It appears that Julia Roberts's character is married to Courtney B. Vance's character I think this might be Julia Roberts's first on-screen IR role. (even though the movie clearly isn't about their relationship)
Correct. Reading the character's names on their IMDB page they are the Burns Family. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7545524/ Julia Roberts Holly Burns Courtney B. Vance Neal Burns Lucas Hedges Ben Burns Kathryn Newton Ivy Burns Mia Fowler Lacey Burns-Beeby Jakari Fraser Liam Burns-Beeby They appear to be a blended family. My only problem here is why couldn't the older children been mixed race? Including Ben. I think Justice Smith would've done just as good of a job. I know that there is mixed families that exist like that, but I would've loved to see a biological IR family on screen. But I'm not hating because blended families like that does exist and it seems like the older kids took the Father's last name so this could be a good representation of a black male character on screen. Kudos to Julia Roberts though, In her film last year her character's daughter was in a relationship with a black boy.
1. I think they got Vance's name wrong. It looks like his last name should be Beeby. Otherwise, the children's names make no sense lol 2. Which Julia Roberts movie from last year do you mean? I may want to check it out.
Yes, they are a blended family. It's my understanding Courtney Vance's character, Neal Burns, is Ben and Ivy's stepfather and the husband of Holly (Julia Roberts).
Julia Roberts' character's maiden name is Beeby. What's odd is that their biological kids are Beeby-Burns but everyone else is just Burns. lol. Something tells me due to the subject matter they probably won't explain that. And the the movie I'm talking about from last year is called Wonder.
Based in what I've heard about Julia Roberts in the past, I'm actually suprised this his her 1st IR onscreen
Earlier post from this thread: Blind-item internet gossip forum from another forum: Everyone came to the conclusion this had to be Julia Roberts. P.S. From what I understand, you can throw Nicole Kidman in the same category:
Wow, I did not even consider that option lol. So the black stepdad adopted the white kids, and they didn't keep mom's name. Fascinating. Is 'The Wonder' worth watching for that relationship alone? I'm not up for a sad flick about a special needs kid otherwise. Too painful.
These rumors are a good reason to hate gossip lol. If they're true, why aren't they in relationships with black men to begin with? We're good enough to cheat with but not good enough to date seriously? WTH is that??? IF this is true (which we'll never know), I actually like Roberts and Kidman less.
Well it's not really sad per say. It is uplifting and that boy is really likable. I knew a kid like him in grade school.
I think Julia just recognizes the industry for how racist it is. Maybe like Nicole Kidman she doesn't date by race. You also have to take in how racially segregated Hollywood is which is why you didn't see too many IR relationships. The diversity in Movies and TV the past 2 years is the most we have seen EVER! Note: I believed Julia said in a Howard Stern interview she used to date a black man.
It's cute. Without giving too much away it is a step in the right direction and not the stereotypical IR relationship we see. Cute Teen Romance, but the movie is about of course that boy so there isn't a real focus on them.
Pffft when she was America's Sweetheart in the 90s you'd nevvvvvvvvver see her with a brotha on screen romantically. Now that she's on Netflix level all bets are off
I mentioned this movie last year when it went into production after the announcement that Vance had been cast as her husband. Recently it made the rounds at the Toronto Film Festival. Nice to see that a trailer has dropped. Vance probably has anywhere between the third to fifth biggest part in the film. The movie is primarily about the strained relationship between Roberts' character and her first son from a previous marriage. Vance plays her current husband who doesn't trust her returning son because of his previous actions. The movie supposedly takes place over the course of a single day. So, you wanted Robert's character to have had two black husbands/baby daddies? If that's what you meant then you are ignoring that would possibly create a stigma about her character that is unnecessary and would get in the way of the story. The script is the script. I'm certain the writer wanted to create greater tension by having the first two children of Roberts' character being from a different father than her last two children. I'm almost as certain that Vance's character was not conceived as white in the script but he was cast anyway.
Wouldn't have been if John Grisham wasn't such an uncomfortable white male Southerner and Denzel Washington wasn't a stone cold coward. Actually she has had more IR onscreen stuff then we are acknowledging. Let's not forget her work alongside Blair Underwood in Soderbergh's "Full Frontal". Much of the dialogue between the two of them was improvised and that dialogue included discussions of a black male being allowed to get some love onscreen from a white chick. Their characters may have shared a kiss too. Also in the film "Conspiracy Theory" her character had a little flirtation going on with a black lawmen played by Cylk Cozart who had fourth billing in the film. Of course Mel Gibson was her true male lead in the film though.
