Let this be a lesson make sure that you clean up your online footprint before you decide to get into the spotlight. Because it will come back and bit you in the ass. Karlie Hay found that out in a big way. She had not even been crowned for 10 minutes before it came to light that over the past few years the newly crowned Miss Teen USA had used some rather harsh and racist language on twitter not merely once but several times. "I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for. Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person. I am honored to hold this title and I will use this platform to promote the values of The Miss Universe Organization, and my own, that recognize the confidence, beauty and perseverance of all women." https://twitter.com/RealMissTXteen/status/759648797152522240?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw To her credit she did not give the usual, I have black (insert relationship here). Oddly enough she got the crown and will be living with the new Miss USA. Talk about an awkward living situation.
My take I hate the word and don't use it...wish it would die off. I'm all for calling people and racists out, and perhaps she should be still, but unfortunately, from what l read and hear, this is how many kids of all races speak to one another today. I'm betting her n-- were white. What l find stranger is how the A and ER endings have now become synonymous for the most part...they have no real clue of the ugly historical context the ER means. It's like when girls today use "my bitches" (and hoes) - women never used to refer to each other that way in common conversation. It used to startle me but now lm used to it because l see it doesn't come from a rude place. This girl doesn't sound like she's racist, she sounds like she was "trying" to be cute @ getting fake-huffy at her friend watching a show with another chick..and threatening to toilet wrap another friend called Abbey ..sounds like stupid feigned comments between them. IDK..Am l misreading this, or no?
Unfortunately these words are no longer seen as racist or even rude. And its strange to hear girls refer to their female friends as bitches ! Even more than guys saying it.
It's not an excuse but it's becoming generational. Yes it's still wrong for anyone to use the word in any form, but I just have a sense her White and non-White peers just don't care. When I was a teen no White person ever got a pass to use the N-word. Miss Teen USA had a choice to make, and I think they made a mistake by not holding this girl more accountable for her language, considering she's going to be representing the pageant for an entire year. Another sign of the dumbing down of America. When there are no standards anymore, what is the standard for acceptable behavior??? If she had been referring specifically to Black people or was using it in a more obviously racial context, I have to believe she would have been dropped by Miss Teen USA. Like if she tweeted, "all N-babies need to die." So adults still can't use it, but it's okay for kids?? Odd world we live in.
There is a dramatic diffrence in tone between the ni**er version of the word and the ni**a version. When a white kid uses the ni**er version he or she is likely a racist. It's also funny how enlightened these people become after their shit gets brought to light.
Yeah not blaming Rap, but it's popularity among white kids Asians etc...the word gradually lost its historical context. Thump.go on YT and FB, Instagram even black blogs... In casual conversation, the A ending has enmeshed with the ER amongst these kids of today. Older adults who know, know better. Same with the fag/f-gg--t word. Formerly so offensive, Today..not as much.
Well, at least she owned up to it and didn't go with the ol' "my account got hacked" excuse that people love these days. And a double special shout-out to her for not "praying" about it. Still, an actual apology would have gone a long way to showing some of that education she claims to have but how often do people who live and die by social media ever own up to when they've done something stupid?
It almost seems as though her account was hacked. Wow, people really talk like that to their friends??? Imagine what she'll say to her enemies. But I don't think she was being racist, much like Bella Hadid I believe she is just being a young and ignorant teenager with no proper guidance... not racist. Where the hell are their parents? These are kids that need to be educated and disciplined and those are two of the biggest problems with this society when it comes to raising kids. Not much education, not much discipline. Kids has a better chance of growing from ignorance than adults do, so they need educated and disciplined. With that said she should be stripped of her crown, them NOT doing it is just an example of what I mean by a lot of adults in this society not educating and disciplining these kids. Teenager doesn't make them adults, they are still kids.
I agree with Goodlove no one should get a pass no matter the race. Words don't die... They fade away. let it fade away.
You misunderstand my point. I'm not giving her a pass, quite the opposite. I'm saying i don't agree with the implication that her use of the word isn't a big deal because "all the kids say it". When a white American girl uses that word, especially with the hard "R" spelling, i'm forced to believe she meant it to be negative.
Looks more like she got lazy with the spell check. If you try to send nigga it corrects it as nigger so I am willing to bet that's what happened and she didn't correct it. And truthfully most context is lost on most people. Have no problem with the word I care only about the context and how it's delivered. Simply not saying something doesn't mean you aren't racist and saying a particular word doesn't automatically make you a racist how you carry yourself does.
Kids do and say a lot of stupid things trying to be cool. However, there are consequences to their actions too...and there should be. It's part of growing up and learning to take responsibility for their actions. She's putting herself out there as an image that is supposed to represent something. She may not be able to go back and change what she did before, but she certainly could do whatever possible to address it. She could address it and use that as a way to teach others through what she did. There are plenty of people out there who do really horrendous things that step up and take responsibility for their actions and do what they can to make amends. It all could be a learning situation for teens. It all depends on how they handle it though. Dismissing, discounting, excusing it away....none of that is the way to handle it. I agree that there needs to be standards and people need to be held accountable for their actions.
And this is the mistake that I believe the pageant is making by not stripping her of the crown. Because allowing children to still relish with the rewards isn't teaching them anything... I guarantee it that she stills remains ignorant even with her apology. These kids don't learn a thing if education and discipline is not delivered.
Bliss you would have won the bet looking up those twitter names you find the profile and in fact you are right they are. Nah the account was not hacked these tweets were sent a couple of years ago before anyone knew who she was, though it would seem that the person that exposed them knew exactly where to look because they were basically posted minutes after she won so it may have been someone she went to school with who knew her I don't know. As for her parents, well her platform was alcoholism and substance abuse awareness and apparently she comes from a family where alcohol and other things were commonplace so I guess that is where the personal struggles come in. I guess you could say it is kinda the affluenza defense in a way. I never had anyone to teach me that it was wrong so I never knew it was wrong. It has worked in Texas before. That being said she really did not get any life lesson here she will feel the heat for a couple of days and then life will go back to normal. This ultimately cost her nothing at all hell she might even receive a net gain out of this whole situation. As well as the Miss Universe organization, see will have to do all the usual Miss Teen USA media tour I am sure Steve Harvey who owns a stake in the Miss Universe Organization will have her on his show at some point.
