Really interesting town hall meeting on guns on CNN last night, imo the President did an amazing job laying out "common sense" reforms, yet there are still people, like the lady below (who endured a terrible rape) who believe he wants to restrict gun access to law abiding citizens, unbelievable.

If you have a spare hour, watch the whole show, great stuff.

    I am pro 2nd Amendment.

However, I'm also pro-reasonable checks and balances when it comes to gun sales.

What I don't understand is why there needs to be MORE gun control laws on the books when they aren't enforcing the ones that are already on the books.

The NRA rabid crowd is being completely ridiculous about his executive order, but I still question why it was needed in the first place and why the lawmakers aren't doing something about the root of the issue, which is better mental health everything and fighting street gangs.

Well said about enforcing the laws that are already on the books. The main part of this executive order is to address the 'gunshow', or more accurately stated 'private sale' loophole that some people are using to repeatedly sell guns and not require background checks, and not have to register and get licensed as a gun dealer. It also lays the groundwork to create better programs for the mentally ill.

I found it interesting to hear the President say that 30-40% of the guns used in violent crimes in Chicago, where there are restrictive gun laws, can be traced back to Indiana where there are looser gun laws

I've talked to some vets before about our access to guns and should it be restricted, and a guy told me when you live somewhere that anyone can have open carry and you also can walk around with semi and full automatic weapons, that's called a WAR ZONE.

People really need to step back a minute a consider what kind of America some gun rights advocates are seeking to bring about.

Did Obama talk about the exhaustive process involved in amending the Constitution and why it's virtually impossible the 2nd Amendment will ever be changed???

Obama just wants to go back to the gun laws we had in the 1990s and ban semi automatics for sale.

My only compromise if you want to own weapons of war, is keep them restricted to gun clubs where they are stored in a vault on the premises.

This type of thinking could end up costing the dems the oval office. If Hilary or Bernie start talking about banning Ar15's (which aren't assault weapons the fully auto M16 are) They will make it very difficult for their own campaigns in southern states.

Last time I checked both parties needed the gunshine state.

This two party system is overly simplistic, the cookie cutter mentality needs to end.

Obama is likely going to leave office without being able to enact the policies that he really wants on guns; therefore leaving it open for the next democratic candidate to drop the ball during the election.

The 2nd Amendment is about the right to keep and bear arms. It's a basic right every American understands. An AR-15, M-4, XM-177, AK-47/74 and other high-capacity rifles and carbines used in the battlefield, should not be sold by way of gun show loopholes to anyone who has the money without a background check. If you buy an automatic weapon, you still have to go through some red tape to purchase it. And if the sale of said gun is made, the dealer has to report the sale to the BATF(Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). Even if someone purchases a large amount of ammunition, the federal government will very likely be watching. Personally, I think I don't need ordinance to protect myself. A good rifle, shotgun or handgun can do that. Even a knife(I carry one every day on my job)can protect me. I think that after all the tragic events leading to the loss of innocent men, women and children, I believe strongly that something must be done. The NRA isn't contributing much to this discussion other than their stance and fear that the government will ban all Americans from owning a firearm. Politicians in favor of the 2nd Amendment would back off because it's a difficult time for them. Sure Americans have the right to keep and bear arms. But Americans have the right to be safe and secure. Common sense regulations regarding the sale and use of a firearm must be observed.

Yep, and I'm okay with that, but the wording of the law for private sales seems easily sidestepped.

Yep, that's true, but honestly more gun laws and even enforcing the ones we already have are going to do nothing to stop the flow of illegal guns.

Agreed. While I respect the rights of the 2nd amendment... I have no desire to be around people who insist on parading around with powerful assault weapons and such because they can. Then you have sick people like the guy who insisted on "protecting" the armed forces recruiting station and accidentally fired his weapon.

The issue of open carry is ambiguous. There are people who are in favor of open carry and there are those, like myself, who are not because I am not military or law enforcement. The State of Texas is allowing open carry.
