General Robert E. Lee is the most studied man in the Civil War. He was dignified and experienced. Even after his defeat at gettysburgh, he remained as dignified as he could when he went to meet with Ulysses S. Grant. His family did own slaves and he would often listen to them sing when the work on the family homestead was done while he sat on the porch. He was a man who moved on. Abraham Lincoln wanted to hire him into his administration. But Lee declined.

He was done fighting. He wanted to go back home. Lee's mistake at Gettysburg was the he let one of his generals use big charges into the field. Lee could've won in Gettysburg and the Confederacy had an advantage. But when the Confederates "showed their hand", the Union seized it from them and won. Lee admitted that he had made an error that day. He declined Lincoln's offer because he didn't want to be around folks who would consider him a loser.

Well, the Civil War was the first war ever fought by West Point. Lee was a West Pointer as was Grant. Artillery commanders, cavalry officers, military tacticians who took part(or sides)in the war were also from West Point.
The Stars and Bars of the Confederate flag symbolized the region. And that was what the Confederate army wanted to take with them after the war. It was a symbol of defiance, the region and pride.
