This maybe a sports story but it is big news non the less. Charlie Strong is set to become the Head Coach of the one of the most if not the most visible programs in all of college football. It was long thought that despite the being the DC of two national championship teams and always having one of the top ranked defenses in the nation, he would not be able to get a job in the upper echelon southern programs due to his family and many boosters being uncomfortable with his marriage. Meet the new first family of Texas football.
Married to a white woman kept the sec from hiring him, should have gotten the Florida job tenon job ole miss should have hired him, I think he will win big there
Good luck to this brother. I used to live in Austin. People are fanatical about the football team. It's not as bad as it is in Alabama, but it's still pretty bad. He needs to have success early and consistently, or he's going to have to deal with a lot of fucking grief.
you are right but in a way he came out better. austin is the biggest football program with the biggest budget and it's own tv network. they are also a top dog in their conference and if they win they are joint favorites to be in big games along with the winner of the sec each year. i'd rather be in austin, while still has problems with racism but is more progressive than mississippi. not to mention while ole miss has dixxie money it pales in comparison to texas. not to mention being able to recruit the deep talent pool of texas hs football.
Actually, Joker Phillips (Kentucky's former head coach) is married to a White woman: In any event, I bet Florida wishes they'd have hired him now. Plus Texas means that he's got a better chance to go undefeated than if he'd coached for an SEC school. It's a pretty good move all around.
Aside from Oklahoma and possibly Baylor, I don't see a lot of threats to Texas in the Big 12 next season. And as we saw with Mack Brown, Texas will give him all the money, support, and resources that he needs to compete with the other Texas schools. I'm not a Texas fan but I hope he does well.
so true. but in a way its blessing and a curse. with this comes high expectations. but if he succeeds it will give more black coaches a chance.
Red McCombs bashes Texas hire http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/red-mccombs-bashes-texas-hire/story?id=21449215 "But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up." McCombs, the former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Vikings and co-founder of Clear Channel Communications, said on "The Blitz with Dat Nguyen and Jason Minnix" that he was stunned to learn Strong was the choice to replace Mack Brown. He publicly lobbied last week for Texas to hire former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden. "I think it is a kick in the face," McCombs said. "Beyond the fact of what actually happened. We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game. When we decided to go get Mack -- from the time we decided to go get Mack to about 30 hours later to have a press conference here and it was done -- we had a lot of input before we went after him. Longtime booster Red McCombs is not a fan of Texas' decision to hire coach Charlie Strong away from Louisville, calling it a "kick in the face" during a radio interview Monday. "I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," McCombs said of the selection process during an interview with ESPN 1250 San Antonio. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator. "So I don't know what the big rush was. I was kind of pleased that [Texas athletic director Steve] Patterson already said that he'd like to get it done in the middle of January. That seemed logical to me. I'm a team player, but I think they went about it wrong and made the selection wrong." Texas named its McCombs School of Business after the benefactor, and he has a statue inside Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. McCombs has donated more than $100 million to UT and is a close friend to Brown. McCombs said he was certain Patterson couldn't go wrong on the hire during an interview with the San Antonio Express-News last week. "I don't see how they can miss," McCombs told the paper. "They can get anyone they want. They can close their eyes and go 'Eeny-meeny-miny-moe' and end up with someone good."
LOL @ this crusty old motherfucker. Like I wrote before. Brother Strong better hit the ground running. Because this is what he's going to be dealing with.
SEC vs. Texas Charlie is better off LIVING in Austin than Gainesville or most SEC towns. That black guy who coached at Kentucky, not really a big deal because REALLY who cares about FOOTBALL at UK? The gem is hoops at Rupp Arena. SEC is great but Florida, Georgia, Ms. State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tenn. aint' all that. A&M and Missouri PROVED they are overrated. Austin is no more fanatical than any city whose college has won a national title Ann Arbor, Columbus State College USC fan base, Florida, Georgia FSU LSU OKC All the same
Well ain't that some shit. I bet this old asshole thinks blacks are also better off being running backs and not QB's.
