Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead at a ranch in West Texas on Saturday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) released a statement Saturday confirming Scalia's death, calling him "a patriot" and an "unwavering defender of the written Constitution and the Rule of Law."

Scalia appears to have died in his sleep of natural causes, according to reports.

Scalia had served on the Supreme Court since his 1986 appointment by President Ronald Reagan. At the time of his death, he had been the longest sitting current member of the Supreme Court.

Known for his clear, sometimes bombastic prose, he was a leading proponent of "originalism" -- the belief that the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted as the founders would have understood the document.

It is very rare that a sitting Supreme Court justice will die while on the bench. From 1955-2005, there was not a single justice who died while serving until Chief Justice William Rehnquist died in September 2005.

It is rare indeed. Not since 2005 and the early 50's had Supreme court justices had died on the bench. Now,there will be foolishness by the GOP Senate wanting to drag their feet until a new POTUS comes in but,I know there will be one this year.

...with a pillow over his head.

John Poindexter, who found the 79-year-old Justice dead in his room in the El Presidente suite at the Cibolo Creek Ranch in Texas, said Scalia looked peaceful.

'We discovered the judge in bed, a pillow over his head. His bed clothes were unwrinkled. He was lying very restfully,' Poindexter, the owner of the ranch, said.

I would love to know the stats on people who 'died in their sleep' with a pillow over their heads.

It sounds odd but may not be.

At least I know why the far right wing fringe is saying Scalia was murdered.:smt087

I think it would be in terrible taste to celebrate his passing, yet I will concede that a little grin crossed my face as I watched the news.

Is that what they are saying? I guess it might raise an eyebrow or two.
Yeah, those stats would be interesting. Gif on point ;-)

One of the first persons on the scene, the ranch owner, clarified that one pillow was under his head, another ''over the bed.'' The media misquoted him. He died of natural causes, which is too bad. I was hoping the CIA had suffocated him with a pillow.
