Domestic abuse is committed with the intention of gaining and maintaining complete control over the victim. It rears its ugly head in many ways—and not all are physical... this makes it "easier" for both women and men to be victims.

Most of us think of domestic abuse as a husband beating his wife, but this image, while certainly abuse, is just one example. Abuse comes in the most commonly known form of physical abuse... to emotional, financial, and social abuse. It can begin with guilt and intimidation to wear the victim down. Although the majority of our population does not realize it since the focus usually ends up on the physical abuse, each method of abuse feels as devastating.

This link is to an article with probably my favourite description of gaslighting... the reason I think so many people stay, even though they have the option to leave. It's not as easy as it seems... and on average it takes 5 tries before the person being abused can finally leave the relationship for good.

A man discusses being abused by his gf

I Didn't Know a Man Could Be Abused by a Woman

Noll still didn't accept that he was a victim of domestic violence, mainly because it never occurred to him that a man could be abused by a woman. But though women are three times more likely to be killed or seriously injured by a male partner than vice versa, up to 29% of straight men in the United States have been the victim of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. (Even more - up to 48% – experienced psychological and emotional abuse at the hands of their partners.) Each year, more than 830,000 men are victims of domestic abuse - that's one every 37.8 seconds.
