One of my best friends is a very, very hard right conservative. Ultra religious. The whole bit. He's so far right, that he feels slavery couldn't have been as bad as "liberal" educators have made it out to be. His rational; slave owners where business owners. And what business owner would abuse his equipment in that manner? ...lol

I kid you not. He's that far to the right. My girlfriend can't stand he and his wife. She finds their version of christianity ... lacking. To put it mildly.

But he and I have a blast. We argue politics and religion whenever we get together. For us, it's like a game of basketball in the street. Both of us are from the Detroit area so we get loud about it and it's never a big deal. It's never personal. Except for pride, feelings don't get hurt. We go at it till we get tired of going back and forth. Sometimes I have to admit he's right. Sometimes he has to admit I'm right or agree to disagree and move on. Afterwards we get a pizza or watch a movie or just shoot the shit about the old days in the club scene back in the D. He's probably one of the coolest guys I know. He makes a very good living and will give you shirt off of his back if you need it (but if the government asks ... hell no!).

I think we should strive to have friends of different views. It's good for us. It keeps us civil and serves to remind us that we're all connected in ways we're not always cognizant of. People are the basis of movements and movements feul progress. None of that happens if we stick to people who view things exactly as we do. Growth is uncomfortable. And it should be. Keeping that in mind, you never know who you'll pick up an idea from that will shift your whole way of thinking and perceiving life going forward.

I believe that you should vote for policies not people. People are flawed and will disapoint you. But if they can be a tool advance the policies you care about, then that's who should get your vote. Their personal foibles be damned. That changed my whole view of politics. I learned that at nineteen from one of my mentors. He was a Republican.

Your world can change in a sentence. Truth knows no ideology. It simply is. Why limit it's pathways to you by having only friends of one kind.

 

You guys love telling have truths. Step in line to make sure trump doesn't win.

 

Anyone who has that view on slavery could never be a friend it's the same b.s. opinions that fuel support of police brutality. I can be cool with most people but friend is a strong word akin to family

 

You can't get anything done without corruption people in power are greedy and self serving. There is literally no way around it as we saw with Sanders. The best candidate for the people in our life time couldn't make it happen. The dumb as fuck population would rather go for name brands and entertainment. That will never change so here we are having to vote for the lesser of two evils again.
That's the government we want. The people get what they deserve for being dumb lazy and blind

All I know is this certain kinds of thinking left unchecked have insanely dire consequences. The genocide of the Jews started with funny cartoons and later evolved into the atrocities.
Certain shit is plain not ok and supporting hate/fear mongers want xenophobia and inequality are not good people.

 

This due may be black but I cannot support or be friends with someone who has that view of slavery. It's ignorant and the world would be better off without people with his mentality. It's poisonous.

Nah. We've been friends for decades. Since before he was a conservative and he's had my back when some of my liberal friends where nowhere to be found. I can't just throw good friends away. Doesn't sit well with me.

I think there is good and bad in both parties. I am more of a middle of the road guy. I don't agree with everything either side says, but I can agree with some things. I, however, won't pretend that liberals aren't just as racist as they conservatives they hate. I have experienced this, and even elaborated a bit on it in previous posts. But, like I mentioned before, I can agree on certain things from the conservatives and liberals depending on the subject. Even a broken clock is right twice a day...
