Another IR couple between a black man and white woman in books taken out for the screen It appears that the producers are dropping the Luke Cage and Jessica Jones (for at least a while) and are going ahead with his relationship with Clare Temple... http://comicbook.com/marvel/2017/06/10/rosario-dawson-filming-scenes-for-luke-cage-season-2/ Photos from the filming of Luke Cage Season 2 shows that at least for a couple more seasons they are going ahead with his relationship with Clare Temple. The Defenders air in August when Luke and Jessica reunite.. If it's a definite axe and remember she did kill his wife do you guys think that's a bad move or was the plan all along?
I've said it before and I'll say it again : 1. Luke Cage & Claire Temple were an actual couple for most of Luke Cage's early comic days on through his partnership with Iron Fist long before he ever met Jessica Jones, so they'll play with that relationship for awhile. 2. Jessica Jones, still has her issues she needs to work out, one as mentioned is the fact she killed Luke's wife. Granted she was mind controlled when she did, but still. So until she does work on her issues and is in a better head space, there by a better person, why would anyone want Luke and Jessica together outside of just a gratuitous IR hookup? Then everyone will be bitching about why the black man gotta be with the messed up white woman. Black man can't catch no breaks.......
From the standpoint of storytelling, this is the best choice. Luke would stabilize her story too much (and also turn him into Capt Save-a-Hoe) Kristen and Mike had great chemistry, and given the cultural popularity of their shows, they will have multiple seasons to pull these two together, which is clearly the end game.
Understandable that'swhy I mentioned for people to keep in my mind she killed his wife, but keep in mind this is still Hollywood and it follows a trend of taking IR out from books when they put it on screen. So I'm looking at this from both sides.
They're end game. That part of the story is set. Marvel is right to separate them. If they were a couple, they'd have no identity except one built on them being together.
THIS. Both characters have individual series and both characters are basically starting their journeys as heroes. Just like the actual comic series, this is all about character development and evolution for both characters.
Considering that Luke & Jessica's relationship is kind of a known and fan favorite coupling, I don't think that's going away. That would be like not having Luke & Danny not becoming friends & partners or Misty & Colleen doing the same. Backlash if they don't do any of those particular relationships. If they end up eventually doing Misty & Danny together (especially since the Danny Rand we've seen thus far leaves a lot to be desired) and don't do Luke & Jessica, then "Yeah" I'll start to think something is up.
Ummm.....I say this is somewhat bullshit. Let's be real....the character of Claire Temple would have been left in the dustbin of history if she hadn't been dug up for the Daredevil show, By that I mean no one cared about this character at all and basically no one had remembered her. Jessica Jones on the other hand while a newer creation was a much more prominent figure. She had her own comic book for a time. She was a heavy presence in other marvel comics. Most importantly though she ended up marrying Luke Cage and had a daughter with him. That made her the primary and most important relationship in Luke Cage's history, past and present. The majority of people watching these comic book shows and movies wouldn't have been alive or too young to read comic books when Claire was around but definitely would have been around during Jessica's run. And Marvel properties on the screen for the most part have been incorporating the most recent PIVOTAL plot developments of the characters that took place in the comic books. Thus for not just long range but for the short range as well Jessica Jones should really matter to Luke Cage's life. But in season one of Luke Cage's show Jessica Jones didn't matter at all. Perhaps this was a plan by the folks at Marvel. To keep Luke and Jessica apart for now and let them slowly become a true couple. But I don't think Marvel TV works in the same way as Marvel Films. The TV side of things doesn't have a Kevin Feige who controls which direction the characters are going in. I believe the TV showrunners have more control. And if so the guy in charge of the Cage show, Cheo Corker, may be a problem. Full disclosure....I was REALLY disappointed with the Luke Cage show. After episode three it was below average, boring, aimless, dull, unimaginative and overly talkative. Worst of all though the show seemed to lose track of Luke Cage. He was off the screen too much and we got too much Misty. But what also became noticeable to me is that the show did its best to ignore Luke's hookup with Jessica Jones. She was never mentioned by name and only referenced once or twice as some temporary rebound for Cage after his wife's passing. In fact the show took pains to emphasize that Luke's preference, his only preference, was for black women. It came across as a rebuke of Luke's involvement with Jessica on her show IMO. And I have a theory about that. Corker is a huge Luke Cage fan from back in the day. He is old enough to recall a time in which Claire Temple was a love interest, when the only women Cage was eve associated