    If the data is unreadable/unmountable/unrecoverable..the drive is already ruined. Which is why this is a very last resort for mechanical failure.

    But running the cables through the cold is an interesting choice. However, I would recommend only doing that once or marking the end to the dead drive.
    Don't want to ruin the cable and other kg drives.

    One thing you can try is installing a secondary drive and cloning the primary drive. You should then be able to install the secondary as primary and boot from it without having to reinstall the operating system or move files.

    I've done this using a free program called Clonezilla - http://clonezilla.org/ It works with Linux or Windows.

    To use it you would burn the Clonezilla ISO to a CD and boot from the CD.

    If you use the same size drive (recommended) then you only have to follow the steps from 1:17 to 1:40 (and select beginners mode).
