BIG time! It was unbelievable seeing that. Street full both sides of homeless people. I heard that they have shelters in NYC because they want to get the homeless off the streets only because it's a major tourist destination. But elsewhere there's abandoned buildings like in Memphis yet they won't put the homeless up in them.

I have seen homeless people here, too. Some of these people are either transient people trying to get money to move on to somewhere else and they have to live in their vehicles, or displaced people who are living in the streets for various reasons. I once gave a man $50.00 on Christmas day. It was enough to get him a room for the night and something to eat.

It's definately sad. And most people are so ignorant to the fact. It's awful. People are selfish. I bet that made both of your day. I did the same but with food and how grateful and genuine they were to receive a meal was touching. In NYC it was hard to tell who was legit and who wasn't. But regardless, it's so freakin sad to see. It's 2016 and that shit still exists.

There are lots of people who will play the homeless person role to get money. A young man came up to me and asked for a dollar. He kept saying, "Please, in the name of Jesus." I gave him a dollar and walked away. A minute later, another young man approached me with the same request. I give him a dollar and walked away. It suddenly dawned on me that these so-called homeless people often work in groups. Women who are homeless sometimes engage in prostitution. One such woman approached me at the drive-through at McDonald's. It is vey sad, indeed.

I have seen the homeless in NYC. I have seen them sleeping on or near the steam vents on the sidewalk in the winter. Down here in South Florida, homeless advocates and police bring people in when the weather is bad(hurricane or tropical storm) or when it gets cold, which happens every 5-6 years. They are taken to a warm place where they can eat and sleep. Churches also take part, too.

Speaking of which, that was also pretty cool to see the steam and the barbage stacked high on the side walk..just like in the movies.

that's good to hear. At least they do something. Very sad still. Puts things into perspective.

I have seen that once in the winter. That and the smell of urine and rotten food. Which isn't in the movies. lol.

I passed by two men laying down on folded cardboard boxes. They were in conversation as they were turning in for the night near 42nd Street(what I long ago called Porno House Row). I had been thinking of living in NYC for a long time. I wanted to live in Greenwich Village because of the openness there. I recall one night when I walked around in the Village. It was a warm Saturday evening and the streets were filled with all sorts of people some stood in line to get into club or an outdoor cafe. Street performers were making money with their talents. Some sat on the stoop of their apartment and like myself, they watched people go by.
It was the first time to arrive in the village, and I thought I was in Heaven.

Homelessness exists because culturally we are shitty to our core here. We'd rather dismiss these people as mentally ill and tell everyone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps with no instruction on how to do so. Americans as a whole are truly awful people.

homelessness is a problem in a lot of countries, not only in the states. it might be more visual in some places and sure the states are known for that pic of them moving around with those packed shopping carts since it appears in really many movies and series.
i would not allow myself to pass a judgement on americans as being awful for it existing as that. that would put us, germans in the same draw, coz it s likely here.
i see the problem in the system. just like in the states, they offer them places to sleep at in a rather not sufficient manner. it s not enough.
just like you saying, they dismiss them as mentally ill, they do the same here stamping all of them alcoholics.
the problem of homelessness is to a point society made. unemployment and not enough affordable housing. and once it hits all done is to get them off the street temporarily and if lucky offer some food and medical support by charity organisation. this will never be enough to solve the problem.
this ppl need much more help then they get and the truth is, that noone wants to pay for it. and the roots of the problem are deep down in our societys.

Some homeless people are comfortable being homeless. They believe that they are free. No job(no boss) , no rent to pay to a landlord and have some places to go. The Reverend Al Sharpton came to a vacant lot to open a tent city for the homeless in Liberty City. There was a problem with that. The lot wasn't enough for the homeless people in Liberty City and other folks living in the area just didn't like it. These people could only live in cardboard boxes which could break down in the rain and could be set on fire by anyone who has a dislike for the homeless. And it wasn't enough for the cold temperatures. The county had a better idea. The county acquired an apartment building and offered to move the homeless in, under the condition that they find work after a few months. Some of the homeless rejected the idea because it meant surrendering their freedom.

Some people are homeless by choice. To get assistance, they pretend to be mentally ill to get a supplement check or food stamps(a reloadable card). Churches offer free clothing sometimes and even employment assistance.

Dude get the fuck all the way out of here with that.
It's so annoying when people post these anecdotal examples
The vast majority of people who are homeless are homeless because of job loss bankruptcy due to medical bills and jobs moving over seas. It's not a choice for most people and when people push the assertion that it's because they want freedom from work it makes it easy for them to be dehumanized it's bullshit fam

Also a major reason is mental health issues and our lack of a good mental health system.

The "homes first" (those projects that provide housing FIRST and then help with job seeking, drug and alcohol programs, etc) projects have been very successful.

People aren't homeless because they want freedom. That's just crap.

    Yep

It's about to get really bad here too. SF and LA are bad enough. Sac is building a new huge arena downtown (where many homeless from the outlining areas are dumped) and you know they are going to be doing something to move them out of there now. Can't have them bothering people spending money down there.

It's a big topic of debate with the Mayoral candidates. But we'll see if anything really happens.

I posted that there are various reasons why people are homeless. And I have seen and dealt with the homeless on many occasions. I see them panhandling at the intersections and hanging around grocery stores and restaurants. Homeless advocates explain the reason for why they keep doing it. It's because they make money panhandling and they don't know anything else or don't want to work for anyone. Jobs going overseas is reaching a bit. There are lots of people who will do all that they can to change their situation. But there are those who accept it.

Yup! Too many of us don't see it as the problem it really is. Most simply see them as bums and unsightly while ignoring the real problems.

Not nearly as many as people pretend it is. Like some heart disease is purely genetic while most is a result of bad diet and inactivity.
Saying people choose it masks the real problem so we can pretend there's nothing we can do. That's total lazy horseshit.

Exactly. Everyone is ok with this atrocity until it's them. I never understand how everyone is so comfortable with insane amounts of money being spent on tanks that will never be used but ok with people sleeping in the streets hungry. Sometimes I think humanity is a complete lost cause.
