I agree Straight Out of Compton should have gotten a Best Director nomination, if nothing else. Similar to John Singleton's Oscar nomination for Boyz in the Hood, acknowledging the overall quality of the movie and its acting. The Academy IMO missed the reception or applause Straight Out of Compton received from critics and audiences, which is a direct reflection of the age and race of the Academy Award nomination committee. About Best Supporting Actor nominations and the thought there should be a Best Actor nomination from the same movie, when Louis Gossett, Jr. won Best Supporting Actor for An Officer And A Gentleman, you could easily make the case that Richard Gere at least deserved a Best Actor nomination. But he didn't get it, despite Richard Gere's performance in that movie potentially being the greatest of his career. I understand the outcry from Black actors, writers, directors, etc., and that spotlight needs to be shone brightly on the Academy to force them to change how they evaluate movies, but it's still just a popularity contest. When you realize guys like Paul Newman NEVER won an Oscar for an on screen performance by the Academy, it's hard for me to take the award too seriously.
The people ön the oscar committeeare mummified white old farts. Thats the first thing that needs to change, then We need more writers, producers, Directors etc that are not white. Maybe when that happens, i start watching again. ATM, i cant really stand any award shows.
True. Spielberg, Lucas and others have all received awards on black-themed award shows. I agree with this. Just putting a person in because of blackness is ridiculous, but I don't like the obvious ignoring of some great work by black actors and non-white actors generally. Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation, for example? Michael Caine spoke to this earlier today, but Charlotte Rampling's claim that the boycott is anti-white racism is ludicrous. Disappointed in her... That being said, Hollywood and the Academy are horrible assessors of talent. Foreign and independent films generally are of vastly greater quality than the films the Academy chooses. Same here.
True. Eminent, Robin Thicke, gospel singer Martha Minuzzi, Taylor Wayne and others had been on those shows.

Charlton Heston was on that board when he was alive. He once said that if any actor or actress wanted to win an Oscar for Best Actor/Actress and Supporting Actor/Actress, is to play a handicapped person. Handicap is a rather broad term. A person can be physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, financially handicapped. Handicapped people in films generate audience sympathy. It had worked for Tom Hanks(Forrest Gump, Philadelphia), Claire Trevor(she won an Oscar for her performance as Edward G. Robinson's girlfriend caught in the vice grip of her alcoholic dependence), Red Buttons(for his role in Sayonara as a service man who is married to a Japanese woman), and others. This is why I say that it is better to go the indie route than mainstream so that actors, writers and directors can be the focus. Tyler Perry didn't go the Hollywood route and now he has benefited from working with Lionsgate films for distributing his films. And since he had full control over his films, he did better than others in Hollywood.
I don't think you can really say that for the Academy Awards. The nomination process is conducted by experts in the field in which they're nominating movies. If THEY can't figure out what the best movies are to nominate, then no one can. NOMINATIONS VOTING PROCESS Regular awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective film achievements in a wide variety of categories. Most categories are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch–actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. http://www.oscars.org/oscars/voting Whilst I haven't seen Beasts of No Nation, I've read that Idris Elba could have been nominated for it. But, wasn't that only released on Netflix? If so, that's likely why he didn't get a nomination and the movie wasn't recognized. And unfortunately, we'll never know how many votes the ones who were snubbed received. Aren't the people shouting about boycotting millionaires who made their money from Hollywood? :smt102
Pretty much how I feel about it. I'd like to see a list of the movies that should qualify. I'm willing to listen.
Not. There are all sorts of politics at play behind the scenes in the Academy. A lot of these people don't even watch all of the movies that they're voting on. With all of the legit issues that black people are facing in the US at present and the growing backlash to many of the protest movements, this just seems like a tone deaf, idiotic play on the part of some millionaires in Hollywood that validates the beliefs of people who think that blacks in the US do nothing but complain about trivial shit. BTW, for the life of me, I don't understand why the general public is supposed to give two shits about some industry award show if they aren't actually a part of that industry.
Exactly People don't have water and housing but we're all suppose to care about a bunch of narcissistic rich assholes not getting some award? What little babies. So pathetic. This reminds me of Tidal. I'm beginning to hate new blacks
They did something similar with Blood Diamond. Dicaprio got the best actor nom even though the movie was about Djmon
All I know is that back in the day if something was an Oscar winner you knew it was going to be worth the watch. I don't think the above is true anymore, I mean in every category this is applicable Kids movies, Sci Fi, Action, Drama and comedy. Things just don't seem as good these days ( I liked Boyhood though, but I'm not sure if it was the idea of the movie being in production for that long is what I liked or whether it was a good movie in the true sense of the word Bloody GOOD) I didn't like Birdman though and it didn't seem that much of a muchness to me. Big Hero 6 won the kids stuff last year WTF? my kids were not blown away neither was I, preferred The Boxtrolls but that didn't blow me away either. I think the quality of kids movies have gone down immeasurably that should tell you something. I mean with UP the score on that was enough to reduce you too tears (when she is told she can't have children and the funeral scene for Elle) Nothing good going on and what is genuinely good is overlooked imo. They need to sort the whole thing out and then the inclusion part will sort itself out as well.
And that is exactly why I stopped watching or caring about the Oscars and other awards shows. The Oscars primarily seem to have no concrete criteria on how what movies, actors and other behind the scenes people get nominated for awards. Outside of the Academy nominating members personal opinions what is the exact gauge for getting an Oscar nomination?
In order to get nominated we need oscar worthy performances...in order to get oscar worthy performances we need more black actors...if we had more black actors then we would need directors to choose them for leading roles..then we need to get the general public to hit the box office...there is not a simple answer... these award shows are a bore anyway...
Idris Elba just gave a speech to the British Parliament on Diversity in media and he was given a standing ovation, Spike Lee basically said the same thing. The Oscars in and of themselves are just a symptom of a much larger problem. One of the most powerful things he said was that the people making the decisions are basically too scared to take a risk on casting something different they would rather play it safe. With all the new entertainment options out there they go with the tide and true formula. The Netflix, Hulu, and Amazons take the opposite approach and are reaping the rewards. At the end of the day though all awards shows are stupid anyway. You get a bunch of people getting dressed up in gowns and other things that cost more than some people make in a damn year. Basically screaming look at me look at me I am so great. They are pointless for the general public if you are in the industry giving the award why does it matter to you. I have not watched the oscars since college and even then it was more about the oscar pools more than about the show itself. End of the day if you tell an excellent story people will want to hear it, make a great movie people will want to see it.
