Valid, or not? I didn't provide a link, because it will invariably be an Opinion piece, and wanted to know what YOUR opinion is on the controversy/call to boycott/blackout/whiteout is so far... Is it overblown or not discussed enough?
The imbalance is glaring. But as someone else said in another discussion, if things are changed, will they award black actors just to attempt to fix the imbalance (throwing a bone) or will they be nominated/win on true merit? We'll never know...
Definitely add more minorities to Hollywood board members Definitely add more minorities to Hollywood board members: But nominating Will Smith just because he is black is just nominal. Truly nominate people because they are worthy. Not because they are black...
I'm torn on this issue. On one hand I like that people are making awareness of the racial inequality in Hollywood. But on the other hand, It feels a little like they are calling for some kind of Oscar affirmative action.
I think the awards are stupid as fuck. But I agre with thump. . Why beg someone to like me or ? I say stop going the awards show and start one of their own ,Not just blacks but all minorities (asians, latinos ect....) . Otherwise suck it up cause it's a no win situation. Oh wait
At first glance I thought the thread title was "OSCARS Booty Call", and I thought 'who the hell is Oscar & why should we give a damn?' LOL I thought it must be another lame pseudo celebrity IR couple or cheesy porn thread until I noticed who created it, which made me take a second look. As for the Oscars, I haven't watched or kept up with them in years. The way they do things, from who they choose to snub or to win, leaves me unimpressed with the academy awards crap.
I stopped watching any of the award shows be it the Oscars to the Soul Train Awards years ago because all of them have had their share of WTF nominations and snubs. Nevermind how monotonous they all are.
This is becoming a bit tedious because award shows are a 4 hour popularity showcase. Who wore what? Who's the date with them if they are single? Which award after party did someone go to? So many questions. The last and the best award show that I have ever seen was the Saturn Awards for Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy. I saw this one in 1977. William Shatner was the host and he performed the most interesting rendition of Elton John's classic Rocket Man(on Family Guy, Stewie does that same performance exactly the way Shatner did). The Saturn Awards was a celebration of the three genres and the craftspersons behind every project. I guess the Soul Train, BET and the Essence Award shows should allow white, Latin/Hispanic, Asian and others into the shows, too. This is no surprise to me. And it's not going to change.
The oscars itself is an opinion. They give an award to an actor on their opinion on who performed the best. Stacy dash on the boycott http://www.thewrap.com/stacey-dash-fox-news-oscars-diversity-backlash-ludicrous-black-history-month/ So .... The view reacts to stacy dashs opinion if the boycott https://www.yahoo.com/tv/view-blasts-stacey-dash-over-bet-height-hypocrisy-172938866.html
Exactly! And that is the truth about most of these entertainment industry award ceremonies. They are given to them based on opinion and not fact. It's not like in sports where performance and stats play a huge part. No, it's a selected amount of members who vote on what and who they think is the best and the most votes win. Not to put award winners down but the truth is winning awards by voter opinions isn't saying much even if it was a good movie/tv show or performance. With that said the whole boycott thing and call to diversity they are doing is a tad bit more of them seeking entitlement and acceptance by white people. Because what about other races that get shut out at these mainstream award shows like the Oscars. You can't call for diversity if you are only talking about black people being shut out, because that's not diverse. That is more less saying we want the oscars to be black and white. Black and White doesn't amount to diversity. As far as Stacy Dash is concerned she is really idiotic. First of all people of multiple races have been nominated and won Image awards and BET awards. Secondly she sounds like one of those people that obviously doesn't know how racism works, especially in this country. You can't just stop talking about racism and hope that is goes away, doesn't work like that.
Another conservative on the issue Black Talk Show Host Calls Out Spike Lee, Jada Sm…: http://youtu.be/L01e8aNNe3I
As members of the audience or presenter and performers? I don't see Asian people on those shows. Maybe Ken Jeong might make an appearance, but he's a funny guy and he's pretty much welcomed anywhere.
The Academy looks at factors like popularity of the film(profits), then the actors and actresses. The technical aspects are examined like sound lighting, set design, music score and etc. Sometimes they may favor an actor or actress one year and snub them the next year. Steven Spielberg had gotten snubbed for The Color Purple. Nominated but hadn't won a single award. Yes, it happens.
No, they don't because if that was the case then both Straight Out of Compton and Creed should have been on the nomination list rather than movies like Room and Brooklyn which hardly anyone outside of Indie/Art House movie watchers saw. Also, the Academy allows for 10 Best Picture Nominations but only did eight this year? Hmmmm.....
In the past Black media outrage over Oscar snubs was because Black actors weren't even nominated for outstanding performances. Please tell me what Black actor had an Oscar worthy performance in 2015?? I'm asking because I didn't see a ton of movies and have no idea. You need good ROLES to be considered Oscar worthy. Let's be real, this is all about Jada bitching because he man didn't get nominated for that concussion movie. Next.
No,it's not about just black actors not getting recognition it's about black people/black lead movies not getting any recognition in any categories PERIOD. Example : Straight Out of Compton gets no nods for either best picture or director but gets nods for writing. Predominately black cast, with a black director but the writers, who are white get nominated??? Same example with Creed. Main character is Michael B. Jordan but it's Sylvester Stallone who gets the Best Supporting Nomination. It might just be me but shouldn't an actor have had equal or greater leads to play against to be nominated for a Best Supporting Role? :smt102
