right wingers they should actually solve practical problems.

If you want to go above and beyond, you can start a non profit. Anyone that wants can support your cause. The rest of us don't have to be apart of it unless we want. That's better than arguing like kids on a play ground every election.

 

But by that logic we wouldn't have civil rights or marriage rights for gays or a bunch of things that might be relegated to non for profits because it didn't make sense for government to get involved.

For example if your "free college" idea is so great. You can start a non profit, have people donate and raise enough money to give everyone a free ride.

Beasty you literally just said anything that doesn't make sense should be left up to non for profits that is your logic. So things like civil rights would be considered an issue better left to charity not government. And if you think school another essential should be left to charity then why pay for it at all. No k through 12 just private institutions for those who can afford it or are lucky enough to get a scholarship. Everyone else tough luck. That's your logic fam. At least own it

The best thing a government can be is stable. If it's not broke don't fuck with it.

Government isn't for big idea people it's for stable boring ass people. That's where we need them.

 

How is college essential? By the time you graduate highschool you should know how to read, write, do arithmetic and have basic social skills. You want more it's called motivation and work.

It shouldn't take more than 13 years to learn the essentials.

College and public grade school don't compare

As an unconventional black man, I have never liked it when black people got up and said that other black people were not black enough. One of the things that makes me proud to be a black man is our diversity. We are black radicals, black conservatives, black moderates, black blerds, black introverts, black extroverts, black Buddhists, black Muslims, black Pentecostals, black Baptists, black Methodists, black Catholics, black Jehovah's Witnesses, black wiccans, black LGBTQIA, black intelligentsia, black janitors, black CEOs, black teachers, black truck drivers, black government officials, and black construction workers. We are light skinned, dark skinned, chocolate skinned, fair skinned, black Democrats, black Republicans, black Greens, black Libertarians, black socialists, black communists, and black constitutionalists. We are African American, afro-Caribbean, afro-Latino, blasian, and other ethnic mixes.

Willie Lynch, who advised slave owners to pit light skinned blacks against dark skinned blacks, would smirk his ugly head off today. We black people are better than this.
Saying that someone is not black enough is the ultimate form of self-hatred. It's so disgusting I would not even say it about black Republicans.

Maintaining status quo, I guess. Administrative government. Not that I campaign for that.
