Oldest US Christopher Columbus monument vandalized

The Christopher Columbus monument in Baltimore was vandalized overnight on Monday by protesters rallying against “hate-filled monuments,” the Baltimore Brewreported.

ProtestersActivists smashed a hole in the monument, rendering its inscription, “Sacred to the Memory of Chris. Columbus Oct. XII MDCC VIIIC,” unreadable, the Brew reported. The destroyed monument was accompanied by signs reading “Racism: Tear it Down” and “The future is racial and economic justice.”

Located across from Baltimore’s Herring Run Park at the corner of Harford Road and Walther Avenue, the 44-foot tall obelisk is one of three Columbus monuments in Baltimore, with two others located in Druid Hill Park and the city’s Little Italy neighborhood.

The now-destroyed monument is the oldest Columbus monument in the city — and North America. It was first erected in 1792 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in North America, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The monument’s destruction was captured on a video uploaded to the YouTube channel “Popular Resistance” on Monday, in which the protesters are seen smashing the monument with a sledgehammer as a voiceover narration explains the rationality behind the act of protest.

“Christopher Columbus symbolizes the initial invasion of European capitalism into the Western Hemisphere,” the video’s narrator says. “Columbus initiated a centuries-old wave of terrorism, murder, genocide, rape, slavery, ecological degradation and capitalist exploitation of labor in the Americas. That Columbian wave of destruction continues on the backs of Indigenous, African-American and brown people.

“Racist monuments to slave owners and murderers have always bothered me. Baltimore’s poverty is concentrated in African-American households, and these statues are just an extra slap in the face. ... What kind of a culture goes to such lengths to build such hate-filled monuments? What kind of a culture clings to those monuments in 2017? Part of our evolution as humans requires tearing down monuments to destructive forces and tearing down systems that maintain them.”

The Baltimore Police Department has not yet responded to a request for comment.

The monument’s destruction comes amid a wave of movements to tear down Confederate monuments in the wake of the “Unite the Right” rally and deadly car attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. The city of Baltimore made the decision to remove their own Confederate monuments overnight a few days after the Charlottesville events, along with a statue of slavery defender and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney.

Maybe I'm looking from a different perspective because I'm not personally religious although I've studied religion quite a bit -- but the Quran *does* say some pretty scary stuff. I can give some quotes if people want them. There are definitely calls to violence in that book. With that said, the Bible *also* says some pretty scary stuff, so when Christians criticize Muslims for the violent language described in the Quran, I can't help but think about glass houses and throwing stones.

In the case of Christianity, the violence found in the Bible (and especially in the Old Testament) was overcome when people began to treat the book as more of a general guideline to live life by, and not the literal word of God where every single sentence must be followed exactly. Instead of calling Muslims evil, I think we should be encouraging them to do the same: take the good bits of the Quran and use those as a personal guide, and ignore the bad bits. That's worked for Christianity.

Its not the Religion as much, its their Sharia Law.
No more abortions or gays or same-sex- their shatia law does not allow it.

Look no further than democrstic London who have 100 Sharia Courts alone and the city holds almost 500 Mosques. Just the City.

    Furthermore...
Four in ten British Muslims want some aspect of Sharia Law enforced in (Democratic) UK.

Researchers also found "deeply worrying" levels of belief among British Muslims in conspiracy theories such as blaming the US government or “Jews" for the 9/11 terror attacks on America.

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/738852/British-Muslims-Sharia-Law-enforced-UK-Islam-poll

    Even further..

Of those questioned, 88% said Britain was a good place for Muslims to live in, and 78% said they would like to integrate into British life on most things apart from Islamic schooling and some laws.

However, when asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed that homosexuality should be legal in Britain, 18% said they agreed and 52% said they disagreed, compared with 5% among the public at large who disagreed. Almost half (47%) said they did not agree that it was acceptable for a gay person to become a teacher, compared with 14% of the general population.

In a series of questions on the terror threat in Britain, 4% said they sympathised with people who took part in suicide bombings (1% said they completely sympathised and 3% said they sympathised to some extent), and 4% said they sympathised with people who committed terrorist actions as a form of political protest generally.

Nearly a quarter (23%) supported the introduction of sharia law in some areas of Britain, and 39% agreed that “wives should always obey their husbands”, compared with 5% of the country as a whole. Two-thirds (66%) said they completely condemned people who took part in stoning adulterers, and a further 13% condemned them to some extent. Nearly a third (31%) thought it was acceptable for a British Muslim man to have more than one wife, compared with 8% of the wider population.

( the fact that stoning adulturers was even a question )

A 25-year-old man who allegedly planned to blow up a Confederate statue in Houston, Texas has been arrested, authorities said on Monday..

Houston authorities said they arrested Andrew Schneck, who at the time was toting highly volatile chemical compounds used in bomb-making on Saturday, near the statue of a Confederate soldier.

A judge ordered him held in custody pending a court hearing, which has been set for on Thursday.

    • Police say the vandalism occurred at the cemetery where around 2,000 soldiers are buried

Also, In Kansas City, park officials revealed that an 83-year-old Confederate memorial is set to be moved after it was vandalized.

That came after someone painted what appeared to be a Red Hammer and Sickle on the 'Loyal Women of the Old South' memorial late Friday or early Saturday.

The time to stop was a long time ago. Heck, even 8 years ago. Way overdue.
Museums fine, books fine. I think though the cemetery one..there's 2000 dead soldiers there. Let that one rest.

Christianity/Catholicism had to go through a bloody Reformation in the 1500s led by Martin Luther and it took over ONE HUNDRED YEARS before the 'protest'ant revolution took hold within the Christian faith.

People expecting an immediate end to the radical element within the Islamic faith need to take a long view and understand we've seen this movie before.

You wanna end radical islam sooner than later?? Support ALL literacy programs throughout the Middle East and Arab world.
Many of these terrorists are illiterate in that they can't read the Quran in its original text.

When imams can't make up shit because their followers can check the holy book and discover the truth for themselves, that's the day when you destroy the foundation of groups like ISIL and Al Qaeda.

    Knowledge is Power.

It is incredibly frustrating and sad to see people who may be intelligent in other ways fall for such mis-information and conspiracy theories, trusting facebook posts rather than actual news organizations... wow, just wow...

"CNN is not an actual news organization". It's been busted many times as an extended arm of the DNC.

As conspiracy theories go, it doesn't even make sense. I guess those White supremacists and neo-nazis chanting 'Jews will not replace us' and 'blood and soil' were actors too??

These are the same people who believe it's a common tactic on the left to pay phony protestors to march at almost any event.

I'd be more inclined to believe the right was behind such a tactic because historically, since the 1960s, conservatives don't really march about issues.
