I am constantly drawn to the past..much of it fascinates me, especially pictures/photos that capture the era.

For contextual purposes, I figure anything circa 1970's and prior is "historical".

    Anything goes...:smt001

Please note* Some history may offend, anger or hurt because history has been brutal and ugly as well as fun and outrageous. We can't erase it nor should we.

Kiribati warriors were known for their ferocity.
They also had the most fully developed armour in the Pacific.
In Kiribati, wars were often fought over an insult, or over territory.

    What an honor

So I'm guessing the USA had a (morbid?) fascination with the A-Bomb and Nukes...

The Kanem-Bornu Empire was an empire that existed in what is now modern Chad and Nigeria.

The photo is of Bornu body guards for the Shehu (or ruler) of the Dikwa Bornu Emirate in Nigeria....photo from around 1917 to 1920s.
This role was extremely important socially.

    Riders all wear quilted armour...

Riders all have kwalkwali (helmuts).. likely brass headpieces, and decorative ostrich feathers.

They carried wide bladed takoubas and swords

These men are bodyguards to the Shehu, the cream of the crop in terms of the cavalry (and) carry weapons with heritage and quality.