with was black. Cage's buddy could have relationships with Pam Greer types like Misty. But Luke was limited to only women f is own race for decades, And this may be Corker's preference. Even worse he may be one of those black dudes who have such misguided loyalty to black women that they won't abide by a black male character being paired with anyone other than black female characters. There are plenty of black guys like that for some reason. Don't forget about ten years ago when John Singleton was trying to put together a Luke Cage film he was trying to cast a black actress for the part of Jessica Jones. If these are examples of some sort of silly racial solidarity, I should point out that no other demographic displays a similar streak of loyalty. Certainly not black women showrunners/filmmakers. MIke Colter who plays Luke Cage hinted a couple of weeks ago that the relationship between Luke and Jessica is reignited in some manner in the Defenders show. Curiously not too long after that I read a quote by Corker that what takes place regarding the main heroes in the Defenders doesn't won't carry over to the individual TV series. I found those comments curious because continuity is key in the Marvel film and TV universe. Who is Corker to dispute that and why was he the only one making such claims? And then started to wonder if this was his way of saying that anything that goes down between Luke and Jessica in the Defenders will all be ignored by him. Perhaps this guy is the lone obstacle to a Luke-Jessica pairing. But he is a might obstacle considering he runs the Luke Cage series.I have a sneaky suspicion how Mike Colter feels. He is in constant communication with the actress who plays Jessica Jones. I think he really loves working with her and would prefer the Cage hookup with Jones. I should add a couple of years back when the guy running Marvel TV was introducing the Jessica Jones cast to a New York Comic Con crowd, he described Colter's Cage as the guy who will eventually be the love of Jessica;s life. So perhaps there is a long game plan. Or maybe Corker has since taken that whole possibility off track.
Yeah, I have learned to keep my senses about myself when it comes to Hollywood doing IR. I would love see that type of love story telling that has you rooting for them leading to their relationship that would lead to the rare Interracial romance on TV. But that would take writing it as such, so we will see with the Defenders in August. BTW, speaking of Danny, did you like IronFist? I seen and I liked it. I don't know why people are trashing it so much.
I wasn't a fan of the Netflix Iron Fist on multiple levels. They should have cast an actor with some sort of martial arts background (AND "NO" NOT RAY PARK) and should have focused more on the mystical & martial arts elements of the character as well as tied the story to K'un L'un, especially Madame Gao and her criminal organization. Too many good elements from the Iron Fist mythos overlooked that could have been used.
I liked Luke Cage's first season, I'll start with that. It was nothing special but it build character depth. But this is what will make the Jessica Jones relationship controversial, because the show did play to black women with his love life. I believe if Jessica Jones is making an appearance on his show he might ruin it just to suit a black female audience, because typically black shows or movies tend to be not that friendly to IR between black men and white women. Unfortunately some black filmmakers in Hollywood are scared of "offending" black women. That's another reason why I say we need more positive IR love stories between black men and white women. Because when BW don't like it people justify it, and talk about how they are right. But we will see how everything develops.
So basically cater to a limited audience who are only familiar with the more recent aspects of Luke Cage's history and everything else in the 40 + years of the characters history that can be played around with in various ways to build character can be dumped? Good Luck with that. Try doing that shit with other well established characters and see how well that works out. Shit didn't work too well for the X-Men franchise by making Wolverine the center of the X-Men ala recent comics history rather than making it a team/family centric franchise as in its early days.
Give me Wolverine back I will take it over fucking Magneto and Mystique taking all the screentime. At least Logan is a real X-men.
One thing I will say is I found out about this through fan bases that LOVE this couple(as do we.). Another example that IR couples on screen CAN and does have fan bases. And even though they get ignored they are strong and that is refreshing to know.
Iron Fist makes no sense to me they cast a white dude with no martial arts skills and yet unlike with Daredevil they don't put a ***** mask on the character even though he is well known for wearing one in the comics.
Jones and Cage should not get together until near the final seasons of their respective shows. It doesn't make sense to have them get together too soon.
Since they went with a white guy, they should have gotten Jason Statham but they probably didn't want to pay him. Fist is supposed to be even more skilled in martial arts than Black Panther, and Captain America, a true badass. They should have done that movie the right way. Anyway I'll watch it 5 + years from now if I happen to see it at CVS for 2.99.
