Funny you bring this up because I've been going thru something somewhat related to the topic of standards when it comes to my ex wife. Because we have kids together, I'm eternally linked to her. Her lack of vision and self pride in her personal appearance really aggravates and disgusts the fuck out of me.

 

Yah I definitely have no attraction to him at all. The thing I find the most surprising though is how he has done things I would have bet my life on him never doing in the past decade. Sometimes he starts talking about something and I just have to cut him off/change the topic. I think the biggest thing for me is that he did things that caused me to lose all respect for him. The thing I have found rather interesting (and somewhat frustrating) is how much I can see how different he is without me. I don't know if that makes sense. I think people are who they are, but when they are with someone that relationship brings out different parts of you - good and bad. People support each other, feed off each other, fuel each other's fire/passions in life in different ways. When that ends some people continue on in the same vein and grow in all sorts of amazing ways. Others seem to go back to what and how they were doing things before. I just notice that in many ways he's stuck, even shrunk in life, which I find rather sad. I used to still try to help in a way (because it all affects my kids) but he's gotten into that realm where it's like he's an energy leach and I realized it's beyond me.

 

I recently (this year) got out of a relationship like this. My life has gotten better with each passing day while she is essentially in the same loop. IRL, I tend to be laid back and keep to myself. It took a short time to get back to being my old self, and I am sure the same may have happened to you. That's the funny thing about miserable people. They are never happy unless they are arguing and spreading their misery. And I agree, you do feed off of that energy and if you aren't careful, it can bring you down to. But, the moment you leave those kinds of people, you start to become the better parts of yourself again. I am happy that you were able to move on and get back to normal.
